preseason rankings are a joke. i guess ur one who puts more stock in fulmers teams bein ranked in the preseason instead of where we are at the end of the year. what did it feel like to you to have fulmer who had been in the SEC longer than anyone losing every year to a Saban and Meyer?

nobody here loves Kiffin. His problem was inheriting Fulmer's golden boy, who couldn't think his way out of a grocery sack.

Touting it as greatness that we started a guy like Ainge, due to lack of options, is absurd. Expecting a brand new coach to bring in a freshman QB who could start, after having been here for a couple months is almost retarded.

I'm not about to call for the angry mob in February because Dooley's premise is to cut down on attrition and get good guys in.

However, I suspect we aren't going to have a Top 15 class come Feb.

We may know whether we are on the Alabama trajectory or the Florida trajectory real soon. Moreover, we better wait and see what Urb can do without Tebow. He may be the next Richt-Fulmer. If the first two games are any indication.......

they also fired knuckleheads and brought in folks to remedy the problem. Doesn't appear that Pelini is having any issues with that.

True Meyer is on a "wait-n-see" ,but Alabama got a winner and guess who stemmed from Saban and recognizable coach from UGA. DERECK BYGOD DOOLEY.

Fulmer had two bad seasons; that's fewer than Paterno, who the kiddies wanted fired earlier this decade, but bounced back to solid play.

I'm not willing to define a coach by conference titles, but I definitely am unwilling to fire him unless something better is more likely and something worse far less likely. Anyone who paid any attention to college football and Tennessee's recruiting deficiencies/scheduling difficulties within it would have told you we'd end up scouring for risky hires merely to try to keep up with what Fulmer averaged over the worst five years of his tenure.

You're still not getting it. Fulmer had those bad years as an ESTABLISHED coach. You're comparing him to a coach in his first year with a team that has 0 and I mean 0 depth. Your argument might be plausible in say 3 years maybe 4.

This assumes that failing to live up to the ability on the team is considered something other than poor.

The solid play bounceback piece is fantasy. He had an SEC trip handed to him by more miracles than any coach should be allowed and he still managed to get fired for sorriness shortly thereafter.

Yes, but for their in-state talent, it was a long, miserable road from Stallings to Saban.

A long, miserable road.

But Saban is a WORTHY replacement for every coach in the game today. And probably every coach ever.

Not by your definition; he still hasn't won a Big 12 title, and only has to beat schools from Kansas, Colorado and lowly Iowa State to get to the title game. He hasn't really competed recruiting-wise with the top programs at all, and he's 0-5 against top-10 foes.

I wish the last miserable years with Fulmer was the long road with a new coach building us back to dominance. Of course hindsight is 20/20.

my definition for success for Pelini's turnaround situation was a conference title, in a conference with OU and TX? Don't be stupid. That wasn't my definition for Fulmer. It was be competitive with the teams vying for the title and play to your capability as a team.

Kennyb, that's the problem.

I hope like heck Dooley is the right guy. Hell, WE ALL DO. But, things can get a lot worse than those "miserable" Fulmer years. Will they? We'll find out in the next two years.

Tennessee Dominance is mostly a function of the Fulmer years, btw. Since integration, we've won nothing without Fulmer.

But here's how this game works -- hire a new guy, dramatically lower your standards for the new guy in ways you would never tolerate for the fired guy, then by the time the new guy is worse than the fired guy, you fire him (or he bolts before that can happen), so you hire another new guy, give him the same leeway/low-tolerance you gave the last new guy, he does the same, and repeat, and repeat and repeat. So far, no program without a big talent base, has been able to compete for top-5 status (what an SEC title requires in the modern age) no matter who they hired. What they did do is find ways to demean their brand, undermine their traditions, devalue loyalty and their integrity, and suffer worse/more embarrassing seasons. Think about it -- Nebraska fans are thrilled just to get to their conference title game and lose in a close game. We just did that in 2007 and our fans mocked it. It will be a long, dry winter before we get the privilege to mock that again.

Well, we did just that every single season he was in Knoxville save two, and even in 2005, we pulled an upset over a top-10 team on the road.

The fired guy ran the program into the ground. I'm glad VegasVol liked having 30 pt loses year in and year out to Saban and Meyer.
