It is amazing how a player can hit from outside being guarded, misses from 15 ft with no one guarding you. Coach needs them shooting free throws until they can make a decent percentage. Someone posted the other day that Pat would have them shooting free throws until they dropped.Pat knew what to do. One time she found out that the players had been drinking. When they got back home she held a practice and i think it was trash bins around the court so they could throw up. Free throws have hurt us recently.Uros is the worst.

I'm really surprised, because it is really out of character for Barnes' teams to struggle at the line so much. I feel that even our worst teams under Barnes, free throws were always an emphasis and a hidden way we were able to score points. But this season everyone seems to be a bit down.

I posted this a few days ago. We are at 71.5% as a team which is low for a Barnes team at UT. But it’s just a few bringing it down. Uros, Awaka, and Mashak are at 53% and below. Everyone else is at 70% and above. We also have had games where we haven’t shot many, so a bad night brings it down.

the best ft shooters,Santi ,tyre and zz should be the ones driving the ball to the rim

Really bad FT nights are just gonna happen. What’s disheartening to me is that we have literally lost 2 games in the last few weeks simply bc of our inability to knock down FTs in crunch time. It seems we haven’t been able to rally off that and focus enough to improve/shoot better in this area. Hell we were even subpar shooting from the line against Bama, we should’ve beat them by double digits easily.

FTs are mostly mental. It is like a golfer with the yips. Once it is in your head ... it takes a mental makeover to fix it.
People try lots of things, but this is the ticket ...
Brother was putting after 12 holes the Pro at his club said, "I know what is wrong with your putting!"
Mike says, "Okay, what is it?"
Pro, "You do not believe they are going in. You are intentional putting for them to be close to the hole. If you want to make them, you have to believe they are going to go in."
Your brain has to "see" the ball going in the hole .... until that happens ... your body is confused on what it is supposed to do.
Jack Nicklaus said something like... 'he never hit a ball until he first saw it traveling the path that he had imagined in his mind's eye.'
It is called visualization and it helps the body do what the mind is envisioning.
Can we bring in a self talk specialist to get some positive self talk going on ... my favorites are Shad Helmstetter, Ph.D and Jack Canfield.
Enjoy ... ... Jim Carrey and Romeo Marquez

Unfortunately, Uros, Awaka, and Mashack are 3 of our top 5 in Free Throw Rate. We need Phillips back badly. He’s #1 in FTR by a wide margin and is hitting 82% of his free throws. JJJ is over 90% but doesn’t get to the line much.

the strange thing is santi gets nocked to the ground with a no call
There were a lot of missed calls. Near mid court, the Kentucky player bumped our player and our player got the foul. There were several charging fouls not called and Kentucky got the baskets. As for foul shooting, Kentucky shot 21 more than Tennessee.

Remember years ago teams would just hack Shaq and laugh as he missed at the FT line ? It was a very effective strategy. He practiced and worked on it and got good enough that he was no longer the center of the game plan. I don't understand why players would need the coach to force them to practice on FT's. They have to see the numbers and what it cost their team----they should want to do it out of pride in bringing their best to a game.

This was the take of Coach Barnes in a News Sentinel article today.

Seeing big guys struggle with them is somewhat understandable (However, from the Purdue games I've watched, Edey seems to knock them down regularly.) The thing that gets me is if you're a guard and you're handling the ball and shooting more, you should be shooting at least 80 percent from the line. ZZ has a good percentage, but seeing Vescovi around 70 percent is a bit surprising.

Close games are decided at the line, and the Kentucky game was definitely an example of that if they hit more at the line.

Vescovi is at 78%, JJJ is at 90%, Phillips is at 81.6%, Key is at 73.6% after missing several against UK. All very solid. Our guards shoot FT’s well.

My mistake. I was thinking that Vescovi was lower for some reason. He's gotten better throughout the year. They're missing Phillips and James contributions from the line.

One thing that I notice is that some of our players turn their bodies side ways when they shoot from the free throw line. If that works then great. The best FT shooters in HS, College, or Pro"s seem to square up straight & do the same procedures every attempt. I saw a coach on TV years ago say that at every US basketball FT line, there should be a nail in the middle of the wood (floor). When shooting the FT, if you are right handed you put you right foot dead center over the nail in front of the painted line, if left handed you put your left foot. This will line up your hand & the ball to the rim.He said that when you are lining up your foot on the nail it helps with the fear, crowd noise, & being rattled out of the shot.

Yeah Santi’s been around 85% for awhile now. Remember he’s been fighting a shoulder injury especially early this year

Does anyone else besides me think this is a tired basketball team? Defense is even starting to slack off.

It's all in the knees...start low and finish high - ball rolls of the fingers with backspin.

Uros stands stock still and pushes the ball. I'm amazed whenever he makes one.

I want to thank Tommy for doing the hard work to uncover the concept that our team should “practice shooting free throws”. If this gets to Coach Barnes, the sky is the limit.
