ncaafootball.com - Fulmer and Pearl joke and drum up support for Vols on caravan

``Anybody can have a good year or two,'' Pearl said before the event. ``The expectations for football I think are almost always going to be different, and I don't know if that's fair, but he's created this incredible expectation. If we keep winning in basketball, we'll wind up doing the same.''

Sounds like bruce plans on being around for a while :dance2:

yea ofcourse but thats becuase the bball team has had more recent success than the football team, and its also looking like we could win a championship in the next couple of years... but we all still have high expectations for the football team

Then you read it wrong. It will take a long, long time before a down year in bball causes the kind of disappointment you see with fball. UT football is still the #1 game in town and people have more grounded expectations. What Pearl is doing is trying to get to that point, which is admirable.

I can tell you this....if Phil loses 4 games again this year, that hot seat will go nuclear

that's the reason Phil is just killing me, because I expect so much from our program

football expectations are very high, anytime u keep hearing that a coach is on the hot seat after an 9-4 season, the expectations are pretty high

It's not necessarily the 9-4 season alone, but several consecutive seasons without an SEC championship, a BCS bowl, or even much bowl success period.

Of course expectations are higher here than an average school, but this school has above average tradition and support.

It's fun to contrast Fulmer and Pearl, and their outlook on things. Fulmer seems satisfied with winning enough games to keep his job. Pearl wants to raise expectations by winning and therefore make it harder on himself.

Fulmer: ``I told him a few days ago, 'Bruce, you screwed up. You spoiled them too fast,''' Fulmer told the crowd of more than 200 who gathered for lunch Monday.

This is one reason why I don't like Fulmer...

Fulmer again: ``He hasn't asked me to do anything crazy. I would listen, but I would have to really think about it,'' Fulmer said. ``We're at a lot different stages in our careers.''

He has that right. Someone is on the way up, someone is on the way down. Right now they are just passing in the middle.

This may have already been discussed but I saw a poll in the KNS which asked if you had a chance at the best season tickets available which sport would it be? Mens bb was almost a 2 to 1 victor over fb. I thought that spoke volumes for Bruce's work!

yea thats because he has brought excitement to the program finally in bball and we will probably be in contention for a title in bball next season, but let's not write the football team off here tho, we signed a top 5 class and we have some experienced players from last years team, and from what i hear we have "toughened" up in the middle of that defense and thats the only thing that kept us out of national title contention last season...

At this point popcorn, I want them to prove it. Judging by the last several years, I am very skeptical. True, we had a top 5 class last year, and you definitely cannot do it without the players. But didn't we also have a few top classes and underperform with those?
