an initial report. Here's some of the scuttlebut around town. 1. A substantial number of what I would consider to be the "smarts" in town are picking UT to win the SEC tournament. 2. Team to watch in the tournament=Xavier. 3. New Mexico is going to spend a bunch of money on their new coach. Look for Rob Evans and Larry Eustachy to be mentioned. 4. Minnesota actually believes they can lure Flip Saunders from the NBA. The prevailing thought is that if the Pistons win the title, Flip will declare his pro career complete and return to his alma mater. 5. Amazingly, it appears that the sentiment at Michigan is to keep Tommy Ammaker. That's simply idiotic.

Well, let's hope they're as smart as they think they are!

Wouldn't that be a lateral move at best for Eustachy given his current position at Southern Mississippi?

I think New Mexico is actually a place much better equipped to win than Southern Miss. The only drawback is that Lobo fans are as delusional in their expectations as any in college hoops. They act as if they're UCLA or Arizona.

It is pretty impressive to be driving several hours in the desert at night without a sign of anything and then come over a hill and then see this enormous spawling city of lights and neon.

Having driven that a couple of times from Phx, there is nothing impressive about it. Southwest Airlines is the only choice for desert travel. $80 round-trip

Edit: I mean the drive not the sight of Vegas.

I wanted to check out the Grand Canyon south of Vegas first then drive on to Vegas.

We drove from Vegas to Tempe for the UT National Championship game. That is some seriously desolate country.

I drove from Knoxville, through Nashville, Memphis, Oklahoma City, the panhandle of Texas, Tumcamari(sp?), Flagstaff and several other places. That was a looooooong drive to Vegas.

Yup - made that drive twice. Both times in a Penske. I stayed in Little Rock, Elk City OK, and Grants NM. Lots of neat little towns - tough drive though.

Fun drive huh? Did the southern route on my way out to AZ and W. Texas is a wasteland.

Do those experts really think our guys can keep it up for 4 games vs. LSU, Miss, UF, Vandy? I just don't know if our style of play fits a 4 games in 4 days schedule. I hope I am very wrong though.

To come upon the city during the daylight hours while driving, Vegas seems just a shout away, but realistically it's more like 25-30 miles off.

Unless your in a convertible with a hot chick, a cooler full of drinks and headed to the red rocks, driving anywhere around Vegas is nuts.

Vegas in daylight hours is def not the same. I don't see it much when I'm there but it still sucks.

Good stuff, Hat.

My take on Amaker is that Michigan HAD to close out Ohio St. to save his job. They had that game won, and blew it. An absolute choke job, a la Buzz Peterson circa 2002. Had the 'Weenies won, they would be squarely back in the bubble mix. Now, they're pretty much off the board. Therefore, keeping Amaker is inexcusable.

(FWIW, speaking of Buzz: Coastal closed out their season at 15-15 overall, 7-7 in the conference. A pretty big step backward, as last year's squad was 2 points away from beating a good Winthrop team and getting into the Dance.)

(speaking of Winthrop: Hat, what's your take on Gregg Marshall and that particular squad? We saw 'em last year, and it took a miracle shot by Lofton for UT to get past them. They're apparently better this year, and now ranked for the first time. Mid-major assassin or paper tiger?)

I was wondering where you had been (posts have been fewer....that explains it). Have a cocktail @ the Voodo lounge for me (my favorite veiw in all of Vegas..outdoors on the patio at night). Worth the limo ride from the Belagio.

We drove out to Vegas in May of '95. Driving through Oklahoma City at that time was pretty surreal. We were in an RV and had a Rotweiler and cat with us. The dog got out at every stop to pee. The cat didn't get out until we were 50 miles from Vegas, in the middle of the desert. Funny part is, the cat sprang from the RV and ran out in the desert and brought back a decapitated lizzard. It was neat seeing the airplanes and all the lights of Vegas from that far away, too.

The first time I saw the desert from driving in was amazing. Driving north from 40 through Santa Fe and into Taos is one that I highly recommend. For more beauty, head west out of Taos and up to Pagosa Springs Col. I love the west and the southwest has much beauty to be seen.

Actually I enjoy flying into Vegas,driving out to Hoover Dam,in route to seeing my sister in Claremont,CA,driving down to San Deigo as well. I enjoy NYC as well so maybe I just enjoy traveling about.

Coming into Vegas is always a sight to behold. Leaving Vegas is usually done with tired body and bloodshot eyes.

Gregg Marshall is as good a young coach as there is in America. Winthrop can play with anyone. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them playing on the second weekend.

Northwest is my favorite, though. Seattle and Spokane give me excuses to be there a couple of times each per year and I look forward to them. Although, the back part of Lake PLeasant(outside of phoenix) for bluff diving and knee boarding through a 100 ft deep canyon are pretty spectacular!!
