I may be showing my age, but, since we are on the threads of NFL drafts, former Vols, etc... Why has nobody ever mentioned Knoxville native Bill Bates from the Cowboys?

I remember Bill Bates well. Unfortunately, one of my first college football memories was Bates getting Hershel Walker's foot planted in his chest.

Well now...That's not good

The most pathetic thing about that play was that it got turned into artwork that every rabid UGA fan had in their office because, well, from the early 80s until 2001 there wasn't much about UGA football that anyone wanted to hang on their wall.

I didn't know what he did at UT. I thought he played here and was going to ask, but, now is the day of Google!

he was a return guy at UT too.
I saw him return a TD against Pitt and Dan Marino when I was a kid. Married a beautiful ex-UT cheerleader.

I had forgotten about that. Not only did he get run over by Hershel Walker that day . . . he also muffed a punt that turned into a Safety right before the half. WE had a 15-0 lead on UGA and they beat us 16-15 and ended up winning the National title. :banghead2:

Bates was great for us . . . except for that day in Knoxville.

I remember Bill Bates as being good for UT but not necessarily great. However, I was like 10 years old when he was playing at UT, so what did/do I know? He had a pretty good career in the NFL, didn't he? Since I don't really follow the NFL that much, I remember being somewhat surprised to see that he was doing pretty well there.

He had a looooong NFL career where he just kept making the roster as a special teams player over and over again.

Every year you would hear a new, young player was coming to take BB's spot but it never happened. Amazing that he made it playing ST so long.

I was there. Even at my young age, it was traumatic to watch. That was my first trip to Neyland.

"Oh you Hershel Walker!!!"

It helps some that Walker was just insanely great. Still, a bad memory forever tattooed on my brain cells...

Just imagine if you lived in Georgia and about once a month you heard the replay of Larry Munson saying "My God . . . he's a Freshman?!"
