I was lucky enough to see Jackie Walker play, too. He was an incredible linebacker. I have never seen a defensive football player hit as hard as he did.

“As long as I’ve been in school, I’ve heard the story about the night Jackie Walker hit the guy from Oak Ridge,” Mayes says. “‘It sounded like a cannon going off.’ ‘They had to cut the guy’s helmet off.’ It was without a doubt the most famous play in Fulton history.”

Threads like this allow me to identify people worthy of my ignore feature.

Jackie was long overdue for the hall of fame for sure.

Congratulations to Mr. Walker.

But on a less serious note, why is nobody talking about the fact that he could fly?

I mean look at the pic in the Metro Pulse article. That's amazing.

There is a difference between conforming to PC and being "intolerant"... I find none of this thread to be offensive. I think it is more acurate to depict the man as he was, a pure football player who excelled at his craft. That should probably do it for the Volnation and all of our opinions and prefernces. None of us are enlightened enough to worry over his preferences or his life outside the lines.

I had a brain fart when I saw the title and confused it with Jackie Butler. What a difference a last name makes!

Former Vol linebacker Jackie Walker 1969-1971 will be inducted into the Tennessee sports hall of fame Feb. 11, 2011. He was a ground breaking figure in challenging race and sexual orientation. He was the first knoxville african american to get a football scholorship to UT, the first African American in the sec and UT to recieve all American honors and the first African American captain of the 1971 UT football team. Walker also holds an NCAA record for int's returned for touch downs. Walker died in 2002 in Atlanta at the age of 51. Congratulations Jackie Walker you will always be a Vol.

During Walkers playing days the Vols went 30-5 an sec title in 1969 and 2-1 in bowls

You are factually wrong about Jackie being the first African American to play at UT and in the SEC. That honor belongs to Nashvillian, Lester McClain. Nevertheless Walker was a great linebacker.

BTW, Alcoa's Albert Davis would have been the first AA at UT, a year or two earlier, but failed to make the grades.

I know Lester McClain was the first AA to play at UT but I said first KNOXVILLE AA to get a scholoship to UT. I know my vol history

I suspect he means...regardless of Walker's choice for an alternative sexual preference...which is by no means the norm in a male only, physical sport like football...let alone expected to be accepted as "normal behavior" by anyone who has not succumbed to the these PC times which I, for one...am tired of having such chosen behavior shoved down my throat as being "normal" when I, in fact, don't find it to be....

Or maybe Grizz didn't mean it that way...but, that is how I read it...and I stand by my interpretation of the way I read it.

Oh..and a posthumous congratulations to Walker who, I never saw play...but, apparently was a great Volunteer.
Wow...Choice? Do you think he would choose to be scorned in his era? Hopefully this was just a questionable "choice" of wording. Congrats to Mr. Walker and RIP, sir.

He was before my time, but I've read enough and been told enough about him to know he was a great player. I could care less about what someone does in their private life.

lester mcclain was the first black player for the vols and the first sec player to make a significant impact for his team. he wasn't the first black in the sec though, i think that honor goes to a kentucky player.

I knew Jackie, not well, but as a close friend of my fraternity roommate. The number of bisexual and homosexual Vol athletes surprised me way back when (69-72). All having to live in the closet...except Jackie. :good!:

Jackie's exceptional accomplishments have been buried away because of his homosexuality.

Shame on us. :nono:Shame on UT.:cray: About time to put things right. :good!:
