This just in: Tennessee’s not the team bowl scouts are drooling over anymore.
In fact, it’s been that way for a couple of years now and was only reinforced this past weekend when the Capital One Bowl passed on Tennessee in favor of Arkansas.
But the reality, after checking with some of the people at the Capital One Bowl, is that the Vols were never really a strong consideration to go to Orlando this year.
The final vote came down to Arkansas and Auburn, and Tennessee wasn’t even in the picture.
That’s despite Tennessee Athletics Director Mike Hamilton telling several people, including the Vols’ coaches, that they were headed to the Capital One Bowl if Florida beat Arkansas in the SEC Championship Game.
Arkansas Athletics Director Frank Broyles was determined not to let that happen and lobbied hard for the Razorbacks to be invited to the Capital One, the highest paying non-BCS bowl game.
That pushed the Vols to the Outback Bowl in Tampa to face Penn State, which is also an attractive New Year’s Day bowl at a nice locale.Truthfully, Tennessee didn’t deserve to go to a better bowl than Arkansas this year. But in the SEC’s quirky bowl system, “deserve” often times doesn’t have anything to do with it.
One thing’s for sure, though. Tennessee had better sell its allotment of 13,000 tickets this year for the Outback Bowl, and the Vols’ fans had better show up in Tampa.
Otherwise, it might be a long time before the Vols are invited back to Florida again for a bowl game.

I believe that we did sell out our tickets and from what I gather from the news and internet reports, tickets aren't that easy to come by-cheap. As opposed to the Cotton Bowl where you can get a ticket for 10 bones-that is pathetic.

Bingo. What an embarassment to Nebr. and Aub. I went to the Cotton two years ago and I don't recall tix being that easy to come by.

What happened? It seems the rest of the country doesn't wear orange colored glasses! Our bowl selections haven't been that great for awhile. Its a double edged sword. Do you go to the meaningless bowl game you're unhappy with? Do you stay home to show your displeasure and jepordize future bowl selections?

Whoever wrote that was obviously just trying to stir things up. There's just no way we deserved to go be chosen over Arkansas and Auburn.

Rexvol, sometimes it seems you need a zanax (xanax sp?). Your level of worry over being a targeted fan in an unappreciative world outside the orange state goes to new levels.

How Rutgers must feel, yet we compalin. They have a stellar season, drop 2 to very good teams and don't even make it to NY Eve. They end up in a toilet boil against a 7-5 team and wax their butts. We got a good deal.

I totally agree, I was just addressing the comment about us selling out tickets. we are and average football team so I say that our bowl selections have reflected our national status.

I had an extra pair of tickets for that Cotton Bowl and ended up unloading them for $20 because there were no takers.

What happened? OC Sanders and starting QB Clausen.

Their bowl desirability has diminished as their last BCS/SEC Championship grows smaller in the rear view mirror.

Arkansas has the advantage of being fresh and new. UT as an also ran is a worn out story.

UT needs to win the SEC and return to the BCS... then make a habit of it... and they probably need to give Cut as much money as necessary to keep him in town as OC to do it.

what does the statistically speaking second best qb in tennessee history have to do with any of this? everything else about your post makes sense, except you have to totally shoot yourself in the foot to start it out.

Atleast this time Rex started one on the main board and one on the recruiting board instead of back to back on the main board.

ahhhh, OS, why so bitter? Is it because you are face to face with another tangible example of the deterioration of a once championship program? well, thank your man-love, CPF.

No, it's because EVERYONE on this site is tired of your agenda and your 4 threads every morning trying to beat it at us.

You do more for making people tire of your agenda than I ever could do proving it wrong with actual stats.
