Supposedly Phil's wife and daughter melted down in the locker room after the SoCar debacle. Much weeping and hugging of the players as if they were saying goodbye. Boys, I think its a lock, the only question is when.

I feel sorry for his family having to go through that.. i say we just let Phil finish out the season and retire, we dont have much to play for now anyway

Even though I want a change, that sounds very sad if true.

If it is true, perhaps there was some validity to the idea that had UT won out after the Bama game that Fulmer would be safe.

explain to me why Phil doesnt announce his retirement effective at the end of the season so that he can go out with some love like Carr.

They are extremely nice people, so it is sad that they are getting drug through this. My wife and I were in several classes with Courtney in 2003, and she said at that time that she hated all the negative stuff her father had to go through. It must be out of control nowadays.

I just wish the man would step down gracefully, so we could all reflect on the good stuff that he has done and MOVE on.

I think so many forget this part of the "game" or maybe some choose to forget it, but I agree, it is very sad. I am for change as much as the next person, but let's not forget that Coach Fulmer is a human being with feelings as is his family. I feel for everyone involved.

I totally agree. Maybe now, it will be so obvious that a change is coming, that he'll reduce his resistance and just work out an exit strategy with the administration. If he announced that he's leaving at season's end, he could get a little love shown, and possibly even pull a few folks into the stadium to help him beat Kentucky. It would be great if he could pull out these last three wins, so he could end his career with at least a Music City Bowl.

Go Vols.

I heard the same thing. Fulmer bears ultimate responsibility for what is going on at the end, and I do believe it is the end. His ego and stubborness to accept the reality of the situation has caused a great deal of pain and frusturation for many including his family and friends. People want to point to his character as a person who continues to fight and won't let go. Sometimes the ultimate show of character is expressed in the ability to admit it is over, to let go and to let everyone move on.

That seems like the best thing, he would get so much support for the rest of the season and his family wouldnt have to go through so much negativity... He cant sacrifice his family going through this for 6 million dollars..

Please do not take this wrong....but i submit that the family being so involved in the program is a personal choice by the Fulmers. Most coaches do not involve the family so much in order to prevent what they are having to go through now.
I know it is hard on them and i do not wish it on any one.

True, but the fact of the matter is that his family is involved and he should do the right thing and make an announcement.. not for us fans but for his family

It does sucks that it's come to this. But if we don't make changes when they are obviously necessary, we might as well move to division 2 and make Clawson the HC.

after hearing the stories about how Sanders' family was treated by Vol "fans" around Knoxville I have to think the Fulmer family is getting it worse. It's amazing how personal some people take a football game

I'd hope that's not true about Phil's family, but didn't Sanders actually have young kids that were getting harassed at school?

I believe so and they were also scared to even go trick-or-treating (it's been a while so I may be a bit off on the details)

That's disgusting. Anyone that acted like that towards a coaches family should be BANNED from wearing Orange for life.

In all honesty, from some of the crap I've read here, we may have some of those culprits here at The Nation.

I'm looking at some of those guys on this thread. Mention of his family's locker room cry-fest, must have brought out the humanity in them.

No way I believe any regular poster on VN would ever take it that far. I doubt the people that do things like that could even turn on a computer much less log on to VN
