Assuming we are able to take care of Mizzou/SC/Ky/Vandy, where we should be heavy favorites in all of them, the Bama game really doesn’t affect our chances of winning the East.

Beat Bama, lose to Georgia, we don’t win the East.

Beat Bama, beat Georgia, win the East.

Lose to Bama, beat Georgia, win the East.

Lose to Bama, lose to Georgia, don’t win the East.

So really this game is a matter of just giving us a little cushion to possibly blow one later on and still win the division. It all comes down to what we do against Georgia, regardless of how Saturday goes.

Honestly, I wish we were playing Georgia this weekend. They have been struggling, but they’re going to figure it out. It would be nice to catch them right now while we’re read hot, and they’re working on some issues.

I'm not delusional enough to believe that UT has any chance of going to the playoffs this season.

I do know that as a fanbase, we NEED this victory worse than a crackhead needs a fix when they wake up.

15 years is long enough.

Don’t get me wrong, I want this win more this year than any other year in recent history.

I guess I’m just saying it’s interesting to note that even if we lose, we still control our own destiny

We have already exceeded my expectations. Looks like we should go 10-2 if we do what we should and that is worst case. Being able to make Bama and Georgia a competitive matchup,!!!! Saturday can’t get here fast enough.

I do think we get either Bama or Georgia. Getting both, well that would be mystifying.
Here’s to a great Saturday and a fun filled week of the build up excitement!

Yes we must beat UGA to get to Atlanta.
Does that make the Bama game irrelevant?
Not exactly...in a scenario where we were to loose to USCe but beat UGA and UGA to beat USCe it sets up a three way tie breaker that goes to West divisional record...so the Bama game would be relevant.

Also, it's Bama and I HATE THE ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE!!!

I would argue that it is very relevant from an SEC east perspective as well. Say we beat Ala and lose to UGA. UGA still has games against FLA and @ Kentucky (who are pretty good if they get their QB back), and @ MS State which is as hot as any team right now. Anyway, it is Alabama. That is relevant enough.

People need to wake up! Are we undefeated? YES! But we haven't even played the tough part of our schedule yet. Remember we were in the exact same position in 2016 but we beat Florida AND Georgia and wound up in the freaking Music City Bowl! It ain't over until ALL the games are played! We need to beat Bama like they served us our supper cold. Until then we are nothing! Go Vols!

By that point we needed an OT win to beat App State, a Hail Mary to beat a Georgia team we should have beaten by 20, and an absurd comeback to beat Florida. The red flags were all there.

Whatever red flag Pitt many have shown us has been clearly cleaned up. Florida is a 5 point win on the scoreboard, but we did that to ourselves. That game was out of reach late in the 4th.

This is NOT the 2016 team.

Agreed, it's s not over til it's over. The season could still go sour, but as opposed to 2016 we don't have a nitwit snake oil salesman as head coach.

If we go 10-2 with losses to Bama and UGA then I wouldn’t say we’re nothing. I’d say that’s a helluva season.

ummmm what about lose to Bama, beat Georgia and lose to “someone else.”

Then that Bama game becomes very relevant.

I love Tennessee, and I think they are playing great right now. However they are not on the level yet where you just automatically count all wins. Don’t get me wrong……I don’t think any of the other teams will beat Tennessee.

However every conference game is relevant, especially one this big……..you never k ow what’s happening down the road.

I’ll take the win now, because I don’t know the future……..it’s definitely relevant.

If UT goes 10-2 it will be exceeding reasonable expectations. Year 2 after the mess that CJH started with and this much buzz. Just amazing.

If bama wins the meltdown around here will be comical and unwarranted.
Coach heup is 10x better than Butch just relax win lose or draw this team is gonna bring it every week they will play hard be well prepared and execute at a high level… they are gaining confidence and will play like they expect to win and have elite Qb play and play calling… this will be nothing like the 2016 team if we beat UGA and Florida this year I will bet the house we are in Atlanta…

11-1 team losing only to UGA makes the playoff.

OP, you didn't follow the math all the way through.

If our games against Bama and UGa existed in isolation, you would be right. But it's an 8-game SEC slate, and every one of those eight games can be important.

If we beat Bama this weekend, and follow that up with a win over UGa (you correctly point out that game is super-important, it effectively has the weight of any two other SEC games because of tie-breaker considerations), we have a nice cushion for closing out the season. But if we were to lose to Bama then beat UGa, the Bulldogs are praying for us to lose just one of the remaining SEC contests, which would put them back on top in the East. And any team CAN lose to any other team on any given weekend in college football. Strange things happen with oblong balls.

This game is important. It is HUGE as a rivalry game, it is MASSIVE psychologically to end the longest streak against us, but it is also important in the mechanics of winning the East and getting to Atlanta.

Go Vols!

However, I do believe it has major impact on the national landscape. Imagine if these situations playout:

1. Vols beat Bama, lose close to Georgia
-Georgia and Bama meet in SEC Championship. Georgia wins and Bama now has two losses. There is a possibility that a one loss Tennessee gets in to the playoff.

2. Vols lose to Bama, beat Georgia
-Vols go to SEC Championship to face Bama. And I have a real hard time thinking that this team (or maybe any for that matter) can beat Bama twice in one year. Luckily we didn't waste that one win in this scenario. Vols have a legitimate chance to win the SEC and make the playoff.

And of course:

3. Vols beat Bama, Vols beat Georgia
-See you all in Atlanta

4. Vols lose to Bama, Vols lose to Georgia
-No SEC Championship, no playoff

This assumes that Georgia doesn't trip up and lose a game they aren't supposed to lose. Anything can happen this early in the season and all games are relavent in the SEC. We need to win every SEC game we can.
