Fulmer job status discussion (Merged)

The mark of a desperate man is one who, when failing, seeks his source of previous success.

One word. Cutcliffe.

Phil Fulmer is a nice guy. He's the kind of guy you would want for your next door neighbor; car pool partner; Neighborhood Watch co-ordinator; or IRS auditor.

What he ain't is the type of football coach this program needs, and needs badly, right now.

The game has, sad to say, passed Phil Fulmer by.

The SEC Championships and National Championship are all beautiful jewels in Phil's crown, but those jewels are old, and starting to get a bit dusty. A fair measure of a coach, or a stock, or a garden, is what it's done over the past three seasons.

It's here that the downward trend of UT (pronounced "Fulmer") can be clearly seen. Don't take my word...go look for yourself. While you're there, look at his (a) record against Top 10 teams; (b) road record against Top 25 teams; and (c) bowl record. This combined record shows that against top-level talent, UT is fading. Badly.

We are no longer a national power, or an SEC power. Or even an SEC East power.

We're mediocre, by almost any standard.

I have nothing against CPF other than my belief that it's past time for him to go, and he (apparently) doesn't see it.

Or refuses to acknowledge it.

Who will he turn to to save 2008?

go vols.

:lolabove:
years before those mentioned...
10-3
10-3
8-4
11-2

but, That probably didn't fit the image you would like to portray....
Fulmer has been great over his career. He has been head and shoulders above Zook and others like zook and to compare them is asinine. I don't like some of the calls that were made saturday and the play of the defense really pissed me off, but let's be honest about the way we look at things. You can't take a coaches worst years and compare them to others-let's see how this season goes.

Fulmer has a losing record against half the SEC coach's he will face every year. Meyer, Richt, Spurrier, and Saban have more wins then losses vs Fulmer.

He's had some success against Richt of late to his credit. But the team we saw Saturday night doesn't look like its ready to win the SEC east this year.

Very interesting maybe we do need a change. Although I DO NOT want to see Fulmer fired, let him retire. He deserves that much.

Didn't realize 2007 was over yet :clapping: Amazing...

Over? No. But given the huge disparity between what we were told about the 2007 Vols (by the coaching staff), and what we saw with our own eyes.....

...2008 is liable to be another year that starts with more questions than answers.

I guess it all hinges on whether you choose to hold the head coach accountable for the performance of the team.

I do.

No, the question is why some are writing off 2007 already. Great to have fans that do that after 1 loss. I will continue to cheer for UT throughout the 2007 season which is only a week old.

2008 talk belongs in the recruiting forum.

He should retire after this season and go out somewhat gracefully, and still have streets named after him, and worshipers singing his praises.

I read this whole thread and I saw one name that kept coming up: Bill Cowher

He'll be coaching the Carolina Panthers after John Fox gets canned after this upcoming season. At least that's my prediction.

Even though I admire him and would take him at the drop of a dime but I don't think he'd like coaching college. He doesn't seem like a guy that likes to put up with much petty crap and much of college coaching (classes, underage drinking, recruiting, etc...) is petty crap.

Guru, It just isn't going to happen. Fulmer is going to recruit well enough to win 7-9 games a year by default. Because of that extra fortunate NC in 98, he and his coaches are lifetime fixtures for Tennessee, unless Big Daddy decides to retire on his own.
