Fulmer is not out of the woods yet...

I'm not negative right now. I've been optimistic about 2008 and the opportunity to have a new QB and new OC.

But that can all change if we start seeing and hearing the same show in these big games.
you're looking nearly a year away and setting ultimatums in a sense....it seems pretty negative to me...

We had no (senior) leaders on the team this year. The closest thing to a leader we had was Foster on O and Mayo on D. Uhh oh...

I liked Mayo in that role, but he's gone. So, that's why I posted earlier that I think Eric Berry needs to step up as a sophomore. We can't wait for his senior year since he may leave before then.

I think AF has a good work ethic, and I'm glad he's coming back (unless that changes), but I'm not sure who's the right guy to lead the O yet. He could do it, but he's got to stop trash talking and just start producing on the field. Drayton may help him with learning to be a better leader as well. :dunno:

of course, all of this could just be looking/reaching for straws to start new topics on old subjects.

if we have the same show in big games because of offensive play calling then we will have identified the problem with the play calling at UT. Phil Fulmer, the UT AD, and Us For not getting rid of CPF.

It isn't about the comparison. The bottom line is, Nutt got an extension and it was meaningless. A coach can be let go at anytime.

Maybe at some schools, but what has Hamilton done that would indicate the same behavior here? Not that I'm saying it's always a good thing to be so tolerant of so many mediocre seasons, but that's just the way it is here.

Agree. 2008 is not a year for ultimatums. CPF will be back in 2009 unless the Vols lay some super egg (5-6). He's only done that once in his entire career, so the probabilities are quite low, IMO.

No, it's not. Fulmer did not get his extension because Hamilton felt like it was the time to reward him for the 1990's.

Let's try this again.

With this many new coaches, I guarantee Hamilton gives CPF a couple years to get everything ironed out unless our whole team completely implodes and we go under 500.

You may be right, but the new coaches excuse is pretty week. This will be the tenth year since the last SEC championship. It is time to deliver.

I agree...I would just say that Hamilton's history with Phil would lead me to think that he doesn't agree.

Yes it is.

No it's not. I'd take CPF over Nutt anyday of the week.

It's an example of a coach that had won the SEC Coach of the year award, took a team to the SECCG and lost, then went on to be fired the following season.

It can happen and it's not out of the question here.

That's true in theory, but I would imagine that it would take a MUCH worse season from CPF this year for Hamilton to fire him. 8-4, which was Nutt's record last year, wouldn't even come close to doing it.

The only game I'm sorta worried about is georgia. Florida has no running game, no defense and has 2 stars: tebow and harvin, that can be controlled with a good plan on D. Georgia's got moreno and stafford, but UT's offense should be really powerful next year with all the new coaches. It will come down to the UT-UGA game for the SEC title.

I'd expect Florida's defense to be better next season. Losing 9 starters from 06 can leave you with a lot of holes to fill.

Good plan on D doesn't really go with Chavis. This is the guy that kept doing the same thing after halftime(even though it had given up 24 and 28 1st half points) in both losses to Alabama and Florida.

Good plan on D + Chavis= I'm not betting on it.
Good plan= Lay off the receivers about ten yards every play and make "john parker wilson allen smith etc..etc.." look like the next coming of joe namath. Also make dj hall look like a actual good reciever.

agree the reset button has been set. CPF is here at least for next year. So we all need to deal with it. Plus this is nice to have a new group to help. Now work on the defense. CPF still knows his job and knows he needs to work like hell to keep it.

I am the first to say so long to Cutcliffe and his predictable and conservative O schemes. Cut was one hell of a QB coach however. The elephant in the room is our defense. Chavis has been slipping for the past couple or so seasons. I know we have had injuries, but so does every big BCS program.
It is the opinion of many that Chief succeeds only when he has the talent advantage and he has no clue how to out scheme a good O coordinator.
CPF will be in the building for the next three to five years easy as long as the Vols don't totally meltdown. Clawson has walked into a dream opportunity. If UT gets it turned around and his offense produces, he may just slide into the HC job when CPF decides to pack it in.

Before we start burning down Knoxville and throwing confetti all over Cumberland Ave, remember that we still have games against Florida, Georgia, Bama, and an added on game with Auburn mixed in between next season. No excuses will be tolerated if we under perform again in these big games. Oregon and LSU have already proven that you can win in the first season of a new OC's tenure. I'm sure there are other schools that have done it also, but they are not on the tip of my tongue. And if Auburn rolls us up, then that will be a team with a new OC that has managed to get their act together.

So no excuses from the big man about youth or running a "new offenese" because we all know that the new offense is essentially the old offense with a few more wrinkles (hopefully).

Auburn went undefeated the first season Al Borges was their offensive coordinator.

jeez folks. relax.

this team next year has a ton of potential. but we still have some issues personnel wise that will cause us some problems. Until we get some serious depth and talent on the DL, the Def will struggle up front, again. the secondary should be a true strength and the LB's won't drop off.

offensively, it depends on the qb (i for one am banking on the fact that JC has been here forever it seems and should be able to step in quite nicely). O line, RB, WR and TE should be a ok. s/t i would think can only get better.

if the offense and new coaches get on the same page quickly, and i don't think there's any reason to think they won't, we are a 10 win team easy next year.

the schedule isn't soft, esp early, UCLA, FL and Aub early on, trip to athens will NOT be easy, nor will the trip to Columbia.

short of going thru each game on the schedule, 9-3/10-2 reg season is about right, and i'm leaning to 10-2 right now.

so let's just enjoy the excitement of the day for what it is.....don't let the newness wear off so fast.

i think for the first time in a very long time we have something to be excited about.
