I felt so embarrassed out here in Long Beach where alot of Duck fans are at. Last night wearing my orange polo and my camo Power T hat (keeping it Tennessee real in the L.B.C.) getting my drink on at the sports bar down the street...some Trojan fans walked upto me and said, "The Vols showed awesome effort and if you were deeper you could of beat them with your game plan. You played them way better than our Trojans did last season with a deep roster." I hadn't thought about that....so I Googled that games stats this morning and saw this:

#4 Trojans @ #10 Ducks
USC vs. Oregon - Team Stats - October 31, 2009 - College Football - SI.com

#7 Ducks @ Tennessee
University of Tennessee Athletics Football

As young as we are and with out a true passing game clicking yet....we did play Oregon better than the mighty top 5 recruiting class grabbing every year U.S.C. Trojans.

Just some things to think about...if you look at it that way...it wasn't as bad as we think with such a young no depth having team.

As I said, the coaching staff wasn't the problem in this game. We just don't have the talent/depth. Dooley's recruiting classes over the next three years better be great, otherwise we'll fall even further behind in the SEC.

We played a good game in the first half. But did this game remind anybody else of the bowl game last year vs VT? We play great the first half and then right before the half we give up a big play and then get dominated in the second half. I was having deja vu last night.

The game felt like we were trying to keep a huge bolder from rolling down a steep hill. Early it was like, "wow, we are moving this thing!", our foot slipped once and we lost a lot of momentum, if their foot slipped it just wasn't much momentum lost b/c we were going up hill. When we fell, the rock came rolling down fast......and there was nothing we could do but watch.

Great post. One thing to look at in last night's game: someone brought up the tackling getting sloppy. When you are playing a game with the lack of depth we're playing with, fatigue is going to become a major factor. When you're tired, you have to depend on the basics, i.e. good form tackling, holding on to the ball, not forcing the ball into coverage, solid blocking, etc. Look for the coaches to work with this team on the basics. Poor tackling killed us last night. Wilcox, Thompson, & Smith will be in the defense's ear all week about "wrapping up" when tackling.

There is no quick fix for the program. Dooley has said from the get go that this is a rebuilding process. Patience my fellow Vol fans, patience. Running Dooley out of here on a rail after just one season will not improve our team. It will send us into an even steeper tailspin.

I'm just finally glad to be talking about lack of depth and inexperience being the reasons we lost a game instead of COACHING ERRORS...it's great to be a Tennessee Vol!!!

Outside of Saban and his crew, and based striclty on what we have seen thus far, I honestly don't know if I would want another coaching staff in the SEC right now...

I have to agree tackling was a major problem but the depth killed us last night, Tn always seems to get better as the year progresses.....Go Vols!!!

I cant believe it, but your post is the same feeling i had during the game. I was screaming and yelling and my gf just keep saying "didnt you say we were going to lose bad?" my comment was lets enjoy it while it and last and who knows..... then the wheels came off after halftime

My wife and I are sitting here laughing at this. Same story in our living room. Actually, I bet this exact scenario played itself out in lots of Vol living rooms. :)

Usually, I would be complaining about how we shoulda won that game and its just some stupid mistakes by players and coaches. But its weird because I have been comforted by knowing that Oregon was just better and deeper than us. Not that we sucked or were horrible, just that they beat us with depth, thus they are better than us.

On the bright side I have faith like many of you do in Dooley and Wilcox to keep this thing rolling. Also, we are virtually losing NO ONE from either side of the ball that doesn't have a potentially better replacement waiting (i.e., Gerald Jones < Justin Hunter). I will use the catch he made on the goaline as an argument for this illustration.

It's Great to be a Tennessee Vol!!!

Even better news - this Oregon team is better than last year's. Quote from Chip Kelly this preseason - "We're going to play 25-30 guys on defense."

Beat Florida.

I actually feel better today than last Sunday. I believe we have the coaching staff that can get us back on track fast, and fix the problems we have. Beating UTM did nothing to help us get better IMO. Dooley and Wilcox just need the players to work with, and we're going in the right direction.
