Fulmer to be named AD soon

I'm in the minority but I like the hire if it happens. Fulmer ran a very large and detailed football program and was successful for a long time, even though it didn't end well. The AD position would benefit from someone who has done it at the highest level and knows what's needed. Having a guy who loves Tennessee means he will do everything necessary to bring Tennessee to the top.

Crazy hypothetical, and i know he works for the gators now and is getting up there in age, but how would yall feel if spurrier was brought on as OC or QB coach? I know it would NEVER EVER happen but can you imagine the odd couple-esque pairing of straight laced butch and tell it like it is spurrier sharing a podium? It would be comedic gold. And lets be honest the man knows his way around an offense and has developed some dang good QBs. I imagine wed have a two or three qb system the first four games or so though lol

I didn't like this at first, but if Fulmer can give Butch direction without stepping all over and micro-managing the football program, I'm on board. Just don't be like Alvarez, Phil. And don't neglect basketball like Dickey did.

Spurrier would get pissed off at Dormady, Guarantano, and Jones and end up putting Jancek under center.

Hes my most beloved coach ive ever hated though. Just so much fun to listen to even when it came at our expense. And he may get pissed at his plauers but hes always the first one to say that his own play calling or schemes just flat out sucked that day. The man is as transparent as they come, no sugar coating and no blame game if its his fault. Gotta respect that lol

I love all the armchair experts on here who act like they know the future. Truth is none of you know anything about running an athletic department. Therefore what makes any of you think you know what kind of job Phil Fulmer would do as AD? So many of you have had your heads so far up your own asses, touting "Blackburn or bust" for so long, you simply wont accept any other scenario. I don't know if Phil will be a good hire or not but I will say this, it makes feel better to have a Tennessee native in charge of athletics again.

Kiffin hire was equally dumb

Id agree it destroyed us for a few years but nobody can deny that the man, whe he stays out of his own way which is rare, can coach and recruit. Dang good qb developer and offensive genius. Theres very few guys, if you can control him, in the college game that i would rather have calling plays on offense.

Bill Battle and Barry Switzer both did pretty good jobs as AD's after being successful coaches. Elway has been great just making the jump from a former player and analyst. If nothing else hes a great face of the program, great speaker and im aure will have tons of booster and donor support. As long as they surround him with great advisors with lots of experience i think he will be fine. Im just glad we dont have any of his former coaching colleagues left as head coaches though, because the only thing that scares me about him is his ability to make the tough calls and fire somebody he likes. May be too nice of a guy with too much faith in people sometimes.

**Edit** Dont know why i was thinking Switzer was the AD there. It sounded weird after i typed it and did some googling and realized i must have my wires crossed and must be thinking lf someone else.
You're thinking of Barry Alvarez at Wisconsin.

It's funny, through the entire Hart administration all the talk has been "we need a Tennessee guy. We need someone who loves Tennessee and knows the importance of football. We need someone who knows how to get to the promise land."

And then you get mad when they hire Phil freakin' Fulmer?!?

It seems about 50/50 man. But the negative ones are the loudest so they get the most attention. Its a message board, gonna have some deferring opinions whether theyre logical or not thats all they are from either side, opinions. Just take it for a grain of salt and try to ignore and enjoy the silly season for what it is.

He's not Blackburn. Therefore he's not good enough, apparently.

Yeah because hiring an AD is about making you feel better and not about running a successful athletics department and keeping it in the black.

This hire is as "Tennessee" has it gets, in more than one way. We have a guy in Chattanooga that has a proven track record and experience and decide to hire the guy we ran off a decade ago. Fulmer loves UT as much as anyone ever has and always will, but that shouldn't be the only requirement if we are trying to maintain elite status.

Honest question, i know fulmer helped some in getting the ETSU football program back together and yes i know thats small potatoes compared to UT, but what all did he do and what roles did he help take on? Has he helped anywhere else in this capacity? This is in no way a pro, or anti fulmer post im just honestly curious as to what all hes helped do and what skills and experience he may have gained.

Look on the bright side, at least the bammers will hate us again. Fulmer was public enemy #1 down there. That surely is enough to make any of the most skeptical of Fulmer at least smile (just a little?).

I love Fulmer and there's no doubt he loves Tennessee.

He's been a great frontman for UT and our footVol program always remaining positive.

My 2 concerns are these...

1...At his age how soon will we be right back looking for a new AD again?

2...Where in his background does he have any real knowledge or experience running a huge AD, keeping 20 different sports moving upward and the many other things that the UT AD must do and from now on do really well?

Running a football program is one thing, running the entire AD is a totally different animal and I'm not sure he's qualified at all.

VFL...GBO!!!
