Tennessee's sophomore fullback, who entered pre-season camp in the neighborhood of 260 pounds, said Thursday morning that he had trimmed down to "245-250," and head coach Derek Dooley has noticed.
Fugate has impressed Dooley in camp.
"He needed to (lose weight). He's moving a little bit better," Dooley said. "But he's a steady hand there. He's one of those guys that you kind of take for granted and them if you lose him, you go, 'Oh my God, we're in trouble.'"

"We've put Channing at running back some. Get in there, he knows the protections, he can run the ball," Dooley said. "I mean, he got … Didn't he get 3,000 yards? Mr. 3-stack."

Fugate said his continued comfort at the fullback spot could open more opportunities across the offense.

"They told me I just need to keep on working, get more physical and just be as physical as possible at fullback and they can try to move me around other places once I get fullback down pretty good," Fugate said. "Just some different places, line me up some different places and stuff like that."

Amsler was one of my all time favorite Vols. Those two yards he got against Virginia made a season.

Wasn't his nickname Greg "the keg" Amsler on campus?

A fullback that had to trim down to get to 250 lbs. is scary! There are not but a few Mike's in the SEC with equivelant size, and they don't really get to generate momentum before a hit. If he is learning the offense and the position effectively, he will be an absolute hoss.

oddly enough DD was out that game with an injury

Ha! Small world. He might have been the gamechanger VA. I remember that game as classic Johnnyball.

What was their QBs name?

Major Major.... Major Washington?

It seems like forever since we've had a strong running game....

Shawn Moore... you are thinking of the West Virginia QB named Major Harris

Amsler was a hoss and Fugate may be even more athletic. The more I see Fugate and watch his highlights, the more excited I get. This kid has turned into my favorite player this season. Can you imagine 4th and goal with this kid toting the rock. Hard to stop a 250 pound diesel locomotive!

He won't be Amsler until he starts hurdling DBs!

One of the most awesome moves I have ever seen by a Vol running back. If I were Dooley I would make videos of Amsler and Poles and tell Fugate this is what real blue collar football is all about. I do think Channing is faster in the open field. He has a 6th gear.

Also, let's not forget about the Crossville Comet, Curt Watson.

Channing is not as athletic as Greg was. closer to Roland Poles who was not bad...

If Fugate is 2/3rds the blocker Poles was, I'll be happy. I think Poles was our best blocking FB in many, many years. He put LBs on their a$$--and then told them to like it. Had a bit of a mean streak. Amsler was good-very athletic, one of our best running FBs.

3 observations after watching that amsler video
1. I liked his class, always handing the football to the official in the end zone.
2. Did you see that ole miss cheerleader that they cut to a couple minutes in? She turned and looked at the camera over her shoulder as if to say "Gee, we can't stop him, can we?". Awesome video clip
3. I am impressed with a back of this size either on a screen in the flat, or on a pitch going wide. It creates a HUGE mismatch against a smaller corner or safety coming up. The LB will be late getting there, and if the play is a quick ball bam-bam play, we can spring somebody for some huge yards.

GO VOLS! Great Video, thanks for sharing.

I noticed that the preferred walk-on from Alamo is now listed on the roster as a FB. Freshman Austin Taylor, 6'2" 240lbs...taking care of bidness. Playing LB and FB in HS, he was named the All-West Tennessee Offensive Player of the Year. Everybody thought that he was recruited to UT as a LB.

What I always remember about Amsler is his play in the Bowl game in his final season. Nice way to get out. Most teams don't feature the fullback as a primary offensive weapon, I beleive he got the MVP trophy in the bowl game, was remarkable.
