Fulmer vs. (insert something here)

Losing to UF wasn't as big a deal then, especially with 10+ wins staring you in the face, now, we get to look forward to November, which is Dooley's strongest month.

A couple of those florida losses immediately knocked us out of national title contention. I'd say that was a big deal. Florida losses cost Manning the Heisman trophy. In 99 we had the MOST TALENT we've had in 50+ years--at least six players who went on to good NFL careers--and we lost to florida. The '98 victory was great but completely lucky--florida basically lost the game with turnovers. Spurrier kicked fulmer's ass pretty regularly. Give Dooley this much: He's trying to get us back to the top at a time when bama, florida and lsu have been Top 5 programs nationally for the last several years. That's damn tough.

When Fulmer was on top...Bama the Dogs and SC were in the cellar....we raided Georgia of their talent .....we are facing a much tougher challenge now....it doesnt compare.....how did fulmer do his last year

With all this talk on VN to fire Dooley lets look at what Fulmer did against Gators.

1994 the Vols lose to the Gators 34-0.

1995 TN had a 30-14 lead at halftime before falling apart and losing 62-37

After 5 straight loses TN won in 1998 in overtime 20-17 on the way to the NC

With the expectation today, how many years would Fulmer been here before the fans call for his firing.

Spurrier had some damn good UF teams that not many people beat period. So you really can't compare a Spurrier UF team with the current Muschamp UF team. Hell the '95 team was undefeated.

Also, Fulmer won a lot of games thus easing the pain of the losses to Florida.

Lastly, I should point out that Florida fired Zook after only 2 years. I'm sure there were a lot of people saying WTF are we doing? But what did they do? they turned around and brought in Meyer and got 2 titles out of it.

Correct me if I am wrong but if memory serves, Florida was about the only team beating us on a regular basis back then. If Fulmer had a record that mirrored Dooley's against everyone else, then hell yes he would/should have been fired. Your reasoning fails.

Truth...he speaks it.

10-5-1

That's better than any HC in FBS history (min 10 games), except for a certain General (11-4-2).

Bama was goin through what TN is going through now.
For several years the SEC was Florida and Tennessee.
The west was bad until Saban went to LSU

After Stallings left & Shuler got the job, Fulmer pretty much ate his lunch every time we played them. Didn't we whip them like 6 straight under Fulmer's watch?

Zook was the HC from 2002, 2003 and 2004, Fulmer lost to the Gators in 2002, won against them in 03,04.

He caught them at a good time as well.....these Bama teams are a little tougher than those ...check that...a lot tougher

Exactly. Facing 5 different coaches in his career at Alabama. Stallings left in 96 then he got the good years against Dubose, Francione, Shula before Saban came in and started his reign.

3 of those 10 wins came when Bama was ranked as was 4 of those loses Fulmer had to Bama when they were ranked during that span. It was not the same Bama as it is now.

Ok, here's a thought. Some of those games were blowouts with UF and some were close. The games that were close, theoretically, we were pretty evenly matched talent wise.

I wonder how many of those close games were lost because of Fulmer's coaching/ philosophy as opposed to Spurrier's or Meyer's. Someone posted earlier that UF just seemed to always be our Waterloo. I just wonder how many of those close ones Fulmer lost rather than UF won.

fulmer would be worse than dooley now

what ? Dooley has only won what 3 sec games total ? Dooley vs Fulmer is not even debatable. Its not Fulmers fault that other schoold hired Dooley type coaches and he beat them.Just like its not other sec teams fault that Tn hired Dooley and he cant beat them.

Which proved to me that Fulmer was a great recruiter and just a good coach. With the talent Tennessee had for 10+ years I still can't believe we only won 2 SEC championships. I like Fulmer, but if we'd had a great coach we'd won more SEC championships. During the 98 season we got several breaks that fell our way, the first came in the Syracuse game and everyone remembers the Arkansas fumble. In the SEC championship game itself we weren't exactly kicking butt either. Fulmer loved Tennessee and gave his all for it, for that I am thankful.

Hey Gramps wonder if they know Fulmer had an all time losing record against the Gators of 5-11. That was 5 wins in 16 games, allow that to digest and don't forget 2 of those wins were against Zook.

Your right. And the bad part is we had alot of talent then. So back then it was coaching.
