Derek Dooley had never been a coordinator. Until La. Tech, he'd never been a head coach and he was also the AD. We'd all agree that La Tech and UT are not the same kind of job.
So it's simple. He is/was gonna be learning on the job. Just in terms of coaching during a game, it seems a little better than last year. Still clock management issues, special team issues, which is kind of his baby. He doesn't seem AS easily flustered and he's not putting the team down publicly.
Do we as fans deserve a coach who's not having to learn on the job? Sure. Was there one of those available at the time of Dooley's hire. Possibly one, Kippy Brown. The powers that be didn't want him, and they hired Dooley.
As for Dooley, for a guy who has been in a tough situation with coaches coming and going and players having to learn new systems...well, not an easy road and publicly, he's saying the right things this year, which is an improvement and shows he's willing to change.
I dunno what I'm trying to say, just...Unless Hart can get a proven HC with experience, maybe he could turn himself into the real deal. I dunno.
