Fulmer's future coaching prospects (merged)

How can you say they aren't comparable?

He has coached longer than Phil and he also was independent for the first 10+ years he was a head coach. I would have hated to see our teams as a independent. I mean come on man he racked up most of his wins in those years.

The places old coaches go to die...S. Carolina,Miss State,Texas A&M, The State of Arizona...could all have openings in the coming years.....

Ya i guess the game has passed Fulmer up. What do you think Joe Pa?

Just because penn.state has stupidly allowed paterno to become bigger than the program doesn't mean UT should with Fulmer--and I'm glad we didn't. Paterno is the most selfish man in sports. He should have retired more than a decade ago, and let's remember that pa. state has been a weak to medicore team for most of the last 10 to 15 years--they've won nothing. Paterno is a good man, and he was a great coach for a time, but that doesn't mean he or anybody deserves lifetime employment. The situation at pa. state is weird and has been for years.

What exactly has changed about the game of football?

The team that has the best defense and controls the ball on offense still wins the same as it always has. It might be that the work ethic of the players has changed, but given players that are willing to put out the effort asked of them, not much has changed.

He will coach again, there's no doubt in my mind. He may very well not get 3.5 million to do it, however, in the economic times we are in, that kind of money may be a thing of the past or future. I sort of doubt UT ponying up that much money right now. I could be proven wrong, but anyone stupid enough to put up a 3.5 million dollar multi year contract right now is an idiot, first class. I'd bet there are teams, Alabama comes to mind, that are regretting the situation they have themselves in financially. There's no doubt in my mind that after the first of the year, we are going to see bankruptcy's in this country like no other time in history. Where do you plan on getting that kind of money?

It always amazes me at the $10/hour people who think it would be ok to just pony up a 5 year 25 million dollar contract with 3 million in possible bonus money. Kinda like the idiot on CNN yesterday that postulated that the Fed and Banks ought to loan money at 0% interest. How do they propose the banks stay in business like that?

Skipper

I am sorry. Please, let me stand corrected. The game of football has not passed him by. The game of HEAD coaching has passed him by.

I don't know.... Seems like he has all this talent and can't seem to win ballgames..... So what the hell do you think is the problem?

the players suck (most) and he has a bad staff. A head coach does not need to be a great X/O guy. he will coach again and do fine. Maybe not a NC, but will do well.

Honestly and objectively, I think this is the problem with Fulmer.

I think that he is loyal to a fault.
I think that is QB situation has caused many problems.
I think that fans have unreasonable expectations (although I 100% agree that is the nature of the job).
I think that talent/execution has been a bad combination.
I think not giving Trooper Taylor a position to coach, hurt our recruiting with blue chip players (whether Trooper is qualified to be a position coach is not my place to say).
Most importantly, I think that Clawson has been a bad fit. (I didn't say Clawson is a bad coach...just a bad fit)
I think that we overrate where UT stands in general.

Fulmer's recruiting classes are strong. That hasn't passed him by.

Chavis is an excellent DC (I know...you don't have to agree...but in coaching circles, he is very highly regarded).

UT's offense has hurt them. It has hurt the defense.
When Cutcliffe left, it hurt the offense.

ALL Head coaches are made through the work of their OC/DC/Recruiters. This point is not-debatable.

For hiring an OC that was not a great fit, CPF is guilty.

I am not a Fulmer apologist. I am, however, objective about everything (or try to be).

I don't think Fulmer is a bad coach. I think he has forgotten more football that most of us will ever know.

UT won the SEC East last year. They are not good this year. Are expectations fair....probably not. Again, that is the nature of the job.

Pundits thought the game passed JoePa by. They are 9-1 this season. He has a good OC/DC and has improved recruiting.

I don't think that UT is that talented. I think that they are the 5th most talented squad in the SEC. I think that Fulmer has a great class coming in. I wish we would have been patient and see if it turns around.

I'm not living off a National Championship. However, CPF won one. Only a handful of guys ever have. Give credit where credit is due.

However, this is a what have you done for me lately job. I 100% agree with that.

It was time for a change.

The game, however, doesn't "pass someone by" in 10 years.

AMEN!:clapping:
get ready to get lambasted for the"unreasonable expectations" comment! I do agree BTW!

Exactly how has the game passed him by?

I see no logic in that statement.

It can be clearly illustrated by watching the Vandy game and then tuning in to the Michigan Sate at Penn State 3:30 pm ABC and then Pittsburgh at Cincinnati 7:15 pm ESPN2 and finally Texas Tech at Oklahoma 8 pm ABC.

Particularly watch Kelly and Leach. It will be painfully obvious!!!:good!:

How can you say 5-star recruits suck. Recruiting is one of his major strengths. I don't know about you..

*'s mean NOTHING!
EXCPF can get athletes, but can his coaches make them better. No. That is his fault for being to loyal to his staff. I'd rather have a 2-3 star that improves than a 4-5 star that does not! Name the last 5 star recruit UT has had that was great. Berry (ok...fine..next)

...... really. Thanks for the insight to that little tiff of football knowledge. Thanks alot.

do you have some kind of telepathy or something like esp ??????????????????????????????????? or inside contacts at USC Cocks???????
No... I'm not a Vet either but I know a horses ass when I see one...

At first I didn't want him to coach anymore, retire and be remembered for the goodtimes, he has nothing to prove. Then I began to reconsider,....I hope he goes to Clemson and in a couple of years kicks our ass a couple of times, we deserve it for treating him like crap.

Why don't you take your fanboy worship and go with him.
