If you were born as this guy you'd have no choice but to perpetrate the same actions. Nothing but luck kept you from having the right mix of genetics and environmental conditions necessary for psychopathy.

For practical purposes we must hold people responsible when their conduct threatens the safety of others. My thoughts address why one might feel sympathy for criminals while still acknowledging the necessity of their incarcertion.

I should have added that I'm not accusing this guy of being a psychopath. Skin color is a minor component of genetics. There is likely more genetic variation between two randomly selected Africans than between a random European and African.

Way to leave out the rest of my quote.

Unless it was truly an accident I dont really see why one should feel sympathy for those who commit crimes. At least those that directly impact another human, like this case.

Genetics. And he wasnt talking about his athletic abilities.

Or if he is I would love to see him link athletic ability to a predisposition of crime based on genetics.

Me, I was rejecting the idea of genetics being a piece of this equation.

Skin color is only a small part of genetics. Genetics are a huge factor in mental health, and that's where my mind went first, but I'm also familiar with the predeterminism concepts that he's alluding to.

I cant buy the predetermism concept. If that was the case there would never be failures or success stories. It's just another way to avoid personal responsibility.

It wasnt Baker that did these actions, it was his genetics.

Even if he was predisposed to do something, it's still his choice in the end. And therefore the only thing that matter is his choice.

And yes I know this isnt your argument.

I don't buy it either, but those are narratives, not necessarily realities.

I don't think predeterminism is real, but even if it is, it's no way to live. It can be useful in judging others, tho. There is truth to the idea.

There arent realities of success or failures?

What truth would that be? It seems to be saying that the racists are right, someone is different enough to summed up and hated or treated differently based on genetics. Everything I have ever been taught says otherwise.

I mean that if predeterminism is real, then attributing success or failure to someone's choices is just a narrative and not a reality.

Nobody is saying racists are right and I have no idea how you got there. I think you might be confused about the concept. It's not just genetics, it's also environment. So you might be genetically predisposed to anger and then come up in a racist environment and that would explain why you are racist. Or maybe your environment is people from another race mistreat you and that leads to your being racist.
