FSU to "privatize"

I know this news article is about FSU, but as you read through it mentions that UF has BEEN doing this. Essentially these schools in Florida (UF, UCF, and now FSU) privatize their athletic departments shielding them from public requests and scrutiny, yet they are still tax payer funded and are awarded non profit institution / public institution rights in court, legal proceedings, etc. The State of Florida is unbelievable (trust me). Interesting read.

Why do I care?

I dont know why you personally would care because I dont know you. You cared enough to comment in the thread so that's certainly bewildering. But had you of read it, it basically gives these schools free reign between their athletic department and their boosters thus allowing more open pay-for-play opportunities and other shenanigans during recruitment etc. See, Florida is part of the SEC as is Tennessee and most of us on this board know this.......so yes, most of us care. Plus its offseason, this is something to talk about.

I would imagine that there HAVE to be reporting requirements to the state and NCAA. It sure doesn't sound like it but if there are not this should be very closely scrutinized by either state or federal authorities. I promise you that if the federal government threatened to pull funding for state institutions or, more importantly, just state support in general things would change very quickly.

OP, since this has been going on at UF why now be outraged? Yes, UF won the SEC East in 2015-16 but neither of those teams were worth a crap. UF hasn't won squat in a decade. If UF is somehow cheating they aren't getting their money's worth.

If UT is cheating....well that's just sad!

To be honest this is the first I've heard about schools being able to do this. I was trying to find out how long UF has actually had this implemented but Google isnt being cooperative. Agreed though, if they are being shadier than most schools they arent getting their monies worth so far. I'm sure every school tows the line (or jumps over it from time to time) but I would think with this body of security it would be harder for say a whistle blower or media outlet of some type to bring any shenanigans to light as the school could essentially refuse documents. Essentially this would create a broader and easier path to cheating.......I feel that all schools should be on a level recruiting/playing field. Just my 2 cents obviously.

Let's be honest, NCAA/SEC won't even move on a school who's coach is on FBI wire tap TWICE talking about paying players large sums of money to play at LSU. Full 100% dead to rights...and NOTHING. Why would we think they'd challenge money moving around through a protected 3rd party entity...quite possibly Adidas/Nike new plan to deal with funneling of funds. NCAA/SEC will turn a blind eye to this, but Bruce Pearl is tarred and feathered for 3 YEAR show cause for having an underclassman at a cook out and lying about it. The sooner NCAA is abolished and just pay the players, the better. Billions of dollars at stake, so, money is going to fine it's way to players, legally or not.

Agreed......NCAA is certainly part of, if not most of the problem. Politics, private companies, watchdog groups, government regulation departments, etc sure seem to get super shady when there's a lot of money at stake. The only bad thing about paying the players is you're going to have your rich "Yankee" teams and your super poor Oakland A teams.

Use duckduckgo or other university type search engines their kids have developed as apps. If you like what Alphabet/Google decides they want you to see, by all means use Google OR scroll through the 10,000 other things they've placed in front of what they don't want you to see. It's rare I use google these days and my search life is so much better.

You would have thought something this shady would have been executed while Fisher was still there.

This isn't a new concept...UGA has had an Athletic Association as a separate entity (although I believe there's some board member-type crossover) for a while now. Some public universities have a real estate foundations that handle certain types of capital projects and land purchases. I don't believe it's necessarily an attempt to be shady in principle, but I'd think it does somewhat protect those entities from open records requests that public institutions receive.

The only revelation here is that FSU finally raised enough money privately to do what UF and other schools have done for literally decades, hence my first post in this thread.

Renovations to Doak Campbell Stadium in the 90s were funded primarily by taxpayer dollars, because FSU added ā€œclassroomsā€ inside the stadium, hence my first post in this thread.

This is not news.

I’ll also add it’s no coincidence FSU is making this move around the same time the ACC Network launches.

Well timed heady play.
