Fulmer subpoenaed

Agree Fulmer was good at running a FB program, an ace recruiter and hired good assistant coaches which all contributed to his success as a HC even though he did let things slide a bit his last 3 yrs or so due to some of the circumstances noted by other posters.

I think he would be better remembered if he had not stained his reputation with the AD job. And some still have the Majors backstabbing issue whether that was true or not.

No back stabbing occurred. As much as I loved/liked Coach Majors, he made his own bed.

He was 1 year removed from having 2 true freshman QB’s and Rick Clausen take us to the SEC title game and then blowing out aTm in the Cotton Bowl. You can’t fire him after that.
Yes I do fire him for that. Rick was the leader of this team going into the next year and Fulmer did everything he could not to let Rick start, thus losing the team causing another disappointing season. Daddy Clausen washed his hands of the program after that and stopped pushing kids from California to UT.

Fulmer recruited every player on a national championship team. He recruited more than one Pro Football Hall of Famer. It will have taken Heupel at least 5 years to recruit an offensive lineman out of high school who started a game at UT.

We know who the better recruiter was.
So if you are telling me was a great recruiter in the 2000’s then he must have been a mediocre coach according to his record.

He had a couple bad years when they couldn’t figure out the QB position. Clawson was not the right hire in 08, and Fulmer bungled the QBs in 05. It doesn’t mean he was a bad coach.

If Fulmer wasn’t a good coach, you’ve never seen Tennessee have a good football coach, and you haven’t seen too many anywhere else either.

Are you related to Big Phil? You sure defend him a lot. Some of us don't like him because he tried to bury this program. Get over it

Oh, you just made it sound like he was the only reason UT won and will never win again without him.
He was the head coach when we won. Had been for long enough that he recruited every player on the team. He was a pretty huge reason why.

We most likely aren’t going to win another in our lifetimes, unfortunately. Too many of our closest competitors have built in advantages over us now.

No, I just think it’s funny that many of the same people who will try to tell me that chicken shít is chicken salad are also the same people who diminish or even totally disregard our greatest successes. Some of you will act like your mother has been slapped if someone criticizes, say, Willie Martinez, and then in the next breath go on about how the Hall of Fame coach who gave you the only championship you’ll ever see actually sucked.

Fair enough. I just don't remember him being as great a coach as others do. And comparing Heupel to him is like apples to oranges. Times have drastically changed and Heupel walked into a complete mess.

Idk how someone wins a national championship and 75 percent of their games over 16+ years without being a really good coach.

Bama and Georgia were both down for most of his tenure, Spurrier absolutely owned him. These are facts

Who the hell would want to take a job where the coach who won you your first national title in decades is fired for having his first losing season ? That sets a terrible precedent .

Fair question, but as a UT fan, I've never been as disappointed as I was every year losing to Florida with a roster full of NFL talent. Knowing you can't win with the best talent you may ever have, is much harder to take then losing with average talent. That, and I just didn't care for him personally. JMO

That hasn't been proven yet! You don't know ****! Maybe you are right. But, let's don't act like the team of the 90s that won so many games with less competition in recruiting didn't have a leg up on Heupel and his staff during these NIL times when UT isn't shelling out the money about 8-9 other teams are shelling out! Fulmer got everything he wanted while he was here. So, I am sure his staff and the donors were handing out the same or more money than any other coaching staff and donors out there! Also, Saban, Urban Meyer, Kirby Smart, and other ace recruiters weren't even around in the 90s and early 00s!!!

Steve Spurrier is one of the 10 best coaches of all time. He owned just about everyone but Bowden. Fulmer was not as good as Spurrier, but that goes for a lot of great coaches. There’s a wide gulf between “not as good as Spurrier” and “not good.”

Georgia and Bama were down in part because Tennessee was up. He beat very good Bama teams in 96 and 99 and a Bama team in 95 that was ranked all season. He also beat several very good Georgia teams.

Florida was also full of NFL talent and had one of the best coaches of all time.

Also, need I remind you, he did go undefeated to win a national championship. It isn’t like we are talking about someone who never got over the hump. He reached the promised land and beat Florida along the way to get there.

Ok

When Fulmer became a head coach, UT had a successful recruiting model that had been highly functioning for over a decade. In other words, Fulmer didn't take over a shat show with scholarship restrictions. Huge difference. Heupel is having to rebuild this program as HC. Fulmer took over a powerhouse as HC. When Fulmer had to do some rebuilding in the 2000s, it didn't turn out so well, having 2 losing seasons in his last 4
Not to originate an argument but something I have wondered about CJH and his brief time here. If he was able to do what he did in only a couple of short years as in having only a two loss team and just shy of making the requirements of the playoff in ‘22, why have we not made the NC?

This is a random question not aimed at anyone. It’s just that the trajectory set was so steep in the beginning, that I’m wondering if it was lightning in a bottle type situation. After all, we are off probation and have our full allotment of scholarships don’t we?
