Former Players call for Dooley's Departure

This shouldn't be about Ainge period. He took a beating and basiclly had "Namath" legs. But he did play on the field for UT, saw and experienced those times and therefore should have the right to put forth what he sees now compared to back then...and it's not the same.

Round and round we go, LOL!

Only AD Hart knows what will or won't happen and when he stands before the press and says something then we'll all know and not before.

VFL...GBO!!!

For all those bashing Ainge for his play (and thinking it means anything as far as the value of his opinion), I'll give you one guess as to who was the last Vol QB to beat Florida and Alabama.

Dooley is done and good riddance. Anyone who loves Dooley so much that they feel the need to give him another year to trash the Vol program I love so much can follow him to whatever mid-major backwater he ends up coaching their Tight Ends.

How do you know he is? He might, also, say in two years you done good with what you were given, do better still. Being a former cop and military retiree it is hard for me to not roll my eyes at anyone who has admitted heroin usage. I never even smoked a joint and barely drank more than a toast or two ( more like small sips) at a mandatory military social function. Guess I am still of the generation that believes you give most any HC 4 years unless he does something morally stupid like Petrino to get his guys in.

I roll my eyes at someone so...umm...unevolved as you

Agreed. Lets just hope it goes something like this:

I appreciate all that Derek has done for this univeristy. He has instituted the VFL program, cleaned out troubled players, and brought stability back to Tennesssee. I'd like to thank him for his service and offer him the the position of VFL coordinator.

Now let me introduce you to your new Univerity of Tennessee Football coach..... Your Pick (Mine Jon Gruden)

If enough fans and media types call for a firing, IMO Hart will not have much of a choice. Recruiting is going to take a nosedive here pretty quick. Most have probably noted we have not had a commitment in a while. We were supposed to be getting good news about North & Green 3-4 weeks ago. Both guys seem to be looking for other options. Michiga losing yesterdy may help with Green. I think if these recruits would play for a loser, they will play for a winner. Hart just needs to get the ball rolling if he has not already. Kids will start to question the direction of this program if they are not already. We already have/had 1 kid who regrets ever coming here.

Oh, and I also saw where Terry Fair was brutal towards Dooley, too. If anyone wants to question Fair's Vol credentials, they need to sit in their mommy's basement and watch games from the mid-90s to knock some sense into them.

So, if you are a former player, addict, local celeb, and radio host, then you are automatically dismissed as being unable to see and say the truth? Pretty much rules out every former player who's ever sat behind the mic. Complete and utter nonesense. Wake up, fools.

Former Vols call for Dooley's departure

In Derek Dooley's three years as UT Football's head coach, he's never secured a win against a ranked team.

Most everyone agrees he inherited a tough situation, but some former Vol players say he's lost his shot to turn it around.

Former UT quarterback Erik Ainge and former UT wide receiver Jayson Swain both say Dooley should coach the season, but announce his departure soon.

"I think if there's a coach out there, a big name, home run coach that wants to take this job, I think you throw the check book at him," says Ainge. "This town needs it."

Opinions may differ on whether Dooley's had enough time to get UT football back on track. After all, Ainge points out it took South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier five years to build that program.

But he says there's a difference.

"In the mean time they won games they weren't supposed to win.," says Ainge. "[Derek Dooley] hasn't won one of those games."

Swain says for him, the Alabama game sealed the deal.

"Knowing the game was over but kicking the field goal it was kind of like he gave it up," says Swain. "I think a lot of people that were on the fence about Derek Dooley kind of went over the fence."

Swain says if Dooley leaves, it's important to announce it soon.

The sooner you do it, the longer you have time to be able to make a splash in recruiting," says Swain.

Ainge says as a former player he knows there are things more important than winning.

But to fans, and the to the university, that may not be the case.

" A Tennessee Football team that's not winning football games, there's a lot of money that's not being made in this town," says Ainge."

The stands at next week's home game against Troy may be a telling sign of how many fans share their sentiments.

You can hear more from Ainge and Swain on Tennessee Sports Radio.

Tune in to WBIR Sunday at 10 a.m. when Swain joins Steve Philips and the rest of the Sunday morning crew for the Sunday Sports Talk Show.

Sorry, hadn't seen this posted yet.

I am so surprised it is these two that say he should go. I am sure that someone that is in the news business would love to have some thing happen that is news worth so they can have something to report. No news does not sell or people won't tune in to listen to it! I do think evalutaiton of the defense should be done however the offense has been good enough to win a lot of games the 5 foes have won! Need some stops and we are rolling! Fans aren't patient, hope administors are at least patient and level headed. Stay or go it could mean a Tennessee program that is in the cellar for many years to come!

Odd that Dooley reportedly wanted to fire Cheney and he hired Sunseri. There's just no way to rationally defend him anymore. I understand those who just want to wrap themselves in the blanket of fandom and claim undying allegiance as long as Dooley's name is on the door to the head coach's office but he's done all for us that he can do. Time to cut the apron strings and find us a big boy coach.

Ainge and Swain are both in the Sports talk business now and sorry to say that means the more controversy there is the bigger their ratings. Swain has far more cred than Ainge but neither are exactly free of bias, Controversy means more money for both of them even when they say things fans agree with.

Doesn't mean what they're saying isn't true though.

Again, doesn't make their statements about Dooley any less true.

Actually, the implication is that it does.

Motive of the speaker is the key to assessing the validity of any statement.

They're right that UT should win more games. The only point of contention is how to effect that sooner rather than later.

Seeing the 180 in expectations this board took over the last eight weeks has been really entertaining. The fan and media reaction has been at least as compelling as the actual football. Seeing a couple former players weigh in only adds to the surreal scenario.

Chief Chavis even pointed out the supreme fickleness of our fan base. I have to think that will play a factor in the coaching search and its eventual result.

If Chuckie is in the conversation for real, you have to think he included the Legion of the Miserable on the "con" side of the sheet, next to "cult like fan support" in the "pro" column.

It would be so ironic if it actually resulted in Dooley keeping his job.

Dooley does not have a senior class yet. Would have to be players he kicked off or those who have quit. -- How did Ainge get on the radio anyway? Someone should be fired for that.

He has the only show worth listening to in Knoxville. You must be a Hyams listener.
