I have never liked CBJ's offensive system....never....
However, to maximize efficiency and effectiveness--it does require a QB who is a legitimate threat to run the ball for more than 2 yards....
Justin Worley proved that fact in a negative way....
Josh Dobbs proved that fact in a positive way...
Dormady is proving that fact in a negative way...I like the kid...strong arm, stays under control, appears to be a good leader.
However--this offense will never be effective with a QB who is a pocket-passer and just athletic enough to execute roll out plays....and that is all we have with QD...an average passer who cannot run the ball....
I think J Guarantano knows it...and cannot hide his frustration...He's just a better athlete...and a better fit for this offense--in the mould of Josh Dobbs...
CBJ should make the change...to JG now....I hate it for QD...but it would be the best thing for the TEAM...
However--IMO--CBJ has dug in his heels and will not make this necessary change...
I agree with 90 percent of your analysisbut disagree with your solution. Based on what I've seen, QD gets the job done...but, you're right: in Butch's "zone read" system, you need a legit threat of the QB running to make it work.
Who among us can forget Butch's immortal words of his zone-read offense when he first arrived?
"The system is infallible as long as the players buy into it."
The silly "infallible" claim aside, the system surely worked with Dobbs. Don't think it'll work for QD as it's engineered now.
My point: Butch should tweak/adjust his system around his QB's strengths rather than trying to continually fit a round peg into a square hole, i.e. QD in Butch's pure zone-read. Build the system around your QB's (and other players') strengths rather than trying to force fit the player into a system that limits or restricts his strengths.
How about a twist on the I formation? How about Chandler playing FB for Kelly on a couple of play? How about a twist on the ol' wishbone/flexbone? How about JK, CFA and Chandler lining up in a couple of special sets? Be a little more creative, please.
Worley was a pocket passer. Dobbs was dual-threat.
QD does not look to be a dual-threat QB yet...to my eyes, he looks like primarily a pocket passer or a roll-out passer.
