Fulmer in the Bahamas

He earned the chance to turn it around. It was the perfect storm that led to his demise. Saban at Bama, Spurrier at USC, Urban Meyer at UF and Richt at UGA combined to hurt Vols recruiting, resulting in 4-5 fewer four and five star recruits every year. That, more than any reason led to the decline from a top 4 program to a top 20 program. Then came the demand to hire a OC to add some pop to the offense. Fulmer complied and hired Clawson, but as was pointed out by numerous fans, his offense took a full year to install successfully. When his first year didn't go well, Hamilton pulled the plug and the years in the football wilderness began with the short-sighted contract with Kiffen. Hindsight says we would have been much better off giving College Football Hall of Fame Coach Fulmer at least one more year. Fulmer's situation was very similar to Bobby Bowden at FSU and JoPa. Both had down years late in their careers and fans were clamoring for them to be fired because "the game had passed them by". Both turned it around. Fulmer may have as well.
So true. Everyone knew it, too, especially all of those programs clamoring to hire him once he was available.

Bad hires does not equate to Fulmer deserving more time, sorry.

I also guess you’ve forgotten what AD made the worst hire of all.
There was no way Fulmer could have anticipated what Pruitt would do. You blaming him for that is petty. He’s responsible for what he believes is the best hire given the information he has at that point in time.

He’s not responsible for someone going rogue, just as you are not responsible for a family member or friend who goes rogue.

He was finished. Fulmer lost his edge after the NC and never got it back.
You’re probably right. In Fulmer’s defense, I will say that he was not helped out by Mike Hamilton very much his last 2-3 years. Hamilton seemed to envision himself as a mini Jeremy Foley and publicly talked about how not winning championships was unacceptable, etc. Hamilton was, for whatever value he had as a person, a weak leader with poor people skills. I would not have appreciated Hamilton’s help were I Fulmer. Probably didn’t ultimately make a difference though.

Well there’s also the fact that Pruiit was an absolute dog **** football coach. Is the person who hired him not responsible for that?

Did you interact with him at all? Everyone I've known who has met him says he is very personable.

many, many times... I have called him many times, even since he has no longer been coaching, asking a favor and he has yet to not follow through. Asked favors of Dooley and Jones and they never followed through..

Phil always struck me as a man of integrity and character. Sure, he has failings just as any other human. But he always seemed to be a man with a good heart.

Wish he was given

A. Sabbatical
B. 10 more years of coaching

You put the biggest VFL alive, with the only actual results in my lifetime, in a changing environment and gave him realistically 2 years of learning that evolution. He had not understood and had a bad staff at the time for modern CFB.

Guarantee you he would have had some good years between 2010 and 2020.

I do think he could have turned it around!
I have my doubts about it based on his recruiting digression, his competitiveness v new systems and upcoming coaches, and his energy levels which seemed to be leveling out v early 90s. That being said, Phil could have tripped and fell and performed better that the train wreck that we experienced in the following decade of disaster.

Hamilton's handling of the Pearl offenses and his 100% clueless contract situation with Lane Kiffin were all the evidence that I needed to know that he was not qualified to do what he was doing.

I worked for Coach Fulmer for several years and he is a fantastic guy. Listen, we could've always done better but this man had way more success than failures.

If a small kid came up to him to get an autograph he would always kneel down and get on their level. I was always impressed with that. He absolutely loved the university and you won’t see that anymore unfortunately. Thanks for posting his pic.

He’s not responsible for anyone else’s actions. Just like you are not responsible for anyone else’s actions. You think he tried to intentionally hire someone bad? Geez. Use your brain.

I missed this from the minute Lane arrived. It was just palpable after growing up with Johnny and Phil where it felt like we were rooting for one of our own.

We are used to it now and have forgotten what that was like.

OMG dude. Don’t come at anyone about “using their brain” and bring that with it. He was the highest ranking member of of the AD. The buck ultimately stopped with him. He’s absolutely responsible whether he “tried to intentionally hire someone bad” or not. I really didn’t mean to start all of this on a Monday holiday but I can IMMEDIATELY tell that you’ve never dealt with HR issues in a professional setting. This is a 100 million dollar business. Don’t be naive.
