From 4-3 to 3-4. Has CJP done it before?

I was doing some research on CJP. I was interested to see if, when hired at GA or FSU, he had to convert a 4-3 to a 3-4.

At GA? No, Grantham ran a 3-4.

When CJP replaced Mark Stoops at FSU, they did switch from a 4-3. However, the Vols’ defensive talent is nowhere near what FSU had returning in 2013.

No guarantee they'll start off running 3-4. Remember, Coach Pruitt said he would work with the talent he has in order to field the best team he can. If that means running 4-3 the first year or two, we may be seeing a 4-3. Sunseri tried to convert to a 3-4 under Dooley when he didn't have the roster for it, and it sucked. I only expect Pruitt to go to 3-4 if he feels it can be successful with the roster.

Why does it matter? Imho, all that matters is two things....

1. He says it’s more important to adapt his scheme to the current talent/players he has and will seek to do that, and

B. He knows what a top flight, championship winning 3-4 defense looks like and the athletes he needs to make it work and get to where he needs it to get. The guy has done it multiple times in different settings....absolutely no reason to not believe he’ll replicate the success at Tennessee imo.

We’ve barely been able to put one healthy linebacker on the field (and that’s Jumper) so I can’t imagine trying to find 4 at one time for next year. After couple years of proper recruiting and development we should be a’ight

I want to get back to having guys like Kiner, Reynolds, Naumoff, and Emanuel lined up at LB (throw in the Dale Jones and Al Wilson’s too for good measure)

Would be nice to have a L.B like Eric Westmoreland too. One of the better coverage lb I remember seeing for the Vols. Near the top for TFL's also.

It'll be multiple without being multiple

Tackling will be better and pass coverage

Can't wait

CJP said he will adapt defensive style to play to the strengths of available players.

Unlike Sunseri, I expect him to delay the conversion until his second recruiting class is on campus.

Ideally we could switch back and forth but their probably isn't enough schollys to make that happen.

I highly doubt that we'd go straight to a 3-4 but you can bet that the personnel that we recruit will fit more and more into that mold.

We'll definitely be a hybrid this year but you'll see more 4-3.

I think with a season or two we can turn some of the players we have now into 3-4 players.

Also, I really want to see Bituli and DKjr as MLBs

no way you see a true 3-4. 8 scholarship linebackers and even moving guys like Warrior into the mix, the depth is just not there. That's why these growing pains are going to test people. Let Pruitt get the guys that fit his system and then see where we are. No way we see a Kirby Smart 2.0 in year 2 and sadly, a lot think we will.

Just get the fundamentals down whatever you run. Tennessee hasn't tackled or covered well in years, can't get off blocks. Fix that stuff and it will help. Tired of crap defense every year.
