Freshman DB’s

How many freshman can start in this secondary? Alonte seems to be a clear lock at corner and trevon flowers looks very fluid out there. Is there a chance that Baylen, Abernathy, and Osborne get phased out. Bryce is athletic as can be and Flowers looks like he might get the chance opposite Nigel. Can all three end up starting by mid season? We’ve only had 3 practices but man these young guys look impressive

I'm thinking that Alontae starts at corner opposite Buchanan with Flowers starting alongside Warrior at safety. The coaches may go with Abernathy at safety against West Virginia since he has a good deal of experience, but I expect Flowers will be a starter by the Florida game. Thompson will certainly contribute in the secondary.

The boys in Orange and White are going to pummel Will Grier's Bob Seger lookin punk ass. He better start working on his night moves, Pruitt's bringing the heat 👌🏻

I seen Tim Brando picked his "After the Season is Over Top Ten" and had West Virginia ranked #9. That I assume would include a victory over us. I'm confused because all I've heard is WV doesn't have a defense. How can you not have a defense and be considered Top Ten.

The problem lies in taking anything Tim Brando says seriously.

On the recent VQ podcast they seemed to think Taylor was a lock to start at one CB spot, that Flowers has a good shot at getting a starting spot at safety, and that Thompson will likely be in the 2 deep somewhere in the secondary with a chance to maybe make an impact in some sub-packages.

Could be a blessing and a curse this season. These new guys seem like they have much more potential to make big plays. But guys without much experience might be a bit more likely to make some busts as well.

I'm excited to see what we can get out of them.

Can't make many more busts then some of our CBs and Safety's last year.... Ahmmm Abernathy..... And basically every other DB besides Gaulden.

I'm not certain Buchanan is a starter come the WV game. Kenneth George and Thompson will push for that spot.

I think him and Abernathy start WVA
But after.... Nope.

Shamburgar may be moved from STAR to the other CB opposite Alontae.

Theo Jackson or Trey Flowers will start.

Kelly should have been speed and agility training out of his mind this off-season. But...

Early returns on George sound good so far. I’m interested to see how they bring him along. He still hasn’t played a lot of DB, so I wonder how whether they’ll try to give him some looks week 2-3, see how he does in those games, and then go on from there.

I’m glad we have some guys like Thompson and George than can really challenge Buchanan at that spot opposite Taylor. Idk about week 1, but I think at some point this season we may end up with newcomers at 3-4 spots in the secondary.

Well we have had busted coverage with vets the last 2-3 years i.e. fla 2x so maybe its time to try younger faster players on the back end regardless of experience. Cant get experience sitting on the bench

I watched Shamburger against Kentucky and he stood out to me for not playing well. Bad angles for tackles, misplaying several plays, being out of place...was not impressed.

I'm happy that Frosh have a chance to start at DB. I've always been amazed at other programs (Aub, Ala, UF, GA, etc.) who seem to find a stud DB straight out of HS and he can start. UT doesn't seem to have that sort of luck. Many of ours mostly need developing and seem to contribute when they're juniors. Even then, there is a lot of talk of VN about lack of talent or skill in the DB position.

Shamburger is receiving some coaching now. CTF and CJP are teaching fundamentals so the DB's aren't having to rely solely on raw talent as in the past.

Why do they feel the need to start making starter projections this early in the training camp? Just seeking listeners I guess.

I didn't get to watch the Kentucky game, thank God, had to listen to it. So, I can't really comment on it. But, I did watch the Alabama game and Shamburger was probably the best player on UTs defense that day. I was very impressed. I'm hoping the DB whisperer, Pruitt, works his magic on Sham and all the DBs, this year. I expect the DBs and the whole defense to be greatly improved in '18
