I'm not a Butch apologist. All those that called me an UGA Homer when I criticised the hire will attest to that. I just thought it was interesting to hear one of his players say why he thought Butch was no longer the Vols coach.

Rewind back to 2015. The Vols beat UGa. They beat SC. They beat Ky and Vandy by 25-30 points. They beat the #12 team in the country by 39 in a bowl game. They seemed to be on the verge of taking the next step. Some argued they should have taken that step this season.

A 2OT loss to Oklahoma, a 3 pt loss to UF, 4 pt loss to Arky and a 5 pt loss to Bama all haunted Jones. But rather than take responsibility for being too conservative, he panicked.

He blamed the defense. He blamed conditioning. In a bold move the fired his DC and his S&C coach. His S&C coach had been with him since 2007.

He said this was the beginning of the end for Jones. Jancek with his guys was better than Shoop with Jancek's guys. It just didn't work. S&C took a major step backwards. Teams had told the players on the 2015 squad that they were the most physical team they played that year. He said had Jones not made these two moves he'd still be at UT.

I doubt it. You can only have so much coach speak and blaming others without taking any sort of responsibility before recruits start turning the other way.

I'm pretty sure it had more to do with him being an incompetent game manager more than someone who points fingers. He only pointed fingers when he knew his team had quit on him and he was just there to milk the contract for all it's worth. Also it's really hard for a team to stay motivated when your head coach's actions seemed more in-line with saving his own ass than helping the team. He was by all accounts very narrow minded and unlikeable as a head coach. Being buddy-buddy with the AD is a main reason why he stayed a year longer than he should've. His actions after his firing are all you need to look at if you want to see who the real Butch Jones is. How can you respect a man who claimed to be committed to your university for 5 years yet still goes out and gets hired by our biggest rival as an offensive INTERN? It takes a pretty special kind of snake to do that. Honestly would be surprised if any D1 university ever takes a chance on him again as a HC (unless absolutely desperate like we were with Derek Dooley).

Not so sure he would still be here. I think the defense wouldn't have collapsed nearly as bad. The injury issues really cropped up after Lawson was fired and we all saw how well Jancek's staff meshed with Shoop (not well at all). So maybe the defense would have stayed steady and been ok. They were never going to be great under Jancek though. There's no doubt that the offense was going to tank without Dobbs. He compensated for all the issues with Butch's system. Add in the hires of unproven guys like Scott, Wells, and Beard...that offense was doomed no matter how good the S&C program had been.

You can have a lot of flaws as a college football coach, if on game day, you coach well, and win.

Butch didn't.

His micromanaging of staff, poor hiring and promoting, tone-deaf press conferences, over-reliance on slogans and such were only exacerbated by his game day coaching meltdowns that became commonplace.

He became a charicture of himself as a coach.

Jancek’s Fire was unwarranted at the timing it occurred!!

Shoop was the ONLY staff member that Butch couldn’t completely MICRO MANAGE!!

Maybe so, but JPs guys are SUPER physical now, with less than a year...I like where we are now....

Currie is part of it and what Im saying is every post you make, is the exact same thing -- fishing for likes

“Ignore” option if you need too.

Regardless, I’ll still post my opinion with or without the “like” button.

do what you want, but get some help for your OCD with Butch Jones -- he is gone from UT

He is gone but his players are still here.

Until Pruitt cleans up the roster, we’ll continue to struggle.
