From a psychological standpoint, this wasn't unexpected.

I'll keep the academic mumbo jumbo to a minimum.

There are three theories at play where the Vols are concerned:

1. Transition. The Vols are transitioning from a system built around superior individuals with a surrounding cast of bodies to a system where each player is expected to contribute equally. This transition is tough, especially for the players who are used to shouldering the team and have forgotten how to be a team player (if they ever were.)

2. Transaction. The players can't participate in a mutually beneficial relationship with the coaching staff until they have finished their transition into the new system and mindset. There is a clock involved as the relationship between the coaches and the University and athletic department is largely dependant on the players finishing the transition.

3. Persistence. The players have to believe they can work in the system - any system - and see the process through. This is helped by a positive culture of fans, coaches, and University that encourages them to persevere. It can also be hurt by a lack of support.

We're seeing the result of a team stuck in transition and a coaching staff trying to snap them out of their sticking place. It's not pretty. This game could be the wake-up call they need, or it could short out the mentally weaker players and cost everyone.

Tough season, yes. Don't be part of the problem for the team.

Are you saying there's a chance we will play for the SEC championship this year or next?

3... Our fans are going to be the biggest hindrance to Pruitt's recruiting.

Florida's really fortunate that they're not a team in transition. If they were, we'd be kicking their butts.

Nice bit o' sarcasm there, credit for that.

I didn't address the specific issues with Florida because they're not my team. It's apparent that there is a difference between their transition/transaction placement and ours.

While we have a coach who has a stack of national championship rings, he's not from Tennessee and none of them are from time as a head coach. Mullen also doesn't have any as a head coach, but he is able to speak to players from the position of having been part of the Florida ecosystem fairly recently and during a time of prosperity.

I don't expect everyone to lock in to what I'm saying. It's sound theory but not for everyone.

AshG, you're probably better equipped than I to create a new thread for "Vol Fans, From a Psychological Standpoint."

Look forward to seeing whether you cite Kübler-Ross' Stages of Grief, or Abramson's Hopelessness Theory of Depression.

I suggest you hurry, though.

Hah.

After a loss like this, posts involving more substance than a few grunts and "Fire [insert random person here]" won't go far. Reading comprehension goes up after wins, though, so there is hope.

I get sick of hearing someone whining about the fans costing a team recruits. They just got boat raced by probably the worst FLorida team in a while. So i guess the fans are supposed to be pumping sunshine up everyone's rears about how great we're going to be in the future. Truth is no one knows what kind of head coach Pruitt will turn out to be. We do know it was another gamble and if those kids take what the fans say over the coach, i don't want them anyway. Might be snowflakes or something. Fans have a right to leave the stadium when a bad product is put before them and forget coming here for your sunshine pumping report.

I have evolved far past the neandrathal responses which normally accompany a loss. I have reached a point of enlightenment where I can say that my post game feelings revolve around a desire for the officiating crew to have their skin rot off their body and for the earth to open tomorrow morning and swallow the entire UF campus all who are affiliated therewith. I find this to be far more healthy than saying bad things about our players or coaches.

I'll expect your paper after Nov 3rd then?

If this is what we should have expected psychologically, they should give us some Prozac or something with our ticket purchases.

I disagree with this fla team being worst in a while. 2013 and 2017 fla teams were worse than this one. The game tonight played out as a series of unfortunate events. It was Newtons first law and since there was no unbalanced force to act upon it, it continued. Possibly had Pope either made it into the endzone, or even gone out of bounds and retained possession, that could have changed how things played out, but what happened happened, and the motion continued.
