Freak's first Friday of spring practice, admittedly off topic thread

What happens if you go over your $500? Can they give you that Silver (or Gold) if you hit it?

I ain't done yet either.

I believe so. It's my first time doing it. I also plan on doing it for the run in Memphis as well.

Abbreviated Date night with the wife. Watching some stuff on the dvr together and begrudgingly watching some ball.

I'm actually very optimistic about the 2017 Vols, especially hearing that Shy and some guys are already participating in Spring ball. Somewhat troubling to me is that I keep seeing stuff from Phil Steele that the Gators are a top 10 team. Maybe I'm out of the loop, but how? I don't see it.

I think he hire of the QC guy is having him sit in anticipation of Shoop leaving next year, which would mean Warren moves to DC and Leeis to Secondary coach... All the great coaches are known for having a "bench" whenever someone moves on for a better postion...

I always end up more and more optimistic the closer the season gets.

I am too, but after last year I'm going to be a little more cautious. I just want our guys to play with a massive chip on their shoulder. I think that's when Butch is at his best, and last year was a learning experience for him being the favorite and not really being comfortable in that position. This year I think there is enough talent on the roster where the combination of talent and attitude has the chance to be successful. Last year too many guys were waiting for Dobbs or Barnett to bail us out, coupled with all the injuries. Too many people on here discount our health situation last year and they are wrong. If we can stay healthy and some how maintain some continuity I think we will be a very good team next year.

I like the moves CBJ made with the staff. Made another good hire today with a QC guy

The injury bug eventually has to pass. It seems like we've been hit harder than most he last few seasons. The lack of depth didn't do us any favors either.

We could get something really special going here in the future if Yankee does this again. All out campaign with Freak's approval of course.

I'm all in. Been supporting St. Jude a long time. Makes it even better for a fellow VN guy doing it.
maybe it should be a challenge of sorts with other fan bases.
you're right....it could be really big...especially if you can get employers and/or businesses matching donations.

I'm not even thinking big picture like matching donations. But a sustained campaign on VN alone could produce some serious funds if everyone pitched in.

But I do think the idea of sports forums competing for top donor would be cool. Tigerdroppings/SEC Rant, Cockytalk, Swamp Gas, Landtheives and ShaggyTexas are some big boards. I'm sure there are others out there if I had some time to research it. And I'd bet at least one of those posters can run a half marathon.

Each board puts up their champion to run the marathon. Each board tries to outdo each other in donations. It has some merit. A little competition off the field for a worthy cause...

Did well with them. First set of fitted irons and it's surprising the difference it makes. Got the Mizuno JPX900 Hot Metal. Also got the Ping G driver but still waiting on it to be delivered to the shop.
When I was working and coaching, I didn't have the time to play golf. So when I retired, I started back using clubs that were probably 30 years old. Also they were "fitted" for me when I was a lot younger, stronger, and certainly more athletic. After some frustration and some stern advice from a teaching pro, I started trying out different clubs. Fortunately, I was able to play with a lot of different brands and styles to get an understanding of what was right for me and my swing. Or should I say, lack of swing!!!! It took a lot of work, but I finally found the right set of clubs and it made a ton of difference. I will be joining you hitting at the range tomorrow. Nice to be back playing.

Just a couple thoughts on some of the Vols topics mentioned:

--CBJ doesn't need the practice presence now that the level of effort is up to SEC levels. When he first came, the practice discipline was terrible. Almost as terrible as the roster. He doesn't need to "drive" the team like he did in the first couple years.

--We're hearing more and more from CBJ and the staff that the team will run schemes that fit the team, as opposed to the team fitting the scheme. There is definitely a better level of maturity in both the coaching style and player attitudes. Looks like Rock is having a huge effect on the team.

--Bringing in the additional football experience to augment the staff is such a great idea. I like that there will be so much knowledge and talent participating in film study, practice plan development, and game planning.

--It is way too early to predict the QB competition. Both have great arms. I believe it will be the one who's knowledge of the game plan including setting the coverages will be the one. QD may have a slight advantage at this point because of his extra year and experience. Seems like Canales has their development going well. One of the press folks said that it looked like we had 4 Division 1 QBs based on how they were performing. Who would have ever thought that!!!!

--The impact of the 5 new coaches will be very positive. Already, there are signs of improvement across the board.

--Is it just me or are there a noticeable lack of drops from the WRs, TEs, and RBs? Most of the missed catches were on passes that were overthrown.

--The OL depth is finally where we need it to be. When I look back at the OLs from several years ago, we are light years beyond. Glad to hear the redshirt freshmen are looking like they are ready to compete. Thanks Rock!!!!

Can't wait to see the team at the O&W game. From a team and scheme perspective is won't be much. The fun is watching the individual matchups. I'm definitely looking for lots of improvement.

looking like 3 SEC teams will be in the EE --- although I hope UF loses (up 8 with about 8 minutes left)

Season will be made or broke on the play of OL..

If they can protect either of the QB's we will be just fine. If not it will be a long season
