Fulmer's done as Head Coach at UT, I'm ready to give him a break

Does anyone still believe Fulmer is coming back next season?

That sums it up. We had some REALLY good teams that were built on RECRUITING and decent coaching.

BUT...the time has come (especially in the SEC, but even in other conferences) that you have to have GREAT recruiting combined with GREAT COACHING to get to (and stay) on top...

Tennessee has the recruiting...but not the coaching staff...

It's that simple.

He's wasted so many good players with bad coaching and not knowing when and who to play

There's too much parity in college football now....good recruiting wont carry the burden and get the team far based on pure talent anymore.

Fulmer's record against decent opposition is woeful, his winning percentage is built on cupcakes and easy schedules

He's the most inactive and passionless coach I've ever seen on the sideline. Clapping doesn't win ballgames Phil

He's been propped up and made to look by his assistant coaches through the years. Clawson's lack of experience is showing how vulnerable Phil is when he doesn't have Cutcliffe to make him look good. If Chavis leaves you'd see a team that would win 2 or 3 games a season

I don't understand what you mean? There have been numerous good replacement candidates discussed on this board and Hammy has already stated that the money for they buyout is sitting in the bank.

Who are the good replacements? That are realistic? I haven't seen any names that make me think they'll be a success here

Just because the money is there doesn't mean you have to spend it. Plus it's not just about money, it's about the AD admitting he made a huge mistake by giving Fulmer that huge undeserved contract. It makes him look really bad and could cost him his job. It would be better for him if he stuck with Fulmer and he turned it around.

He may lean on the "he's been a great servant to the program he deserves a chance to turn it around" excuse so he can retain him and save himself

Hammy can always excuse giving a raise to a coach who went to the SECCG. He cannot excuse continuing to put up with this mess or his job becomes in jeopardy.

Anyway, it is a moot point. CPF will be gone; it is just a matter of when the announcement takes place. I feel it will be at the end of the season. I wish it were now.

(5-6 in 2005)
I'll give him a break when, and if, he steps down. He could have quietly retired after 2003 or even 2005 and we would have had the same reverence for him as Notre Dame for Dan Devine or Nebraska for Bob Devaney. But noooooooeee, nooooooeee he has taken the selfish route and now we have had to endure miserable beatings at the hands of our rivals and now the lowlys like South Carolina.

My attitude will be the same as previously for Majors: "Pick up your check, clean out your office, and don't let the door hit you on the way out":banghead2:.
I completely agree Rocky. It has been obvious for several years that the game has passed him by, but he refuses to change and has driven a once proud program straight into the ground! He might as well finish out this miserable year, but the announcement should be made now and the search for a new coach should begin now!

HAMILTON NEEDS TO GO TOO!!:realmad:

I was thinking(you should try it) from Hamilton's perspective, what reasons he could come up with to retain Fulmer

My own opinions about Fulmer can be found all over this board

He obviously should go. He's been overrated the whole time he's been at UT. He's leaned heavily on Chavis and Cutcliffe for his success. His record is built up on tons of cupcakes

Why should Hamilton be fired?

I think Hamilton will bring him back. The lack of an adequate replacement coupled with his huge contract makes firing him a tough decision. He'll point to his impressive record compiled against mostly cupcakes as the reason for keeping him. He won't mention his record against good teams, or the fact that Cutcliffe and Chavis are the reason Fulmer had any success

It's going to be great news for the rest of the SEC, they love Fulmer

. . .I've read all the bashing of CPF since the loss to UCLA and agree that the quality of the Vol program has slipped the last number of years. Consider this. . .maybe Hamilton goes the way Auburn is going and says that hiring the OC was a mistake. . .change the flavor of the assistent coaching staff and see what happens!? All I know is I am baffled as to why we are so inept?? :dunno: We had a very seasoned OL coming back that allowed 4 sacks all of last year and we had 2 very good running backs returning along with Creer, who we knew would be good! This year we can't run that ball to save our :shaking2:, we can't pass with any consistency at all. Maybe our personnel does not fit the style offense installed this year?? Even with two untested QB's our offense should not have been this bad! Not only has the OL been a major disappointment, there has never developed any chemistry in the offense at all. :bad: I can see it happening for a few games, but we have not gotten any better since the first game. Our D has been solid but undoubtedly has lost some of its spirit realizing that the offense just cannot do the job! Frustration is mounting. . .I can only imagine how Fulmer feels when he sees these stupid penalties crushing what little momentum we can muster in any given game.

I am coming down from Maryland to see the Wyoming game and will cheer like h - -l for the Vols. . .my only regret is that my two traveling buddies will not come close to seeing how magical Neyland can be!

And that 98 NC was pretty darn lucky with a number of huge breaks along the way. Then in the NC game the other teams QB doesn't even play.

I've talked to alot of older guys that say the 98 team was the luckiest NC in college football history

Yet it is what every UT fan goes back to. Fulmer has Chavis and Cutcliffe to thank for his reputation

luckiest in CFB history? Give me a break and talk to some smarter people. Also that backup QB for FSU was good enough to beat Florida worse than UT did that year.

Everyone needs to rember that the NC was won by a team that loved the game and had energy to play it the guys Phil has are not giveing him the effort he deserves, not to mention if the only reason to keep was his PAST record then the AD is not doing the fans or the donors the justice WE deserve.

I don't think he is going anywhere, but I hope I'm wrong. I wonder how many of those that say he is gone is more of a mere strong hope that he is gone.

I have only been here for 10 years, and when everyone was calling for Sanders head, i was calling for Chavis to go. this was 2000. Sure defense has been good some years but for the most part all i see is players out of place, confused and lost, only the players athleticism has made it close. Theres another rub of mine. How about we recruit football players instead of athletes that we can make great position players out of.

Have any of the "older guys" ever heard of Colorado getting a 5th down to beat Mizzou, and go on to win the NC??? A lot of NC's have had a break or two go their way through the course of a season.
