Former NFL lineman on Richmond: "I don't think they wash his uniform very much because I don't think he ever gets it dirty"

I'll believe Morris and the other OL recruits they sign are the answer to the OL woes when they start knocking the hell out of the Gators in Gainesville next season.

4 head coaches in, it's getting more than a little difficult buying into these narratives put forth on here.

As it stands, the O line coach has shown zero ability to coach up what he has on hand.

Can’t coach up mediocrity

Smith has played worse than Richmond? ********! I challenge you to show me some clips where Smith missed blocks or took a play off..
Nobody’s going to take the time to do that but he’s right, IMO. Smith has missed more blocks this year than Richmond. He belonged at OG but we had no choice but to put him at OT.

Barrett Jones also said on the radio this afternoon (Sports 56, Memphis) that our OL may be the worst that he has ever seen in the SEC and that they are just not an SEC caliber OL.

You know whats funny? You hear former players, broadcasters, sports analysis and others saying the exact same thing about whats wrong with our offense. Its the OL. Why people want to place the blame on the QB when the OL is this horrid is beyond comprehension.

I believe Pruitt knows this and is just trying to get thru this year. The recruits he has coming in, if they stick will solve some of this. But depth is still a ways away.

Former Vol and NFL offensive lineman Tim Irwin on Drew Richmond:

"I don't think they wash his uniform very much because I don't think he ever gets it dirty. I don't think he plays with a lot of effort and I don't think he's that gifted. He looks slow and methodical and I don't see a lot of fire in him. We were so excited when he came here and he hasn't panned out. I hate to call out an individual like that, but I think it's the truth in that case. I don't think he plays with a lot of emotion and a lot of fire. Maybe his ability is not as good as I thought it was when he came here. I thought we had our tackle problem solved when we got him."

Ouch! I wonder how players react to this type of criticism? Being a OL is not for the timid, and if Richmond was pushed in a sport because of his size, but he doesn't have the "want to" no amount of coaching can change a young man's mind if he doesn't like what he is doing. I have witnessed friends push their children into situations like this regardless of the child's abilities or attitude. It's sad to see your name on national media saying you lack heart, not everyone loves football............I know, that is an ugly statement in the South.

Richmond doesn’t care one bit, he going to be a long haul truck driver and make lots of overtime
No, the color commentator on the SEC broadcast even pulled up a replay of Richmond totally whiffing on a block. Like he wasn't even trying. Called him out for "turning the guy loose."

I agree with much of this, HOWEVER, this lack of "want to" is supposed to have been weeded out before hitting the collegiate ranks, especially the SEC level. Not every big kid wants to play football, seen it about a million times. I had a youngster in one of our youth leagues whose father was a big guy, 6'3" type, looked like Hillbiily Jim bib overalls and all, former all city football player in one of the top ten cities in Tennessee. His son was a big youngster and had zero interest in sports, none of them, not baseball, basketball, or football. He was pushed in to it by his parents, youth coaches, and even some private school interest just due to his size but the young man had no interest in sports whatsoever. To this day, he's not a fan and doesn't care at all about sports. You can't make kids want to love a game if it's not in them. If Richmond has stuck it out this far there's something about playing football he likes or he wouldn't take the abuse, but he may just not be willing to pay the price to get anywhere close to his potential.

Let's be honest. the skill set difference between OG and OT is minimal at the HS/College level.

Agree, but sometimes there is that "guilt" that runs through their heads about the $$$ the family invested in his future and they try and make themselves "perform", I think Drew is this giant of a man, who doesn't want to pound his head and body against DL that are beating him on the line.........not sure what the answer is for him, but I can guarantee there are some peer and family pressures hidden in his story.

Yall need to get over your obsession with CBJ.

He wasn't the only one to apparently misjudge this player.

Drew Richmond - Football Recruiting - Player Profiles - ESPN

I don't think its about hating on CBJ (although I am often wrong) as much as the point the folks who really know these kids and potential is the coaching staff. They SHOULD be watching a ton of film on them, see them live a few times and talk to the coaches about +/-; getting a feel for their intangibles. My thought is they knew the kid had an effort problem but likely thought they could fix it and his technique issues. What I am most concerned about is they knew his shortcomings but needed the * rating to artificially boost the recruiting class. We are seeing the result of that mentality as we likely could have grabbed a more capable player instead of the loafer 51.

It really is an effort problem. The end beat him off the ball on the 3rd & 2 (was it 4th? can't recall) near the goal line. Beat him so badly he could barely get hands on him as the end blows up our back for a loss. All he had to do was cut the end, basic stuff, and he's out of the play. Pure. Effin. Laziness.

The game commentator, ex-Bama lineman Barrett, pointed out Richmond a couple of times. One I remember was on a run to the left side that Richmond literally didn't touch his guy from the RT spot and the guy made the tackle in the backfield or right at the line of scrimmage on the other end of the line. All DR had to do was touch him but he stood up and made no effort. Most pitiful

If you look at the film, he made an effort, it was just a really slow one. I think Barret said something like he didn't get out of his stance fast enough. I think it was shortly after that Pruitt dressed him down on the sideline and he sat the rest of the game.

Let's assume Richmond is NOT a 5* or 4* or even 3*, but how does he get his butt beat time after time from Charlotte. My guess is Charlotte has few 3* players!!!
Lack of effort, or he's hurt and they aren't saying anything. Only two possibilities.

If he's routinely getting beat and getting his QB killed simply because he isn't trying, he needs to be benched or perhaps even kicked off the team.

That comment is really not fair to Richmond or our other linemen. Of course they get their uniforms dirty. If they aren't whiffing on a block, they get knocked on their a$$

We will go ahead that to the regimen as well. Should be effective for developing toughness. Maybe me and you should team up and coach this o-line. Somebody put me in touch with coach Pruitt!

The play of our offensive line was revealed in the play where one of them was trying to block for JG and the guy rushing knocked him into JG and he fell on top of JG for the sack. Even when we get a body on someone we can't control them they pancake some of our OL players. The whiffs are numerous but even the blocks we achieve are pathetic.

Anyone watch the replay they showed on Jones playing center? He didn't do much other than chip the guy on that play. That shows you don't have to have pancake blocks, or blow out blocks. You just have to make contact and slow them down. Bad thing is this has been Richmond all year long. I am curious how many penalties he has had this year? He had what 3 that game alone? Thats an embarrassment at his age to have that many stupid mistakes.
