I was just wondering how various posters will remember Phil Fulmer. Not to be too nerdy, but if you would not mind putting how long you have followed the vols, it would be interesting to see the difference between some old timers and the young guys.

Try to put the loss to Wyoming out of your mind while you write this.

I am 37, an alumni, and have followed the Vols for as long as I can remember. I am forever grateful to Phil for the national championship. But, I remember him mostly for the frustration of watching us lose when we shouldn't and being constantly frustrated with our play. I have always felt we should have been better than what we showed on the field. This season has been the worst and definitely has tarnished Phil's reputation. Thanks for the memories but it is past time to move on.

To be honest it will be hard to to remember him as a coach who reached the top of the mountain without the help of other people. He took a very talented Majors team, and continued to improve on it to the point where we were able to out talent a predominately weak SEC, culminating in a national title. At this point I will remember him as someone who could never reach that hump again, and despite coming close, continued to nose dive until it reached this season. I have very little perspective outside of the late 80's up until today because I was born in 1982. So I have only been through two football coaches, but watching the complete reversal of one of them has illustrated that your time in college football at the pinnacle is most likely short.

I am just south of 30 and I am happy he is gone. I hate this talk about he spent 30 years of his life giving to his alma mater. I tend to think that this is overblown. I think there are others that "give" back to things they love the best way they know how. It made him rich beyond imagination, so its not like he sacrificed for his school.

I do think the Cutcliffe meant way more than he will ever admit. There would be no National Championship if Cutcliffe never joined the staff.

He's got accomplishments, but he'll also be remembered for ending the 278 year bowl streak and for heading up the worst season in school history.

I am 39. I have seen & listened to a lot of UT football. I will always remember the '98 season fondly & with a smirk. That team got ALL of the lucky bounces that the previous half dozen or so didn't. During the 90's it seemed that UT had some of the most talented teams in college football. One year, with a lot of luck, they got it done. The rest, they failed to show up in at least one game a year. Since '98, that trend has returned & grown to the point that this year they haven't shown up almost all year. I grew up in a neighborhood surrounded by Vols fans. They were very hard on Bill Battle, then Majors & now CPF. I guess we have set the bar pretty high at UT. I hope this can be a competitive program again, SOON.

I'm 28. In his prime he was the right guy at the right time. I don't think he has ever been considered the best coach in the league. There has always been a Spurrier, Tubberville, or Saban around to take that title from him. Ultimately I think he'll be remembered for the players that he brought here and not the job he did coaching them.

born. he was a good man who has passed his prime. after today mike hamilton understands he made the correct call. this is the worst vol team i have ever seen. first game was in 1965. this team is a team void of any leadership. players or coaches. we should have seen this coming when ucla beat us. ucla is terrible. we are worse. i don't see how cpf will get up in the morning and go to work. he should just set sail now. today was horrible. let everyone get their licks in on us now. we will make a good hire and be back.

Wow that is a long time. I did not realize we played back in 1730. Who was the coach? George Washington's dad?:)

Tubberville? You must be kidding. Same as Coach Fulmer with better talent.

This game is all on Hamilton and his ill timed horsecrap, but....

AFTER the SEC championship we blew last December..by trying to hang on he has lowered his SEC stock to that secondary level..Pat Dye-ish(hung on too long, that is...)

Watched my first game in 1967/8 vs Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl BTW~~~~

I must have missed something. I didn't see Hamilton take any snaps today. I guess it was Hamilton's fault UT lost to a crappy UCLA and Auburn team too.

His legacy is really hurt. Today's game put the nails in the coffin. Please don't let him try to run another program! Retire and enjoy life. Watch football on TV and save the coaching for someone else.

Early in his career he was the guy who could beat all the teams he was suppoed to beat, but could never get our guys to over achieve and win games that we weren't supposed to. Finally in '98 he was able to get a few bounces and win the title, but even that team was right on the edge of having as many as three losses. Following '98 I feel Fulmer and his staff got prideful or lazy or something and it started slipping then. In my opinion the loss in '99 to Arkansas was the precursor to the 01 LSU loss as the beginning of the collpase.

Im 16 years old and I was born a Vol. I only really have a few select memories of the 90s, but going all the way to California twice to support my Vols. Going to Tuscaloosa and Gainseville last year, and South Bend a few years ago puts an awful taste in my mouth. Im not to attached to they guy.

I'm older than all of you 61 and i've seen it all.But i will tell you with the talent we had in the 90's we probably should have had at least one more championship. We played not to lose and it backfired many times. We had no killer instints in our coaches and little excitement on the bench. We seemed to recruit great players that were never heard from once they arrived on campus.Who knows what really happened this year but not having a QB may have killed the season starting with UCLA.
