Like Tom Landry. Great seasons. The last few for both were tough. Many wanted both out, but everyone hated the way it was handled to end their careers.

Army in '86 is still surreal to me. Had the game won and opted to punt instead of taking a safety - the cadets may not have had many bigger upsets post WWII.

weren't they a bit far out to do that? I could be wrong but I thought we were at about the 25..was my 2nd game as a student..came agonizingly close to completing a pass on last play of game.

But man..there were a TON of no excuse type losses(virginia, rutgers, army, etc) for majors..I love johnny but he is remembered as one of the weaker coaches in sec history if he doesn't get to 1985, and how in the world in this era WOULD he?

From 1977-1984 the vols were ranked in only one year at any point..5 wks in 1979, never higher than 17th. I had forgotten how bad it actually was. That is a crazy level of underachieving at tennessee.

Having said that, 1985 turned things around, but today he isn't getting a 6th yr, much less a 9th..

I had to look it up. According to the NYT article linked above we were on our own 17 when Bob Garmon lined up to punt - so Garmon was probably standing on or inside the 10 yard line.

Tennessee lost one home game while I was in college and it was by less than a TD against the Gators. Fulmer made my college experience awesome.
