Freshmen QB Success

After watching week 1 of the college football season there were a hand full of freshmen QBs that had really good debuts.

It made me wonder what yal think could it be possible that we have that with JG next year. I hope so, from what it sounded like he was pushing Dormady for the backup so with another year in system and his leadership qualities could he be that for us next year?

As long as Jimbo Fisher or someone decent actually shows up to develop them, Tennessee will be fine.

Butch needs to hire a decent qb coach if he intends to keep laying bricks in Knoxville.

No way of telling if JG will be great or not as of yet obviously, but I do feel it's pretty much a lock that he starts next year, and we'll probably see Dormady transfer. JG fits the offense much better in terms of athleticism.

All we want is an accurate QB. If QD can complete deep balls, he should be our guy.

Peyton Manning isn't doing anything. I'm sure he would be amendable!

Why would Peyton want to be part of Tennessee with this fanbase? I mean think what would happen the first time a QB coached by Peyton has a less than spectacular season. It will be fire Peyton and he sucks.

Looks like a no confidence vote for Dobbs, he must perform much better vs. the hokie pokies .

Until UT hires a QB coach to help these kids we shouldn't expect them to improve tremendously rom year to year. To my knowledge, we really don't have a QB coach on this staff right now since Sheridan left. I could be wrong, but that's not gonna help a development of any QB on the roster. I'm pretty sure all the true freshman or RS freshman who played this well this week have an above average QB coach - Kiffin, Cheney, Sanders (see ESPN article about him recently), and Gilbert.

I will just wait and see what happens. For all you know, Sheriron Jones may be a better leader than either of them. I look forward to how they compete.

Success has a lot to do with the level of talent you're surrounded by...freshman or senior...:)

Well, the way it looks, the coaching staff doesnt have much confidence in Dobbs either, or he would have aired it out more against App State

I didn't know sheridan left :/ When was that? Been a busy summer.

Anyway, all I want is a QB who can throw the ball. Please. I don't care who he is or where he comes from. Give me a QB who can throw the ball effectively and throw receivers open so to speak. That is what this offense is missing. Teams are just loading the box and forcing us to throw which we can't do effectively.

Dobbs has been to several QB camps and worked with Manning. Dobbs is just not good at hitting moving targets. Now if you ask him to hit the goal posts, he can do that all night long. If you watch Dobbs, he ALWAYS throws behind the receiver or under throws the ball. It is what it is. He has hit his ceiling. Most have said that in order for us to take the next step, we need to improve our downfield passing. We've got what we've got. Unless Dobbs gets injured, we won't see QD. Maybe CBJ well let him get a series or two early on against VT.

I agree with you on all points. I just wonder how much better Dobbs would be if he had an actual QB coach working with him year round and during the season instead of during the summer. Just kinda pointing out small things he may be overlooking as the season goes on and you just kinda forget. I don't foresee a situation that QD plays unless Dobbs gets hurt.

The only thing I've been contemplating for this weekend is this: it doesn't seem as if Dobbs is 100% from the practice reports we saw yesterday - he was very limited, didn't throw, only ran. Now, it's entirely possible he threw during the closed portions and this is a ploy to get VT to prep for two QBs. But what if he really is limited and it effects him throwing the ball even more and he struggles more than normal? If that happens, does Butch go to QD or is he as stubborn as we've come to know and leaves Dobbs in?

I'm concerned about Dobbs as well. He is already a limited passer, but if his injury is bad enough that his passing reps will be even smaller then that does not bode well for this team.

Regardless of whether or not I like him passing, if our offense becomes even more one-dimensional on Saturday, it won't take long for Bud Foster to notice Dobbs isn't himself. At that point, it's up to our questionable offensive line to make enough holes for a consistent running game.

As for the QD situation, we all know Butch doesn't have the balls to make a decision like that. He is as conservative as they come. Dobbs would have to lose an entire leg for him to put another QB in. And even then, he might just ask Dobbs to hop around the field.

If Dobbs can't be efficient and we should know by half way thru 1st, do we pull him and let him heal or does CBJ stick with him? I think CBJ sticks with him no matter what unless Dobbs pulls himself from to much pain. CBJ doesn't seem to handle these type situations very well. You think Harbaugh will let a hurt QB that can't pass or run efficiently stay in? Saban? Smart? Fisher? Meyer? Hell no they'll play what's best for them right now and if Dobbs is really injured(Hope he isn't) I sure hope CBJ does the same

I really do like Dobbs. But IMHO, UT's passing game will improve significantly next fall regardless of which of the QB's wins the battle.

Whatever that "it" factor is that Eason and Francois demonstrated on several throws the other night.... Dobbs just doesn't seem to have it. His throws are often just not placed in the best position for the receiver to make the best play. Malone made a great play vs ASU but that was hardly a well thrown pass. It was late and short.

One of Chad Kelly's TD passes the other night makes an even better example. He perfectly led his receiver to a spot where not only was there no coverage but where the coverage couldn't close in time to stop the pass.

That ability let's good QB's given time shred zone coverage like ASU threw at UT. But they were obviously confident that Dobbs couldn't beat them with his arm.

Jones will stick with Dobbs but the template used by ASU will be seen repeatedly until Dobbs proves he can beat it. Stop the run then drop into zone coverage with a spy. Opposing D's are probably better off NOT putting a heavy pass rush on him. Just spy him up the middle and make sure you DE's don't lose outside contain.

Dobbs MUST throw the ball accurately and on time.

This will only happen if offensive line play greatly improves this year and sustains through next year.

The pass protection wasn't bad the other night. Dobbs was pressured more because he managed the pocket poorly than because the OL broke down. There were several examples but you can find one around the 8 minute mark of the 4th qtr. ASU dropped 8 into zone coverage. The pocket held for a long time then inexplicably Dobbs broke to the right allowing the DE and a LB to corner him. There was no reason for him to leave that pocket and if he did it should have been straight up field.

The OL is taking a beating and deservedly so.... but Dobbs played very poorly as well.


It is also easier to hold a pocket when you can count on the QB being where you expect him inside the pocket. Dobbs mobility and willingness to scramble makes it more difficult for the OL's to hold a pocket.

There was one particular occasion however when one of their small DL's flat out whipped Hurd and Coleman to create a jail break pass rush.

So yes... there were several breakdowns. But it wasn't all on the OL.

One play that was underutilized IMO was the quick pass to the TE. UT got good yardage both times and running it more would have forced their LB's to play more on their heels. Some hooks and drags in the short middle could have helped some too.

But can Dobbs throw those passes?
