Your right and it was enough to get zook fired. If phil hadn't won that championship he'd already be gone. It's the only reason he is still here.Sadly it's shelf life still looks to be good beyond this year.Even if we bomb.Whose fault is it that even if UT goes 9-2 the rest of the year, the last there years will be just like Ron Zook's three years in Gainesville.
Remember back in 2002 when Ron Zook was hired? Well we all know how that coaching career went. He had a couple of bright spots. He beat UT in Knoxville and FSU in his final game. Ultimately, I think Gator fans were really worried about the state of their program when he finally go the boot.
Zook's regular season records:
8-4
8-4
7-4
Overall: 23-12
Once Zook was sent packing Florida went out and hired the best coach available. The turnaround was instantly apparent. In two years Urban Meyer has Florida back as a national powerhouse. He's already won a conference and national championship.
Let's look at UT's regular season record over the past few years:
5-6
9-3
Overall: 14-9
So, in order to match Zook's incredible thee year run at Florida, UT needs to go 9-3 or better this season. We're already 0-1, which means in the final 11 games we need to go 9-2. Based on the team we fielded Saturday, I'm not confident we can get through our SEC schedule with just two losses. If we lose two more games, UT is the equal of the Florida Zookers. If we lose three or more, we're worse. Does the fact that that is a possibility concern anyone?
Florida got rid of Zook and won a national championship. What will Mike Hamilton do? I think UT still has talent, much like Florida did when Zook left. If we get the right coach, I think a quick turnaround is possible. It happened in Gainesville, it can happen in Knoxville.
History has proven that it is difficult to fire a coach who has won a National Championship (and rarely happens). I think there has to be 2 or 3 years of consecutive losing seasons to take action (or choke and beat a player like Bob Knight).
I don't believe the defensive issues are Fulmer's fault though. I think we will get it turned around.
:banghead2::banghead2::banghead2::banghead2:It's not all Fulmers fault, his players are the ones out on the field not making plays. So the blame needs to be spread out over the whole team.

years before those mentioned...
10-3
10-3
8-4
11-2
but, That probably didn't fit the image you would like to portray....
Fulmer has been great over his career. He has been head and shoulders above Zook and others like zook and to compare them is asinine. I don't like some of the calls that were made saturday and the play of the defense really pissed me off, but let's be honest about the way we look at things. You can't take a coaches worst years and compare them to others-let's see how this season goes.
I think even if the Vols win the East this year in a incredibly competive SEC he will still be on the hot seat.
Considering how we looked in the first game wouldnt that be a helluva accomplishment worthy enough of keeping your job
