Whose fault is it that even if UT goes 9-2 the rest of the year, the last there years will be just like Ron Zook's three years in Gainesville.
Your right and it was enough to get zook fired. If phil hadn't won that championship he'd already be gone. It's the only reason he is still here.Sadly it's shelf life still looks to be good beyond this year.Even if we bomb.

History has proven that it is difficult to fire a coach who has won a National Championship (and rarely happens). I think there has to be 2 or 3 years of consecutive losing seasons to take action (or choke and beat a player like Bob Knight).
Larry Coker would beg to differ, as would Jim Harrick.

Remember back in 2002 when Ron Zook was hired? Well we all know how that coaching career went. He had a couple of bright spots. He beat UT in Knoxville and FSU in his final game. Ultimately, I think Gator fans were really worried about the state of their program when he finally go the boot.

Zook's regular season records:
8-4
8-4
7-4
Overall: 23-12

Once Zook was sent packing Florida went out and hired the best coach available. The turnaround was instantly apparent. In two years Urban Meyer has Florida back as a national powerhouse. He's already won a conference and national championship.

Let's look at UT's regular season record over the past few years:
5-6
9-3
Overall: 14-9

So, in order to match Zook's incredible thee year run at Florida, UT needs to go 9-3 or better this season. We're already 0-1, which means in the final 11 games we need to go 9-2. Based on the team we fielded Saturday, I'm not confident we can get through our SEC schedule with just two losses. If we lose two more games, UT is the equal of the Florida Zookers. If we lose three or more, we're worse. Does the fact that that is a possibility concern anyone?

Florida got rid of Zook and won a national championship. What will Mike Hamilton do? I think UT still has talent, much like Florida did when Zook left. If we get the right coach, I think a quick turnaround is possible. It happened in Gainesville, it can happen in Knoxville.

fire fulmer now, he is no good

I don't believe the defensive issues are Fulmer's fault though. I think we will get it turned around.

You'll see Lloyd Carr gone at the end of this year, and he brought Michigan a NC in the late 90's.

He donated time and money to The Jason Foundation and he's no doubt reaping some benefits from that as well considering it's doing so well.

Are you saying he's taking money from a foundation that prevents teen suicide? You better back that up...

Is the only reason Fulmer is staying, because Hamilton likes him a lot or what? b/c other than being a good recruiter he has done NOTHING since '98.....so do we really have to lose almost every game for ole Mike to get us a new coach?:banghead2:

Nope, but I would say 5 losses this season and he is out the door.

It's not all Fulmers fault, his players are the ones out on the field not making plays. So the blame needs to be spread out over the whole team.
:banghead2::banghead2::banghead2::banghead2:
It's his job to make sure the team is ready to play, and to correct the problems so the same mistakes are not made game after game. How many times do we have to go over this?

years before those mentioned...
10-3
10-3
8-4
11-2

but, That probably didn't fit the image you would like to portray....
Fulmer has been great over his career. He has been head and shoulders above Zook and others like zook and to compare them is asinine. I don't like some of the calls that were made saturday and the play of the defense really pissed me off, but let's be honest about the way we look at things. You can't take a coaches worst years and compare them to others-let's see how this season goes.

I didn't take his worst years. I took his most recent years. Fulmer had a good run of success before Saban, Meyer, Richt, and Tubberville got here. Since then, he's been Ron Zook. Even before those guys arrived, Fulmer could never beat the best coach in the conference. Now we've got four elite coaches he'll have to play every single year.

As for Fulmer being head and shoulders above Zook: Fulmer was 2-1 against Zook. If you take away a terrible personal foul call that gave UT a chance to kick the game winning field goal he is 1-2 against the Zooker.

As much as I respect and admire Fulmer for his career accomplishments, I think it is important for an AD to look at how the program is performing in a 3-5 year period. Based on that, Fulmer is just not getting it done and we have wound up with upper level mediocrity. I do NOT want to lose to an Ark. State or another Appy St equivalent before Hamilton finally calls no mas.

I think even if the Vols win the East this year in a incredibly competive SEC he will still be on the hot seat.

Considering how we looked in the first game wouldnt that be a helluva accomplishment worthy enough of keeping your job

Winning the East would be miraculous and yes, it would give him some more job equity. Will it happen? I never say never, but wow, talk about unlikely.

That might be the worst thing to happen because he could live off of winning the SECCG for another 10 years.

I respect CPF. I love him for being loyal and the great seasons he's had here. But the window is closing on him now. He deserves respect from every UT fan because of his NC and his overall record while coaching here. However, his time is done and his prime has passed. New blood is needed

True dat.
My only hope is that if he manages to pull off a decent season, he retires with dignity. I do not want him to be fired or humiliated.

About the 14-11 over the last 25 games.I had to stop and think about that for a second when i heard it.That would get alot of good coaches job at other university's.Throw in the awful record against top ten opponents and home record as of late.Thats the reason we get no respect right now.The media knows something is not right here and there opinions reflect it.Not that i give a damn about the media's perception of tennessee football. But we are fastly becoming known for choking when it matters and generally underachieving every year.

I think TN and CPF are stuck in football purgatory. Not bad enough to say its horrible, and not good enough to validate what they're doing. All is relative, though.

Great read, Saturday night was a bad night and we got out played by a talented team, but more importantly we got out coached.
