Former Player's Opinion on Current Program

The ultimate, impartial arbiter of college football talent -- not recruiting stars, but actual talent -- is the NFL draft. That's the measure of the talent coming through a program. How've the Vols done the last 5-6 years in the NFL draft? How have all our rivals? What does that say about where Dooley had to start from?

On defense, we're less youth-dependent than Florida, and not that different than Georgia. On offense, Georgia's key players -- Crowell, Mitchell and Murray are all freshmen and sophomores. Youth is a factor, it's not the governing one. Talent is the key, and we lack it in the running game and defensively across the board.

Yea, I'd overlook the fact that Murray's actually a RS sophomore. And, how would you rate UGA's sophomore receivers with ours?

I just looked at our offensive line. We have 1 junior, and 4 sophomores in our starting 5 on the OL. It looks even worse if you look at the regular rotation, which consist of freshman and sophomores.

What? Are you suggesting Florida isn't as good without their upperclassmen? You're kidding me? That can't be true. Brissett should have gone in there and thrown for 300 yards; hell, he's talented isn't he? Experience is totally irrelevant.

I don't know why we even play the games anymore.
We should look at the roster, and starters and the team with the most upperclassmen wins by default.

Haven't we figured out by now that it's not how experienced the playmakers are, it's how experienced the offensive line is? What's the two-deep look like for Georgia's OL compared to ours?

Not a trick question -- I don't know. I'm going to guess that it's not all freshman and sophomores like ours. Playmakers can come right in and start. Linemen normally take awhile. Not in Knoxville these days, though.

Actually you might be surprised by how often that is the case.

How anyone can make a decision on if Dooley is going to succeed or fail at this point is quite mind boggling. He walked into a complete mess left by the former regime and the one year stint of a punk. We have holes all over the place and it's a small miracle we only lost by 8 points in my opinion with the way we run the ball and our continuing special teams screw ups.

If I had to point the finger at any one coach right now, it would be Hiestand and Russell. Our running game is atrocious and our special teams continue to be anything but special. Hiestand has youth all over the place, but we should be able to get some type of positive yardage at times and we haven't. Dooley might have to make a decision in the near future if this doesn't improve. We haven't been worth a damn on special teams in so long that I don't know if we ever will be again. It's just a given that we will continue to stink or be average at best. I've pretty much given up hope in this dept. At least we seem to be covering better this year and Young has provided a spark.

Our secondary is average at best and that all falls back on Jackson's dismissal. Once he left, that moved Waggner from CB to safety. Missing that one player has had a domino effect on that unit. No other way to put it. When you start losing difference makers, and you are already thin to begin with, you are going to struggle. Losing Jackson, Lathers, Hunter and Bray would hurt most teams. When they are the few difference makers you have on a team that is filled with youth, it damn near can cripple a team.

It amazes me how people that should know better can ignore what has happened the past 3 years and the obvious impact it's had on the product on the field.

Right now its the damn injuries that are killing us - things were good until Hunter started the domino effect - as a Vol fan I am still sick about it :cray:

Nobody can because there aren't any in college football. It takes what seems like forever to rebuild when the cupboard is bare and there are multiple NCAA investigations hovering over your head scaring away potential recruits.

from a dooley jock sniffer, now its the NCAA investigation that causes bad clock managment, horrendous special teams play, and the worst line play ever at UT. Wow just wow. Water that friggin bamboo.....

Let's see.....3 staff changes in the last 4 years....46 players that have left the program over that time.....no sr or jr contributors to speak of.....yeah I agree the Vols should be playing for the SECCG and the NC this year.....how can some of you guys actually be as dumb as you appear to be? Head trauma? Heavy metal poisoning? Extra chromosome?

FL and GA haven't gone through this.....neither has anyone else you bunch of ignorant ass baboons.

terry fair is smarter than alot of posters on volnation.

Unfortunately Chumpy you are one that is not....based on the posts of yours that I've read, if we were using college courses to determine levels of intellect, you'd be re-enrolled in remedial dumbass 101.....because you failed it the first two times

At this point in time I would never say he’s not going to succeed….I would however and have said all along that:

0 His past performance does nothing to indicate he is a good coach, on the contrary it suggests he’s mediocre at best

0 It can’t be quantified but it should be obvious to all but the most hardcore 'bandwagoners' he’s not an effective leader or recruiter

Given the tumultuous recent past at the university and Dooley’s name recognition I think he has 2 more years before he’s gone… at that time I think it will be safe to say our once proud program will have solidified itself as a perennial middle of pack program in the SEC and no longer have any national prominence….

Our new identity is yet to be established but I can see it being along the lines of fans finding pleasure attempting to pull an occasional upset…against the likes of South Carolina or Mississippi….or maybe we’ll get a wacky coach and derive entertainment from his antics…the first woman head coach would be a nice touch…maybe a family area inside Neyland is in order….you know an area where families can spread out blankets and have a picnic, play catch with the kids while the game is going on….how about a bring your dog to the game……no one knows what the future holds…but we need to be prepared to accept even embrace it….

It is being used as an excuse. People are fine with the losing by saying that we will be better next year...... Then next year comes and it doesn't change. All this silly talk about 2012 being the year UT makes a run is pathetic. There is nothing on this team that even hints at championship quality.

I think it's a fallacy.

You look at the really good players that UT has had over the last 10 years. These guys were good as freshmen and sophomores, they didn't just get good as juniors or seniors. Eric Berry, Janzen Jackson, Jamaal Lewis, Casey Clausen, etc. These guys all played good as underclassmen. True they got a little bit better as seniors, but they played well as underclassmen. Even a few players in my mind didn't really improve that much as seniors, look at Foster and Munoz, etc. They weren't the dominant players they were expected to be as seniors.

What happens a lot is these freshmen and sophomores who aren't playing that well, tend to get beat out when they are upperclassmen by incoming freshmen or sophomores who are better at their position. It's the talent it's not what class they are.

ST has sucked under CPF, CLK, and now under CDD.

strange

Everyone take a deep breath and relax. Our defense gave up two field goals in the first half. In the second half Georgia scored two touchdowns to our one. Our safeties were playing to slow the run and there was no help for Teague. He got burned. Crowell got 59 yards. It wasn't that bad. Georgia's defense stepped up and shut us down. Read Will Shelton's article on RTT.

I am not saying they are in the same situation, but Texas has played 18 freshmen, Florida 15, etc. But was it for one play? I don't really know about them, but we are doing it out of necessity. I would like to see stats on how many seniors they play, start, etc. compared to us. This is not the only problem, though. You also have to look at the fact that our OL and many of the other freshmen or sophomores never had any upperclass starters to mentor them. One of the biggest issues is they haven't had anything other than other frosh and sophomores to practice against. Makes a huge difference.

I live in Austin, and I can tell you that Texas has more talent, more experience, and is NOT doing any better. They just played their first real game of the season and they got run out of the stadium.

I didn't read Fair's comments, but does it really make me blind to reality to expect our DCoordinator to be able to pressure the QB on 3rd and 10--with MJackson, JSmith, CMaggitt, and DVereen? Or am I blind to expect our DC to adjust and not put his vulnerable and outmatched CBs in man-man coverage after they've been toasted numerous times in the game already?

GO VOLS! :saqlute:

Haha. So can you please tell me how you would blitz 2 linebackers and at the same time not leave your your young cb's on island in man coverage? With comment's like that, I'm not sure you really do understand the situation.

I think it has a lot to do with a lack of intelligence.
