Not since the speedy FB Bryce and the rugged FB Amsler have the Vols had such a versatile and powerful FB at its' core. Fugate has such good hands for catching passes down the middle or the grit to peel off surprising runs off the tackles. I suspect Dooley has plans to use his skills. The first game was simply a tune-up I suspect and Fugate will see plenty of action as the season progresses. A solid running game is crucial for the Vols because we have a good idea of what Bray/Hunter/Rodgers can do thru the air.:clapping:

I wanted to see him get the ball on those goal line plays in the 4th.

Hope he is as good as Amsler. Don't think he isas fast as Bryson was.

Me too. He caught 3(?) passes but I don't think we ever handed it off to him in the backfield. I'm sure it's in the playbook but that we didn't want to show it against Montana.

It's not like it really mattered if we scored on that drive or not.

It's nice that Chaney has him as a receiving option, in part, because that is one more threat a defense must cover when he is on the field. But he is not the runner that Poole, lane, etc are. They represent a better opportunity for an explosive play. So I hope he is mainly a very effective blocker. If he does that, I will be very pleased.

Yes, we would hate to let our future opponents know we have a fullback dive play in the playbook.

I really enjoyed seeing Fugate drag that Grizzly for about 6 yards on the end of that return.

Bryson was a tailback that was moved because of the stable we had. Bryson was a starting tailback in the NFL as well. I do like Fugate as a true fullback.

Bryson was one of, if not the fastest players on the team.

We would be incredibly fortunate to ever have another Shawn Bryson. Fugate looked relatively slow, but he got a little work done.

Fugate is more of a true fullback, and of course he doesnt have the speed Shawn did. Shawn ran in the 4.3's before going to the pros and was a 6'2 230 pound fullback that played 8 years in the NFL as a tailback.

Fugate could actually end up being more and more of a short yardage option and could play some one back on passing downs as our runnings backs struggle with blitz pickup.
