The mark of a desperate man is one who, when failing, seeks his source of previous success.
One word. Cutcliffe.
Phil Fulmer is a nice guy. He's the kind of guy you would want for your next door neighbor; car pool partner; Neighborhood Watch co-ordinator; or IRS auditor.
What he ain't is the type of football coach this program needs, and needs badly, right now.
The game has, sad to say, passed Phil Fulmer by.
The SEC Championships and National Championship are all beautiful jewels in Phil's crown, but those jewels are old, and starting to get a bit dusty. A fair measure of a coach, or a stock, or a garden, is what it's done over the past three seasons.
It's here that the downward trend of UT (pronounced "Fulmer") can be clearly seen. Don't take my word...go look for yourself. While you're there, look at his (a) record against Top 10 teams; (b) road record against Top 25 teams; and (c) bowl record. This combined record shows that against top-level talent, UT is fading. Badly.
We are no longer a national power, or an SEC power. Or even an SEC East power.
We're mediocre, by almost any standard.
I have nothing against CPF other than my belief that it's past time for him to go, and he (apparently) doesn't see it.
Or refuses to acknowledge it.
Who will he turn to to save 2008?
go vols.
