I didn't want to say anything the other day because I didn't want to act like I think Fulmer has any other motive than generosity by donating the 1 mil; however, I do question the timing of the donation. Right before football season?????? Why not at the end of last season? It will factor into any decision the powers make whether they say it does or not. I just wonder what Phil was thinking making it just a few days before the start of season. Knowing he might have a mediocre season at best?? Offseason would have been more appropriate. And I don't know if it was even appropriate to do while you are an employee of the university. There is a conflict of interest issue, isn't there? I personally don't think Hamilton will ever fire Fulmer and it would take regents/trustees to force Hamilton to do it.

Any thoughts???

I thought the negavol nation coming out of the woodwork to run the team and coaching staff down was bad. Then this is posted.

Perhaps they should just set it aside. So when he gets fired they give it to him as severence pay.

It definitely takes second guessing to a whole new level.

I'm not real happy with the guy right now, but the idea that he wrote a 7 figure check with an ulterior motive is just goofy.

Here's a thought . . . That was ridiculous. :clapping:

Nobody with a 7 figure buyout clause cuts a check for $1 million in order to keep their job.
Actually, if anything, giving the donation hurts Fulmer because it gives the administration an extra $1mil in the coffers should they be thinking about a buyout.

Fulmer has been at UT too long (player, assistant coach, HC) to be fired. He will "retire" or move to an assistant AD position. But I hope he does that after this season.

I told my Dad the exact same thing last night. :w00t:

I have to agree 100%. Say what you will about Fumer's faults, and I certainly have, there's no debating he's a charitable guy who genuinely cares about UT. My guess is, they announced the donation at the start of the season hoping the team would get off to a hot start and spur some people to make contributions of their own.

Yeah, there is no doubt in my mind that Fulmer loves this school. I would love to see him retire coaching and move to Asst AD just for the sake of keeping the man somewhere he loves. But that's just me.

The coaches have already run the team into the ground so the first part of your post is an impossibility. That said, I'd agree that it does not do anyone any good to question the motives of Fulmer's charitable giving.

Fulmer's donation was was made to kick off the next session of fund drive work...

Last year's drive ended in August, and fund drive workers who raise money from that point on get credit towards their VASF points for next season. That's the ONLY factor involved in the timing, and to suggest the conspiracy to start this thread is nuts.

I didn't say he did it to keep his job. I wondered and wanted thoughts about doing it before the season. It is reasonable to question if it was appropriate or not. It is very unusual to do something like this. I am not questioning his generosity or committment to UT, but a true professional would wonder the kind of perception such a move might create especially under the circumstances.

Nobody suggested conspiracy. Do some research and see how many coaches have donated 1 million to their alma mater right before a season has started or ever for that matter. It is unusual.

No time would have been appropriate. If he would have done it soon after the PSU loss, I guess folks would have been claiming he was using it a s a distraction against the bowl loss. If he would have done it during the spring practices, someone would have probably claimed it was because he didn't like what he saw coming back.

The timing was what it was. Can't read much more into it than that.

He should have done it on Christmas morning. That would have removed all doubt.
If he would have made the donation in the spring, you probably would have him saying that he was trying to out do Coach Pearl's donation/scholarship honoring Dane Bradshaw.

I'm the biggest Fulmer critic out there, but I can question the timing of this gift. I just question his ability to know when we are in 4 down territory.

I read an article a few days ago that said the donation had been in the works for several years and that the Fulmers wanted to give the gift anonymously; but the 'powers that be' insisted that the Fulmer name tag be put on it.

It wouldn't be the first time UT has gotten rid of a coach who has devoted his entire life to the program. IMO it would be poetic justice.

You are correct.
