Fulmer magic...

Very true if you omit the twelve years it took to get there, and the progression of things like 9-3, 7-4, 9-1, 7-5, 10-2, 5-6 leading up to your three year package. Somehow 1990 was an aberration (the middle in your three year sandwich) - very good for an even year under Majors. Too bad there's not a Cherry Bowl for cherry picking "fans".

You wrote that Majors was inconsistent and Fulmer won with Majors’ players that Majors could not win with and that is not true. Majors was at his most consistent when Fulmer stabbed him in the back.

BTW, I did not cherry pick stats. Those are the actual records for the time period you referenced. You chose the time period.
Bottom line is Johnny Majors was winning at a high level and CFP went behind his back while he was sick.

Love all the revisionist hogwash being peddled in this thread. Fulmer needed to be fired in 2008. Two losing seasons in four years, a decided drop-off in level of talent and the imminent rise of Saban, Meyer and Mark Richt necessitated change. The mistake was in hiring a new coach (Kiffin) and basically giving him an open invitation to leave ($800,000.00 buyout) as soon as his dream job came open.

Now, almost a decade later, Fulmer is selected to be the A. D. and to be the man to resurrect the program he put in the ditch as a coach. Hope he succeeds.
So glad someone remembers what actually happened. Too bad he’s back in the mix. Hope it works out.

If you consider "backstabbing" as winning with the same team that Majors couldn't consistently win with, then I guess we have significantly different perceptions. Maybe Fulmer should have deliberately lost a couple of games to make Majors look good?

Face it, based on today's values, Majors wouldn't have lasted any longer than Jones or Dooley. I wanted Majors back home as much as anybody else ... until he actually came back home - just another "sure fire" coach who wasn't.
Yeah most everyone thought we had hit a home run when Johnny came marching home. Took quite a while before we became respectable. Had some good to very good years, but never consistent. Still don’t really know what went on when majors was let go. Wish someone in the know would tell us the truth.

Fulmer is also extremely divisive. Far from uniting the fan base, Fulmer's coup will only further divide us in the long run. As you can see in this thread, there are a lot us who still can't stand him for ruining something we loved dearly.

That has been told in other threads. To simplify, Majors made the boosters mad by crying that he was not being paid enough that summer. Tennessee was having budget problems and they felt like that would not look good to give him a big raise. He had a contract on his desk for months that he refused to sign. He then had his heart attack and open heart surgery. Fulmer took over and won against GA and Florida and was 3-0. Coach Majors came back from his surgery early and made sure that he took the team back and they proceeded to win a close game against a bad LSU team and lost 3 straight to Arkansas, Alabama and South Carolina. After the SC loss Dickey fired him since he wouldn't sign the contract offered him and Fulmer was named the head coach

How could he, he was not a part of the university when they all occurred. Hamilton was the start of the downfall!
That's revisionist history. Fulmer was completely impotent without Cutcliffe. He averaged winning only 5 games per season without Cutcliffe during the last four years of his career. Fulmer was not one iota better than Dooley or Jones toward the end of his career.

You want to compare his work of 2 years to the body of his work? In 2005 was the year that Randy Sanders left during the season and 2008 he was fired before the Wyoming game. Two years to pin on him. Lets go back to the 2004 season which was the last one that did not have a major disruption. they were 10-3 and 7-1 in the SEC. He did not have Cut then either.

Edit: By the way SEC East Champs that year also!!!!!!! Lost to a top 10 Auburn twice.

You are the one who is a revisionist. He won 29 games in his last 4 years. Anyone who can divide knows that's more than 5 a year on average. You are a barefaced liar as well. He won 56 games between 99 and 06. That was without Cut. You are a troll spewing lies. Go back to the Bama board where you belong.

Fulmer started the downfall with 2 losing seasons in his last 4. He is directly responsible for the downfall of the program.

I couldn’t agree more. I have been a holdout for the past eight years believing that given the right opportunities that He would right the ship. But VOL NATION needs to look forward and forget about what we can’t change. Let’s hope Tennessee learns from the mistakes made and not repeat them. GBO

Who exactly was limiting his "right" opportunities?

They gave him what was effectively a lifetime contract if he could manage to win 8 games.

He wasn't being held back on assistants and the program routinely has had one of the biggest recruiting budgets in the conference since his time.

Fulmer and Fulmer alone started this slide into mediocrity and, until Pruitt starts winning big, I will be skeptical that he Fulmer was the right choice to get them out of this slide.

It has been said that Hamilton did limit on what he could spend on assistants. What you don't understand is that Hamilton wanted Fulmer out from the first day he became AD. He did what he could to hinder Fulmer so he could get his man in as head coach. He is the reason for the downfall!!!!! You may want to find out information from behind the scene before you just spout nonsense!!!!!!!

screw the NFL. Stand for the anthem or take their sorry asses to a cave in afghanistan. They will have a better shot at finding someone that shares their viewpoint.

I said WITHOUT Fulmer. You're either a liar or illiterate or both. You are clearly more of a Fulmer fan than a Vol at any rate. Please start your own Fulmer Felching forum and spare us your deceit.
