Friendly Monte Kiffin Wager

I'd think Bucs fans are smart enough to realize that Monte's gone. This guy has the feel of a poorly disguised Bama or South Carolina troll.

bucsfan132....you're name says it all. If I were you, I would keep telling myself he is not coming to UT too. I bet it makes you feel better.

Of course, but as it stands right now the Bucs still have him under contract and as far as im concerned that is a leg up on all the rumors and speculation in the vols wishful thinking forums.

Well lets see lane has already fired the defensive staff and said he already knows what direction he is going in. Not to mention Gruden has seemed to accepted it and so has the Bucs owner. Also we all of a sudden are getting a extra million bucks to hire assistants which will all go to Monte. I am pretty sure this was a package deal from the beginning.

They can only stop him from going to another NFL team, not a college team, I am sorry but he is as good as gone come seasons end.

Once again, speculation and wishful thinking, what else would a new coach say after firing the defensive staff, he obviously wants it to go in a diferent direction.

But why would he fire the defensive staff that had a defense that was ranked in the top 5 in the nation? He wouldn't unless he had someone better coming. Face it, if Al Davis would have let Lane fire the D cord in Oakland Monte would have been a Raider.

"TAMPA, Fla. -- What happened on the field at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday was something Tampa Bay fans should savor.

It's going to go down as one of the final chapters of a story that won't get fully appreciated until it's over. Yes, Monte Kiffin's time as the Buccaneers' defensive coordinator -- heck, his time as the best defensive coordinator in the NFL -- appears to be coming to an end.

The man who's made the Bucs respectable since 1996 apparently will join his son, Lane, who officially will be announced as the University of Tennessee's new coach on Monday. There were no denials after the Bucs defeated the Saints, 23-20.

"It's all just speculation,'' Kiffin said. "That's all it is. I can honestly tell you it's speculation, just like it came up with the Raiders, it came up two years ago, it came up last year. So all I'm going to talk about and stay focused on is Monday Night Football, the Carolina Panthers and how about this game we just played?''

If you're still clinging to hope that Kiffin will stay in pewter forever, think again. He was given several chances to shoot down the stuff he called speculation.

"No, no, no,'' Kiffin said. "I'm going to talk about our football team.''

That's the Buccaneers, for now, and Kiffin is the kind of old-school guy who means what he says. This guy is no Bobby Petrino. He's not going to leave his team in the middle of a playoff run.

But he wouldn't deny all that could change after the season.

"Well, we'll see,'' Kiffin said. "It's all speculation. It really is. I'm just telling you, that's all I can tell you, it is speculation.''

So speculate away and picture Kiffin on Rocky Top and wearing orange and white next season. Funny, those were the same colors the Buccaneers used to wear when Kiffin arrived in Tampa Bay in 1996..."

The speculation has gone to the heads of every one on this site and you are all justifying maybe a poor decision to let go of such a good defensive staff. Only time will tell what truely happens in Tennessee but for lanes sake something good had better happen with the vols cause they will not give him years to make a difference.

Chavis' Defense was number 4 in the nation at this moment. What direction would he want to take other than family? Down?

Are you really that delusional? I'm sorry - but he's not going to be with the Bucs next year. I wonder why recruits and players are talking about being excited to be able to play under Monte Kiffin.

bucfan132 Lane sure is good a lying to the recruits.

Stephenson LB likely to stick with Tennessee commitment

You can have Lane Kiffin. The man Stephenson linebacker Nigel Mitchell-Thornton is interested in is his old man.

The expected hiring of long time NFL defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin to the new Tennessee coaching staff has players excited, but none more so than the Jaguars star.

“Right now, I’m still committed to them,” Mitchell-Thornton said. “When Coach ( Phillip) Fulmer was fired, I was probably about 60 percent committed to them. But now, Coach (Lane) Kiffin is in there, and I’m about 80-90 percent. You look at the defensive staff that he might put together, and it’s exciting.”

Mitchell-Thornton, like most UT commitments, began looking around the NCAA landscape after the firing of Fulmer. The developments of the past few days, including Lane Kiffin’s hiring, have placed his attention on the Vols.

“That peaked my interest,” Mitchell-Thornton said. “I haven’t read that much on him (Monte Kiffin), but he’s a big time NFL coach. You would come into a situation where you could learn about the NFL and how to play there before you even get to that level. That’s exciting to me. You’re just going to learn so much more.”

Mitchell-Thornton is a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150 and will take his official visit to Knoxville on Dec. 12.
