Former Player's Opinion on Current Program

The youth question is a big issue for sure.... but it seems we are the only ones trying to use it. Youth did not hinder a freshman running back from Ga from scoring two touchdowns and making our defenders look like grass cutters trying to tackle him....

UT will be better when you have an oline and dline that has been in a college strength and conditioning program for more than a year or two. It all starts with the line and until they are up to full strength this team will struggle.

Wasn't Fair one of the former players who signed the "keep Fulmer" petition (or w/e you wanna call it) in the KNS? Either way, after that, its hard for me to trust the opinion of former players just because they were former players. Just because they played for UT doesn't mean they can remain emotionally unattached. Quite the opposite in fact.

The problem is most of these teams have upper classmen on their lines. They're not in a position to have to play young guys across the board. They may sprinkle a guy in here and there. For the most part their guys have been in a system much longer and are a lot further along in their development.

Is Tennessee undersized on the Dline? Yes they are. The Oline is having problems too. Youth has something to do with it but they could be a little better at this point. The running game and kicking game are the two most disappointing things going on right now. Both should be better and the coaches and the players can share in that.

Our kicking game is bad but return game is a lot better. DY is promising. Also our coverage unit is ranked pretty high nationally.

KO coverage better and DY shows potential, true.

many teams are much better in kicking, such as GA and even montana.

ST is a crucial part of the game and we consistently lose, especially against SEC teams.

We have a rather stupid fanbase.

What is wrong with some of these people? We lost by 8 points to a team with 10 times the talent. 3 weeks ago we lost to UF by 10 that has 10 times the players we do. Throw in the fact our number 1 reciever and biggest down field threat missed all but 4 plays of both games.

I think we are absolutly on the right path, with Junter we beat UGA, no doubt.

When I looked at Boise St recruiting, they had 1 or 2 4 star player in the last 3 years.
UT definitely has the better athletes on paper.

On paper? Damn....I guess the Vols are the much more talented team....and deep as the ocean too.....it's just a shame the game is played on the field and not on paper

If you told me Saturday morning that we would hold UGA to 20 pts I would have started celebrating a victory early. The offense just didn't have it together for whatever reason.

Florida has more freshmen and sophomore starters than we do. Georgia is very close as well. The youth shows up in the 2010 class having to play more players than the 2009 class, but otherwise, our numbers are on par for the rest of the SEC. We're not that much younger compared to our competitors.

Do you know why?

Because Fulmer Left us with ****

Seniors or RS seniors now would be from the 2006 and 2007 recruiting cycles.

His lack of recruiting has put us in this burden.

Especially when you're team, overall, is in the shape we are... What I mean is an Alabama can still win with sub par ST.... We can not....

Agreed and without the complimentary big play we give up every game it would have been 13....

please name the teams that compare to UT's situation and are doing better...

How soon we forget just how bad it was at Bama, they went through 4 coaches, remeber. And then they decided no more fooling around. They would pay big money for a big name. Saban had them undefeated playing in the SEC championship game after one year. And don't tell me Shula left a loaded roster. Saban did it with great freshman.

I know this is only one man's opinion but thought it interesting of Terry Fair...

UT is using "young team" as crutch and that a lot of teams are "young".

Twitter

When you take the field, as a player, coaches should demand excellence, regardless of youth.

However, facts are facts...this is a young team with very little senior leadership at key positions on the field. The Vols are doing what exactly what young teams do...look "lights out" one week, not so great the next.

Youth is inconsistent when it comes to execution. This team will probably shock a great opponent, pull an upset of epic proportions, before the season is out...then look like crap against Kentucky or Vandy.

The last time we, Vol Fans, experienced this type of monster rebuild was back in the late 70's and early 80's. Lose to to a terrible Rutgers team (13-7) one week, then blow out a 10 win Notre Dame crew (40-18) the next.

Friends, you're going to be sea-sick for the next couple seasons. :yuck: This is a rollercoaster ride.

Florida's DL is likely the youngest in college football, while their OL has 2 sophomore starters, and their sixth OL who rotates in is also a sophomore. Talent and performance is the issue more so than youth.

It is not just the talent and experience in the starters that makes your team successful. The talent and experience of your depth is critical to good preparation. You can have a very talented group of starters who aren't well prepared for a game simply because you can't replicate the level of talent on the other side of the ball. For example, we have a talented O Line but we also have a lot of gaps in our D Line. The O Line can only get to a certain level blocking the sled, and we all agree that our biggest recruiting need this year is the D Line. We have 4-5 good D Linemen right now, how can we expect them to really push the 10 O Linemen?

I didn't read Fair's comments, but does it really make me blind to reality to expect our DCoordinator to be able to pressure the QB on 3rd and 10--with MJackson, JSmith, CMaggitt, and DVereen? Or am I blind to expect our DC to adjust and not put his vulnerable and outmatched CBs in man-man coverage after they've been toasted numerous times in the game already?

I completely understand our predicament--and have reasonable expectations--I thought this game would be close and that our guys would fight through and win an extremely hard-fought victory--

I'm extremely pleased with the attitude and toughness of our players--and I do expect 2012 and 2013 to be much better--but I have no hope that Wilcox will ever succeed in the SEC...color me what you must--and I sincerely hope that I'm wrong--but I do remember that Spurrier's DC--and his personal friend--couldn't cut it in the SEC--and him hiring Bob Stoops and the rest is history. IMHO--same thing will HAVE to happen with Wilcox...

GO VOLS! :salute:

Well, you are wrong. Wilcox is doing a very good job with the talent available. Two long passes in an entire game may be better than allowing a team to run the ball down your throat the entire game. Wilcox will be excellent when he has the talent and depth to do what he really wants to do defensively.

"Young team" has very little to do with it, the problem at Tennessee is 3 coaches in 2 years and complete chaos after Lamo left. Very hard to turn a program around in a year or two under these circumstances, and it's going to be much harder if you keep giving your head coach a hard time.

Yeah, Terry Fair, a former vol player and NFL player can't be expected to know as much as you.

some are just tired of excuses.

the lack of any semblance of a run game vs sec competion is disturbing and has not been addressed.

thats a fact, why do we have to repeat al. miscues.

it all starts at the top and works its way down to the field.

pretty much tells you who was calling the shots.

Everything u said is ok! But the defense was good enough to beat florida and georgia. With last year running game (when they were young inexperience) we had a better running game year before we had 2 walk ons better running game. with running game we would be 4-0 going into LSU game and healthy Bray
