Fulmer Update, Possibly

The one area where he would do well is in the donations department but those would dry up after the alumni realize they aren't getting a return on their investment.

does anyone giving money to Vandy football really expect a return?

The only way I see this going down is that CBJ takes a job at a school with the opportunity to recruit better, and in a smaller, less competitive conference. One that will give him the opportunity to hit it big time. Vandy as a school is impossible to recruit for. Too many good athletes that are in it for the big time rather than a solid education.

That being said, CPF is a great fit at Vanderbilt. I actually predicted it back in November. My prediction post back in november.

This fits in perfectly with the conspiracy theory mania that has gripped a segment of the Nashville population since Steve McNair was found murdered.

Bobby is a better coach than fulmer

When are people going to realize that most of Fulmers success was due to Cutcliffe.

Has anyone but Vol fans noticed the decline in the program when Cutcliffe left in '99 only to get a shot in the arm when he briefly returned and then a pretty much collapse when he left again?

Cutcliffe was the one that should have been getting the $3 million.

Fulmer will not coach in the SEC East again. He might get like a Mid-Major conference school, Big East, or ACC school, but he won't coach in the higher division schools. Fulmer inherited a lot here at UT when he came up, and the fact he left it in shambles speaks volumes of where he left here as a coach. Larry Coker won a NC and after doing crappy in the end with Miami, is now coaching the D-1 FCS University of Texas San Antonio Roadrunners that are scheduled to play their first down in 2010.

Sad but true. He thought he could rest on one season.

Hey guys, I was informed earlier this morning on the way to work by a local sports radio station that the rumor mill is in full blow with Fulmer on the mind. The rumor came out of Vanderbilt that they were trying to get negotiations up to sign Fulmer after this year if Bobby Johnson fails, Vanderbilt AD has reportedly said that he is tired of losing and Fulmer would be the ultimate move, very interesting I thought, this would be some crazy.

:eek:lol::eek:lol::eek:lol::eek:lol:

Bobby Johnson is the best they're gonna do. Phil isn't gonna make that program any better.

Nobody at VU seriously wants Phillip for a hfc. Now if he wanted to coach OL, he might get a nibble. Having been around VU for a few decades now, I think I can say that they are happy with who they have.

I think Phillp could get a gig as hfc somewhere like UVA, Maryland, Indiana, Missouri, etc. I still think Miami would be his best option if Shannon slips up.

At Vandy, I don't care who the coach is, you aren't going to win consistently. This year is about the best you can have at Vanderbilt in the SEC. Bob Johnson is one of the best coaches in the SEC. If they fire him, and hire Fulmer, well... It would just give us a few more reasons to make fun of Vandy. GO VOLS!

I didnt read this entire thread so I dont know if it has been mentioned. I dont think Vanderbilt has an athletic director.

Miami would make a run at Orgeron before they even think about Fulmer.

yep! and this scares the s#!t out of me as to how long the coaching staff stays together. Even if the first couple of seasons are average.

Of all the schools that have Ivy League standards, they are the only one that ever has half a chance at a winning season. They are located in one of the most populated places in America...Southern California, and if it weren't so, they'd have Vandy's luck as well.

They are able to take the left overs the other PAC-10 teams leave behind and still field a decent team. Even still...even with a former NFL QB as their HC, they still loiter at the bottom of their conference. I wouldn't call that "Doing well." Vandy is what Vandy is...an Ivy League School pretending to be an SEC caliber athletic entity. It's not, and I think it's time the SEC showed them the door. They suck in far more shared revenue than they generate. They are a leech, a parasite to this conference, and the statistics bear that out.

They are a charter member of the SEC.

1) Vanderbilt went to a bowl. We didn't.

2) I suppose you're going to tell me that Baylor doesn't belong in the Big XII either? Or maybe that Northwestern doesn't belong in the Big Ten? You might think it sounds stupid what I just said, but that's your logic, and yes, it is very stupid.

3) As someone alluded to earlier, we tried to invite Florida State. They declined. Georgia Tech was a charter member of the SEC, but bowed out in 1964, was an independent for around 20 years, entered the ACC in 1981. Clemson is a charter member of the ACC, very doubtful they'd ever join us.

Little history lesson for you here. Vanderbilt can lay claim to 2 national championships(1906, 1911). Vanderbilt was one of the reasons that M.B. Banks, the UT coach from 1921-1925, went to Knoxville Central HS to coach ball there.

Beating Vanderbilt was one of the things that Bob Neyland was given as a goal. At one point, nobody reigned terror on the football fields in the south as much as the Vanderbilt Commodores did. They were the south's finest football team when they helped to found the conference on December of 1932.

I realize today that, well, they just plain suck for the most part. But it could be argued that without Vanderbilt's organizing efforts, the SEC would have never came to be.

You beat me to it, but thank you.

Things are not that bad in Miami.

Any Div 1 program that would hire phillip is basically saying to its fanbase that they are no longer serious about college football.

Definately makes that a true statement if Miami was to make the hire,,not true for Central Florida or South Florida
as an example as CPF would be an upgrade at either school. And he would be an upgrade at any number of schools. Just not at the so called name schools with a tradition of winning over the years.

Indiana is probably the only possibility of the schools you mentioned. Certainly Miami isn't going to go for a 60+ year old coach, even if Shannon doesn't make it. Most schools want a coach with some uummmph, and enthusiasm, and a recent winning track record. That pretty much leaves Fulmer to pick up the leftovers, schools that might seek a coach with some national name recognition. Fulmer is going to find that the road to a job is going to be tough, and he isn't going to be able to pick and choose, like he wants to do.
