Jim Grobe. Why does no one mention him as a candidate?? All he has done is turn Wake Forest (Wake #%&*%# ing Forest!!!) into a contender and a participant in more BCS bowls in the last 7 years than UT.

He has done this at a school with high academic standards.

He has done this with quality student athletes (Google Wake Forest football arrested and see what comes up. I'll save you the time....nothing. Except an article about a Wake player kicked off the team for posting something on his facebook page about "blowing up" the campus. Not actually harming anyone, getting arrested, fighting, using/selling drugs, but posting an inappropriate comment on facebook. And he was kicked off the team!!!! Bet he wishes that Wake had UT's discipline policy for football players. But I digress....)

He's done this with few if any blue chip recruits (which implies that he and the staff are COACHING them when they get there).

He's done this at Wake #%&*#ing Forest!!!!!

He's done this at a school that spent $410,000 on recruiting men's sports in 2006-2007, UT's football budget is $2 million!!!

He's done this by playing tough, smart football.

He's made Wake Forest (Wake #%&*$ing Forest!!!!) BELIEVE that they can win. Does anyone think a Fulmer coached team has ever BELIEVED that they would win a big game? Quite the opposite - they get tighter than a banjo string every time a big game rolls around (especially against the hated Gators). They WANT to win, but don't expect to win. Grobe can make Wake believe, but Phil can't do that with the talent and tradition at UT???

I know people are faithful to Phil. He brought 2 SEC championships and 1 national Championship in 16 years, and for those I'm grateful. But what else? An embarrassment to our state and University by the conduct of our players? Big game disappointments? Subpoenas at SEC media days? I think we should demand more than that.

If Jim Grobe can do what he's done at Wake, imagine what he could do in Big Orange country!!! Somebody tell me I'm crazy, or right on the money, or just plain stupid. But I think Jim is our man.

I'm not too sure he'd be a good recruiter. That quality is absolutely essential for a Tennessee coach.

His age concerns me. We would be getting someone in the twilight of his career.

especially recruit in an area that we are weak in at this point, we have a good foot in North Carolina being we are so close in location, what we need is too get in more with california, texas, florida or the GA/AL/MS/LA area since the state of tennessee doesnt produce much top talent of its own to harvest. yes he can coach but so can alot of other guys in considerstion that also would bring contacts with these hotbed recruiting areas

a third of his roster is from FL! He comes down here and rakes in Florida talent every year. QB from FL, linemen from FL, WR from FL. I don't see too many on the UT roster from this state....other than Quintin Hancock and Morley. He's already more successful recruiting FL than Phil, and he's at Wake Forest!

7 years is an interesting point in history to choose. Unfortunately that one Orange bowl trip in 06 was preceded by 3 years of no bowls, and the seattle bowl.

The 06 season, where they went to the Orange, the ACC wasn't exactly a world beater. He has won more than 5 conference games exactly once.

Jim Grobe hasn't exactly lit up the football world. Winning games at Wake is commendable, but he's not proven a ton. 50-40 isn't putting him at the top of my list. 83-73-1 all time isn't, either.

More, bringing up "SEC Media Day subpoenas" is laughable, because he was give it for helping keep the SEC clean.

Surely he didn't go off to Durham with the intensions of becoming a BCS powerhouse. I thought his departure was merely a ruse so administration could appease fans by luring him back to Kville. It just so happens... the man can coach and he's won some games while he was "on vacation". Am I wrong to think we wouldn't love to have Coach C back in orange?

:pardon:

Excellent, excellent post and choice in coach. Couldn't agree more...

I really like Grobe as a coach... did a lot with nothing. If wake forest had UT's budget there's no telling what he could do. I've always liked what he was doing over at wake. He runs a real offense not a bunch of gimmicks. I also noticed his players play with a lot of confidence. Can't say that for UT. This season against Ole miss after losing the lead with a minute left, the entire team and especially the QB looked as if they had it in the bag, no panic. Ending up beating Ole miss and ole miss has high quality talent. Anyways when CPF gets canned here's what coaches we should look to hire in this order IMO:

1. Jon Gruden - household NFL name
2. Butch Davis - UNC head coach
3. Coach Cutcliffe - Some might disagree, however if he can win with duke he can win here as top dog and can recruit any qb he wants practically
4. Jim Grobe
5. Lane Kiffin - great recruiter, nfl experience, west coast connections
6 Brian Kelly - Cincinnati coach, similar to grobe

I would take Cutt back before Grobe or Peterson. Wouldn't hurt my feelings. Remember when he was here he was under Fulmer. It would be interesting to see what he could do when he's calling all the shots.

That's a great list. Although i think Gruden & Davis are not possible and not big on Grobe. Cutt, Kelly, or Kiffen wouldn't hurt my feelings. I'd throw Muschamp in there too.

Too old, coaches in a weak acc where winning is much easier, not a good recruiter.
