Let us all hope that Bruce Pearl gets under the skin of all the UK people half as much as Ray Mears did.

Mears was head coach of the Volunteers from 1963 to 1977. He led Tennessee to three Southeastern Conference championships and was twice named SEC Coach of the Year (1967 and 1977).
Mears never coached a losing season. His career record of 399-135 (.747) ranks him among the top 15 all-time college men's basketball coaches with a minimum of 10 seasons.

A true loss in the Tennessee family. Thank God he got to see Tennessee return to glory before he closed his eyes.

A truly sad day.

agreed, i'm sure seeing the orange blazer on the side court against Vandy and KY had to make him feel proud.

I've always had mixed feelings about ol' Ray. I remember him coming to band practices in the summer and giving a speech (many coaches did... Pat, Coach O'Neal, etc...) and I have vivid memories of the passion in his eyes for UT and forever the Phrase that was popular in band: "HE GOT ME THE JOB!!!" I think it was in reference to WJ Julian, but I'm not sure. He also coined the phrase "Big Orange Country" which he tried to sue the university for liscensing money.
Other than that, stand up guy.

God bless Ray Mears, the man who built Tennessee basketball tradition. I would like to see a patch on the jerseys for this year in his memory.

I once saw him coach in high school, before he came to UT. He coached at a school called West Tech in Cleveland, Ohio. He did a very unique thing during the course of the game I saw. His team got off to a sizable lead, so he had them go into a stall for about the last four or five minutes of the FIRST half. The other team wasn't sure how to handle that, so they wore themselves out playing defense, and his team maintained their big lead.

He was UT's first real BB coach and took UT Basketball to the top of the SEC. Good Bye, Mr Mears!!
