Fulmer out of Stokley---Quietly.

Where has he acknowledged that he sees his shortcomings?
Abandoning his office apparently in darkness is a pretty clear admission i would think. Too afraid to move out in daylight, where he was sure to be questioned about his thoughts on the new staff and former players comments contrasting the two staffs.

I think of it as more of a milestone. It's like getting to mile 20 in a marathon -- it's a very good and happy thing, yes, but it still doesn't really mean anything unless you finish. After all, the loser of the SECCG always ends up going to a worse bowl than if they hadn't played in the game at all. (With the exception of Alabama last year, of course, and that was only because they were undefeated going in.)

Winning seasons aren't impressive in a 12-game schedule. Going to bowls doesn't mean anything when there are 40 of them. It's to Fulmer's credit that we got to Atlanta twice in the last five years, but both times it was a deeply flawed team that sort of fluked its way in when other teams in the division were down. We didn't really even improve much in those years; it's just that everybody else came down to our level.

I'm not somebody who "hates" Fulmer, but the fact of the matter is that he had a .500-ish conference record over the last five or six years of his career. We went to mediocre bowls and we lost them. We watched a bunch of other teams in the conference hire new coaches and almost immediately get better than us. Last year wasn't something that happened overnight, and 2005 wasn't the so-called "perfect storm." This program has been circling around the drain for most of a decade.

Yeah I mean I'm not denying the fact that our program was declining and fast. I was a huge advocate of replacing Fulmer. I, along with many others on here could clearly see that it was time for him to go. I hate that it needed to happen but as many have said, no one is bigger than the program.

My argument is that now that the man is gone, some on here now just can't let the past few seasons go and just appreciate all of the great things Fulmer did for the program and the university as a WHOLE. The positives far outweigh the negatives and it's like some people on here have the attitude of "yeah, he always sucked and I'm glad he's gone." It's like when you breakup with your girlfriend and you say to yourself "she was a nasty skank ho! why did I ever like her in the first place!" That's just ridiculous and frankly, Fulmer deserves better than that. His legacy as a whole SHOULD be that of someone who made enormous contributions to our program and the University. Not that "he didn't win shi!!"

Brave, I didn't say I hated Fulmer, I said I didn't like him. My statment was he didn't win shi!! after '98. I still stand by that! We have settled for less for years. We are not elite status because we fell short in alot of important games. You are measured by Championships not East titles!

The office has been vacated for over a month. It was adjacent to the Sports Information office and the space was needed due to the merging of the men's and women's SID offices. The new resident moved into the office three weeks ago.

It wasn't reported because nobody had asked until now.

Huh?

It's too soon. You could start a thread about how you saw Fulmer rummaging through tomatoes at the local Kroger and you'd end up with a 300 post thread arguing about his legacy. It's been an emotional, extremely polarizing argument for years; expecting people on either side to abruptly set all that aside and relax about it is asking them to go against basic human nature. Maybe in five years.

The positives far outweigh the negatives

Only if you are willing to ascribe infinite value to the 1998 season. Otherwise Fulmer basically had two completely different careers at UT, each about 8 or 9 years long: one in which he maybe underachieved somewhat relative to the talent he had, but yet won two conference championships and a national title; and another in which he was basically Jim Donnan or Ron Zook. The second part was fully half his career.

Look, he was a good football coach. And then other teams hired better coaches, and he didn't look like that good of a coach anymore, and so now we have another one. He didn't do anything in particular for "the University," other than to donate back some of the enormous salary he was being paid -- as lots of wealthy alums do. I just don't understand the need to beatify the guy, as though he was out there digging ditches for old UT for free in the broiling sun every day with sweat pouring off his brow. He was a good employee, and then he was an overpaid employee, and now he's a former employee. That's about it.

Okay, here's the thing: Fulmer was once a great coach that brought UT to the top. No denying that. Yet his inability to adapt, his inability to keep discipline (on and off the field), and his inability to keep momentum going after a good season his what caused his firing. Look, Fulmer WAS a great coach. He was past his prime and needed to be gone. We can at least appreciate what he did back in the 1990's, while roll our eyes at how he squandered the 2000's. The main thing is Fulmer is gone, and he's not coming back. Now, when the hell is Septemeber 5th gonna get here?!

Fulmer is the past. I'm looking toward the future.

only thing i will add is, no matter who the coach is at UT we should all support them untill the people with a better overview of the "goings on" behind the scenes says its time for a change. thats not a slur at anyone who dissliked fulmer or majors. maybe some of you have that overview. i dont so ill just support clk as i did fulmer and majors.

i dont think even the worse fulmer hater would have ben secretley pulling for him to have the kind of season he did in 08 so they could get closer to a change? if you did i wish you would just foget you even ever pretended to be a fan/supporter of the university. some of you fulmer haters are kinda coming off that way.

Fulmer didn't give his all to Tenn. wegave him all. Some of you can,t handle the truth about Phil. Hat is giving you the real lowdown on Fulmer. He sucked us dry! He backdoored Majors, to make himself like some savior. The reason he's acted like he has is his on guilt for his past behavior. He never hired anyone that threatened his job! Glad he's gone, he should have left after the NC season. He hasn't done sh!! since. Never liked him never will, don't care if you do bash me. I'm for UT not Phil! Some of you keep kissing his fat arse!

I agree with 90% of this post.

The part that I don't agree with is that I used to like the guy... that was before he, as you stated, sucked the program dry and showed his true colors. phil always had phil's best interests in mind. Honestly, I don't blame any person for that. But I do blame him for running the program into the ditch just so he could remain at the helm in the persuit of personal goals. It wasn't like the guy needed the money to support his family. He had his personal goals and he didn't care how much harm he did to the program.

Imo, Fulmer would have stayed at UT as long as it took to break the career wins record held by Neyland, even if it included winning 5 or 6 games a year to get there.

I find it hard to believe that he became coach simply because people enjoyed watching a couple of wins. What sounds more logical is:

Fulmer sensed that Dickey wanted a change or was about to make a change. Being a young ambitious coach he could think of nothing better than being the head coach at his Alma mater so he began positioning himself with the people of power (boosters). I think the bone of contention is when he started his lobbying efforts (while Majors was in the hospital or after Dickey had already decided a change would be made). Not to say that those 2 things didn’t happen simultaneously.

Not to mention that Fulmer was part of Majors' staff and if Dickey cleaned house, then Fulmer gets swept out with the rest of the trash. Not claiming to know what really happened but if I were Fulmer, damn right I would have been in there lobbying.

I thought fulmer had some type of gofer job working with the president of UT, making big money. What happened to that?

You know it's still offseason when there are damn near 300 posts dedicated to Fulmer being discovered to not be in his office on campus. He's gone. It took too long. Football starts in a little over three weeks. Haleleujah!!!!

Fulmer will be a lightening rod, subject on here for years to come

He will be as long as he continues to run his mouth all over the media.

Yep, that's right. He needs to come up with a stock answer to all questions regarding Tennessee along these lines:

"I support Tennessee in all of their endeavors and wish them nothing but the best of luck". Boring yes, truthful, maybe, but it would eventually end the continual controversy.
