Guys...I'm no Fulmerite. Far from it. I wanted nothing to do with his former regime, when Cutcliffe's name was being mentioned. But in light of all that's occurred in the past 24 or so hours, I'm becoming more and more convinced that he indeed would be a perfect salesman for UT from here on out.

Hamilton just botched this hire, IMHO. I feel Dooley is among the least qualified, regardless if he's a high character guy or not. Patterson and Wittingham are high character guys and are unquestionably qualified for this job. Bottom line, Hamilton didn't get it done...and that is precisely why Fulmer was paid $6million to resign.

In light of all this...whether it's because Hamilton was being a tightwad with the checkbook...whether he just couldn't sell this program to the other top-shelf candidates, or he made the current staff an obstacle...it doesn't matter.

I honestly think, from this point forward, Fulmer would be the better man for the job, as he:

1) Has more passion for the University and overseeing it's welfare. He is a former player here and of course a coach....his home is here. He was an integral part of Tennessee's rise to national prominence. And few will want to see it return more than he does.

Conversely, Hamilton is a Clemson transplant. He arrived during the declining years. He was never a UT fan prior to this. He therefore has no real appreciation for Tennessee's traditions and storied past.

2) As a Nationally recruiter who was successful oftentimes, in selling athletes on the virtue of playing for Tennessee, Fulmer...outside of loyalties to Cutcliffe...would be a much better "Salesman" to other coaching prospects in future searches.

In summary, I would like to see the BOT tell Hammy...IT'S TIME!

Yes, I'm sure Fulmer will "right the ship." I feel so much better now.

Fulmer's already making millions from his buyout---why would he want to become an AD and actually have to work?

Fulmer should NEVER be offered the AD job. Period.
24hrs ago, I felt the same way...but after realizing that we have a guy in place with no ties to UT...no real concern other than to keep his job...that putting a former coach (even if there is still some hard feelings) would be a better option. Another option is to see Heath Shuler leave the Congress and be our AD.

I just want someone who can sell Tennessee, loves it and isn't willing to undersell the program and University. Shuler knows politics by now, so I figure he'd know how to run the show.

Power? And to get some serious payback for the one that gave him the boot?

I believe that Fulmer's bitterness would hurt the program if he became AD. Just my two cents.

I think he is bitter at Hamilton, and not the program. He still has a ton of support...so I doubt he has any ambitions to sabotage the program.

Better, IMHO, than someone who has whiffed twice in a row and sees Tennessee as a second rate SEC program...and when hiring only goes after second rate prospects.

How good was Fulmer at "selling the program" when he got completely fat and lazy? That's what I thought.

yeah I can see fulmer with a 90 million dollar check book, I wonder how many doughnuts that would buy him?

this young guy dooley just could be what we need. he is young and good for a few years until peyton retires and then,BINGO, we have peyton manning for a coach. this could be in the thinking.

Yes. The fact that (in your opinion) Hamilton hired the wrong coach suddenly and magically transformed Fulmer into someone qualified to do complex business negotiations and money management.

I love your logic.

i do not want an overweight gym teacher anywhere near the AD job. he is not anywhere close to being quailified to do the job. he cannot be openminded to any solutions outside his own 300lb ego

Do you see any correlation between these two statements?

Most fans (I'm including myself in this group) would have bitterness towards him, however and would do everything possible to not make anyone forget that he was the reason all of this in the first place. Had he not driven this program into the ditch the last 5 years he was here and then turned around and gotten a $6 million handshake on his way out the door, we wouldn't be in the position where our program is an afterthought and our AD is having to count pennies (allegedly) to find money to hire a coach...

The end game isn't going to happen until we find out what Dooley JR does. Hamilton has no business being on the unemployment line, its not his fault Pete Carrol thought he was magically a good NFL coach this year and the AD at USC got rejected by two others until he got to a coach who has had a hard on for USC since he was in diapers.

We don't need reason and well thought out posts right now... just emotionally charged rants.

For those who keep bringing up the two coaches at TCU and Boise St, respectively, understand this: they both said very frankly they were not leaving their jobs for a bigger school. Quality of life is much more important to them than money and fame. (Interviews before the BCS game they played). I'm not a Hamilton fan by any means, but I really do feel for the guy as he had to get SOMETHING done by Friday. My only question was why not just make one of the current guys (Kippy, Chaney) the HC and fill in the blanks? I guess we'll see with Dooley but I imagine he may be a sacrificial lamb in this. The problem Tennessee is facing is the program as a whole is walking a tight line. You do not want to be another Nebraska where no sane coach would be willing to come out of fear for being fired if they lose more than 1 or 2 games due to the fan's delusion of grandeur, and be in the dumps for years to come. I know they are starting to get back now, but that was after years of being pretty bad.
