As Americans we have always grown up with the notion of rooting for the underdog. From Rocky to the Bad News Bears we have cheered for those up and coming teams to shock the world and take down the superior opponent. And there is no bigger underdog than the little brother. All their lives they have been picked on and compared to older siblings, trying so hard to live up to expectations.

This Saturday is no different.

Tennessee finally takes the "Cutcliffe show" on the road to Tiger High to take on Memphis State. The Tigers are looking to upset the state’s big brother in the Vols, and put their season in a tailspin for the second year. (you know how those pesky little brothers are) As the discussion has been brought up by Mike Hamilton and the sports radio masses of the miserable, Tennessee has nothing to gain from this and everything to lose…and Memphis knows it.

Many see this game as a way for the Vols to promote the program, which in turn would boost recruiting, provided they win. However it seems that due to a less than dominant effort by Tennessee, the pop is gone. Now if I were living in Memphis or the surrounding area, then I would be glad to see Tennessee come to town. But for the sake of the program nothing good really results from playing them. It’s like when you finally realize that momma was right about fighting with little brother. Now we have no choice but to put up with the middle child in the mid-state, but hey they are getting what'’ coming to them in November.

Memphis State has been playing the role of the rebellious little brother for a number of years. Everyone knows they are not quite as good as the real thing, but they find a way to grab attention, by causing trouble for big brother. And just like an immature little brother, they define their whole existence by one victory. (living in the past…sound familiar?) Sure they have put on a good show for the folks, but in the end you know they are going to get beat.

And while I’m on the subject I would like to remind the people of the city of Memphis is in the state of Tennessee. I used to live there, and I get tired of hearing Memphis and Ole Miss fans telling Vol fans to go home. YOU ARE IN TENNESSEE! And why Ole Miss fans think they can claim it is still strange to me. (breath…breath…ok)

Bottom line is that there is no one that Memphis State wants to beat worse than Tennessee. And despite the loss of southern defensive guru Joe Lee Dunn, they will come to play. Tennessee does have one advantage in that they will not have the distractions of being at home. But nonetheless it is time for Tennessee to finally step up and beat soundly the teams they are supposed to beat.

It’s time to show little brother his place.

I'm looking forward to this season BigTime!
I think we will have a decent year this year, but I think we are a year or two away from seeing what these guys can really do. If we can get another class like this in the next couple of years we could make some noise.

At least I'll get to see the Orange and White on TV more this year. Thank you Bruce!

I disagree. I grew up and live now in Middle Tennessee. I lived Memphis 4 years while in post-grad, and I lived in Knoxville for a while.

I can affirm unequivocably that Memphis is the largest city in the entire state of Mississippi.

And FYI, native Memphians love to hear that assessment. Try it sometime.

I lived out that way for awhile too, wouldn't make me mad if Mississippi annexed them.:hi:

I was born in West Tennessee and lived in Memphis for a while. I know how stupid they are.

I agree. Mississippi taking Memphis would help both states in a couple of ways.
1. The IQ in both states would go up
2. Teen preg % would go down in both states.

First of all, the school is now named the University of Memphis, not Memphis State. Comments like the one above are the reason so many sports fans around the south and especially here in Memphis consider Tennessee fans to be a bunch of arrogant jackasses. I have been a Volunteer fan for over 40 years and it is a pain in the ass to have to try to convince everybody that not all Vol fans are as full of themselves as you are.

Sorry but they can change the name, but they'll always be Memphis State and this Vol fan could care less if a Memphis State fan thinks about him. If that makes me an arrogant jackass well so be it. GO VOLS!!!!!

Chill out, H-man. It's "Beat Tiger High" week and it's just smack talk. I'm pretty sure that the above posters are aware of the name change, but their point is that Memphis "State" is a definition of the caliber of competition. There's a good bit of bad blood between the intrastate rivalry, and a lot of folks on the good side of the state believe that Memphis "accidentally" breaking off and "accidentally" floating down the Mississippi and out to sea (and the throngs of a hurricane) would only better our beloved homeland. I lived in Cordova for 4 years during Med School, so I can honestly vouch my agreement in opinion. No hate toward you or your neighborhood intended.

Am totally chilled brother. I'm glad you had a chance to move away so you wouldn't be "stupid" as all folks in Memphis are according to stormy. Everybody seems to have missed the reference to that comment. I'm done with this assinine conversation.

I would never say (and I doubt that Storm intended to imply) that everyone in Memphis is "stupid." I feel like I received a medical education there that was on par with a lot of my Ivy-league colleagues, for a fraction of the private school cost.

However, the bad blood between the schools, the intrastate recruiting battles, indisputable crime, and the down-right ignorance of Memphis politics leave people in East Tennessee with a bad taste when it comes to this discussion.

On a different note, how is Cordova these days? I lived in the Reserve and worked out at CAC. Last time I drove through, that part of town had really exploded.

It's pretty ironic that you spelled asinine incorrectly.

Him would be me , I could care less if Memphis State fans think all Vol fans are arrogant . 20 games to 1 allows for a little arrogance.
