When he ended up considering coordinators appears to have been to use the cash that didn't go to the HC to hire the rest of the staff.

That may end up being a very shrewd approach.

It will be if we end up getting homerun coordinators. If not, not so much.

What are we hearing about Hugh Freeze?

I'm just glad Fulmer slammed the door in Haslam face. This could have been tragically worse than it ended up being. Jimmy Haslam almost single handedly killed tennessee football but Fulmer said hell no! Love it!

I am not comparing Schiano to Freeze but how could you bring Freeze on board with his baggage after the public outcry for potentially hiring Schiano?

Because folks forgive having sex with grown women easier than possibly knowing about your boss having sex with little boys.

Exactly. Incredible that Freeze would even be considered (if he has - never trust rumor) in light of the Schiano debacle.

Please, Fulmer’s thoughts are never far removed from...

Like I said, wasn't comparing but it is a fair question. I am not for or against a potential Freeze hire but his name has been tainted.

Agree...my biggest concern is can he get some great position coaches and S&C coaches...

a positive for getting CJP is that he will know the position coaches that are keepers such as CRG since he will have seen all of them...

for me the jury is still out on S&C coach since we only had him for 1 year...

don't really know what to think about Thig for coaching up the LB's...I haven't been overly impressed there...

If he can get some really good line & WR coaches, that is the point of greatest weakness. If he gets the position coaches, then the coordinators are a lesser concern for me...

he has worked with Pittman and Chaney who IMO are top notch...maybe with enough $$$ he can get them back

That is exactly what didnt happen. Pruitt is sexton client, its business as usual on rocky top. You can quote me on that later.

So the University of Tennessee, with it's storied football history and number of wealthy boosters, had to go cheap on the HC job in order to afford quality assistant coaches?

If so, that's a shame.

Based on nothing but observations of results... Gullickson should be kept. Thigpen should have been gone before now. He has not been effective.

IMHO, Beard and Warren deserve a long look. Both are new. Both were dealing with inherited problems along with the splatter of Jones' failures.

You can't keep them of course... but I have pity for UT's O coaches. Jones' stupid system and stubbornness screwed them over.

Friend is a solid hire. He'll be OC (edit: sorry, I meant OL coach). Some will poo-poo Freeze but some program is going to get a whale of a deal with him as their OC... would be great if it were UT.

Not the point. The strategy was to hire a coordinator after not finding a current HC that they wanted and who wanted the job. I know some of you think that means UT has some how fallen into the abyss... but it pretty much happens in every coaching search for every program. Currie just made a reality show out of it. They hired a former DC who has been successful at multiple stops. They hired him at market value. That leaves much more in reserve to surround him with a staff that just might make him look like a great hire.

We know the other way didn't work for UT. They hired Jones then went cheap on the staff. Jones was never as good as the money he made but it also didn't help that the staff money could only attract mid-major quality coaches.

could be.

i do feel like for the first time in a long time, we have a real football coach, that's going to have an SEC caliber staff.

i have no idea how good Pruitt is going to be, or not for that matter.

but he's not a lawyer. he's not band member. and he's not a walking talking unemployed punchline.

he's an elite level defensive coach and recruiter, that's born and bred in the SEC.

i feel totally different about this guy than i have about any of the previous 3 coaches we've had this last decade.

And all you seem to be doing is spewing unnecessary negativity because you're apparently to narrow in your thinking to consider that there might be more ways to build a winning staff than throwing $10 million per year at Gruden... or too much at "damaged goods" like Kelly, Kiffin, or Leach.

no, they didn't have to. but under the circumstance, it sure could be the prudent thing to do.

Well said. Me too. He may not be HC material... but there's no doubt he's a football coach. Saw one report that credited him with a significant culture change at one of his stops. They were soft... he wouldn't allow it.

But that is my point. The great tradition, wonderful stadium and facilities, rabid fan base, and rich history, and we still repeatedly go cheap.

So is Fulmer... Half of college athletics is. Its almost harder to find someone who isn't represented by him or his agency. Calm down.
