Fulmer Family Meltdown

Who else is just worn out and ready for the mess to be over?

Right here, definitely. I'm so apathetic about this season it's ubelievable. I sit in front of the TV, yell at it a couple times (although only half-heartedly), and just shake my head for the rest of the game. I never really thought we had a chance against SC, and that's sad.

i seriously doubt that..

have you seen some of the idiots that attend UT games? I don't view it as improbable in the least

from an article in 2005:

"For us to be a part of the Vol Nation, I just can't believe that people would be so cruel sometimes," he (Jim Clausen) said. "That hurts, and expectations sometimes become unrealistic. When my sons tell me that Randy's girls are having a tough time at school and people are saying things to the family and the girls are afraid to go trick or treating, that's (B.S.)."

Well on saturdays its fine to say what we think ,But If you run in to the man out in public well thats just plain ole disrespectful and to say things to his family, they are not the coaching staff, plain and simple!!

I'd hope that's not true about Phil's family, but didn't Sanders actually have young kids that were getting harassed at school?

I would suspect this is urban legend. These coaches live in high-end neighborhoods, not trailer parks. Mark Richt's kids trick or treat in my area and I don't put razor blades in their apples or anything, but maybe some nice oranges spiked with vodka.

I'll keep my opinion of Fulmer's future based on the lack of success on the football field and leave his personal family moments for what they are - personal.

I agree to a point. Phil does give them quite a bit of exposure and its not like the media is going to his house peaking in the windows.

The Fulmers seem to be really fine people. Except for the crap Alabama threw out, we've been golden with the NCAA and Philip has run a clean program. He's someone we should all be very proud of....

That said, I do think we may need a change at UT, but you know, sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for....:frown:

Maybe it sounds harsh, but coaching is a tough profession. Very, very few guys get to work in one place for 25 or 30 years and retire with a nice gold watch. The Fulmers have enjoyed an unusually stable, vasty lucrative situation for the last couple of decades. I'm unable to see the end of it as tragic. Remember the story about how Fulmer's wife asked him to consider retiring after 1998 and he reportedly answered, "What else could I do that would make so much money?"

It's clearly beyond the pale for anybody to say a critical word to a man's wife or children, though.

Fulmer has made a HUGE amount of money since 1998.

I guess I worry more about bringing in a new coach and going through what Michigan is going through now, or worse. How many coaches did Bama go through before Saban? I know we're not Bama, but I'm not convinced that a change won't be painful.

I was told Friday by another UT coach, not a football coach, that Fulmer's retirement would come sooner rather than later. Take it for what it is worth - just wanted to pass it along.

The venom thats been injected on the board towards Fulmer should have been directed to Mike Hamilton. To be a D-1 head coach you have to have a big ego. Phil's not going to step down. He's not going to listen to the ranting of a bunch of arm chair quarterbacks. All this frustration should have been directed at Mike Hamilton if change is what is truely wanted. If all the fans that have vented each week about Fulmer's decline would have taken two seconds to send thier comments to Mike Hamilton and hold him responsible and request that his job be put on the line, the effectivness would have bee far greater. If you start at the top, change flows down hill. Hamilton in order to secure his job would be more apt to eliminate the problem.

As far as Fulmer's family, it is a part of UT football because it is all they've known. Phil has dedicted his life to UT football and the University. He and his wife and daughters have been great for the University. I applaud Phil for including his family and allowing them to be a part. That is what has allowed the recruits to always comment on how they felt like part of the family when they came in for visits.

For anyone to ever question the Fulmer's dedication and commitment is absurd. Question the last 9 years, question the OC, question scheduling of tough opponents, but don't question that Phil Fulmer and family are great Volunteers, great people, and regards of how this plays out, Phil was one hell of a coach!

Hamilton sits quitely in the back out of respect for CPF meanwhile CPF defends himself while staring at the ground.

The hagiography is getting a little old. He's not a hero or national treasure that has to be tiptoed around. Fulmer remains what he has always been, which is an average football coach with a real talent for recruiting. Ten years ago that was good enough to win in the SEC; it simply isn't anymore. It's time to thank him for his service and wish him well, but to act as though we're somehow jettisoning a legend is absurd.

And as far as "dedicat[ing] his life to UT football and the University," Fulmer sure didn't seem to think that Majors deserved any extra points for that during his power grab 16 years ago. I'm not sure why he should be afforded any more respect for it now that his own time is up.

I heard the same thing. Fulmer bears ultimate responsibility for what is going on at the end, and I do believe it is the end. His ego and stubborness to accept the reality of the situation has caused a great deal of pain and frusturation for many including his family and friends. People want to point to his character as a person who continues to fight and won't let go. Sometimes the ultimate show of character is expressed in the ability to admit it is over, to let go and to let everyone move on.

Well when it comes to filthy lucre (money)............

It could be that the university has not offered a buyout yet. If that is true then I don't blame Phil. Under this scenario if he actually was to step down and had not been offered a buyout, they owe him nothing. I would wait on the offer then step down and I'm sure that is where they are at this point.

Let's not compare Phil to Mother Teresa. He was paid fairly handsomely for that dedication. And as to your last sentence, the key operative word is "was".

Don't feel sorry for his family. They are very rich and his daughters -though not beauty queens- went through the Maryville City School System being more popular than any heavy chested cheerleader could ever be just because their dad was UT's football coach. As a previous poster said they didn't have to be on the sideline during the games or in the lockeroom afterward. They liked the attention just like their mom and milked it for all it was worth.
