From a Cincinnati Message Board:

After watching the game three times I have to say I saw a lot more half effort blocking from the o line than bad running by poole. there is an off tackle run in particular where Im pretty sure poole would have had a huge touchdown run that the lineman just stepped away from the defender to look an see what was going on btw that guy tackled poole. just saying......

Montana knew what every other team we play this year knows. Poole can be an explosive player. So they attacked the line and still couldn't keep him from nearly reaching a hundred yes.... when he split time with Lane.

Id be glad to see our other opponents stack it to hold Poole, bc then we'll get to see plenty more bray to hunter 80 yard td passes

I've been out of the loop for a while with work. I'm confused. Is our baseball team scrimmaging the Reds or are we playing Ohio States JV football in an exhibition?

I believe he is going to be the real package- He ran hard sat night and provided leadership both on the sideline and on the field. I hope he stays healthy. Reminds me a bit of Chuck Webb in terms of his cuts and toughness:)

I've never liked Poole. I just want the best back to play and if it's Poole then I will support.

But Poole just has never been a fav of mine. Not sure why, I just don't like him.
It's those plays where some backs give a little extra effort and run like they're possessed. Poole just doesn't have it. Lane will be starting after a few more games.

We shouldn't be so hard on Poole yet. I heard earlier that Richardson from AL only averaged 2.8 yds per carry, and 37 total yards, and they were playing Kent State.

Was it Poole or Lane....Lane or Poole....? I couldn't tell because the announcer kept screwing it up.

You'd think that the announcer could tell the difference between 1 significant digit (Lane's #4) and 2 significant digits (Poole's #28)...

This gem also came from their board

I think this line was made solely on name and not first week performance. Both teams played an FCS opponent. UC went into the second quarter up 20 and the game was done by the half. Tennessee was up just 28-9 in the third quarter and ended up giving up 346 yards of offense. Just looking at Montana's runningbacks run 22 times for 104 yards makes me feel pretty good about Pead's chances. The only way I can see Tennessee making a game of this is if it's a high scoring game. Their defense is pretty poor. For Tennessee to win they'd have to win something like 35-31. We really need this win and it would be great if we could do it by a lot.

They really seem to think we both played the same team

On another note, I like how Cincy fans seem to be trying to argue the point that all FCS teams are of the same skill level

I also like how their game was "done by the half" and we were "only up 28-9 in the 3rd". Our game was done at 28-0 in the second when we quit. Is that bad on our part...yes...we shouldn't stop but our game was never in doubt. Hopefully we are seeing a small fraction of their fans that they probably see from coming to our board.

That's very possible... AP wasn't very good. But would Montana's 2nd and 3rd team do it? Our 2nd and third-team offense put up 30 points on AP in the second half and threw exactly one pass in the fourth quarter.
Yes. I am pretty sure they would.

FWIW, most of Montana's yardage that some Cincy fans take so much solace in came against reserves. At the end of the 1st half, Montana had 183 yards with 80 coming on one big play resulting from a blown coverage by a Fr.

I think our problem is that you don't think we are going to be any better than Montana. And that is a mistaken assumption.

". If you cannot dominate the line of scrimmage against Austin Peay, whom we all agree is not a good team, even for FCS, I have grave concerns against the likes of Tennessee, NC State and the BEast teams. Pead, Poteat, Wynn, et al., may all be fantastic backs but will have no room to run against real competition."

:good!:.
Vol fan here but also an AP grad in 1981. Back in the day, Peay had a good division 2 program 1977 - 1985. After that football at the Peay went downhill and up until about 5 years ago didn't even have a schollarship progam. to put things in perspective,Western KY would probably win by 50 against AP. So, lay'n 72 points on APSU is not all that impressive. A good TN high school might get 30 on em.

Agreed. I remember back sometime in the 90's UT Martin played Bethel College in Bethel's first year of organized football. UTM scored over 90 points against them and Keith Olberman (when he was on ESPN and mattered) was virtually dogging UTM for doing it.
The next week ESPN made it a point to show how much UTM scored and again make fun of them.

Food for thought.

GO VOLS!!!

UT wins. Not a huge margin and we give up some points.

But when the dust settles, UT still wins.

So there have been several posters who have indicated that UT "quit" or "took their foot off the gas" when the score went to 28-0 (or in the second half). I am wondering how you define that.

If you look at the play-by play, after UT went up 28-0, up until the last possession of the game, UT ran 30 plays. The run-pass % was exactly 50-50. UT also passed on 6 first downs. That is not a team that "took their foot off the gas."

A review of the play-by play also shows that Bray, Hunter, and Rogers were still in the game late in the 4th quarter - up until the second-to last possession. Defensive starters were also in the game right up to the very end.

Are you saying that your team quit playing? You can't be saying that they let up on Montana to keep from running up the score? Or do you want to just ignore what actually for what you thought you saw.

By the way, virtually all UC fans know how terrible a team AP was. That's why our starters didn't play in the second half. And why our third teamers on both offense and defense played virtually the entire 4th quarter. And why UC ran ONE pass play in the 4th quarter. And still scored 31 points.

Of course, we also realize that Montana is a middling FCS team. Some of us are wondering whether any of you know that they were just a middling FCS team.

Turnovers and line play will determine the winner. They almost always do.

On that basis, we UC fans are cautiously optimistic. Good luck.

GO BEARCATS!!!!
