For those who think nobody would want to coach here

You just described half of VN posters.....

I know man. I didn't realize that some, actually 3 for sure, want us to lose out, thinking that Butch will be fired.

And I don't need to go into all the reasons why that is........well, I can't even think of a word.

Is what it is I gues.

Like it or not Butch has moved the program in the right direction. Yes, most TN fans wanted a big name coach, me included. I just don't want to throw over a guy that is working hard and making progress for someone who could be worse. Don't forget there are things besides th W/L record. As long as he can recruit as he has we will be able to attract a good coach if the wins don't come. I agree we don't want to enable a death spiral by providing a large buyout or too many years extension. At the same time if he gets the wins we will have to pay to keep him.

The reason we've had to settle when hiring coaches isn't due to poor in-state talent, a lack of resources, or because people think we have irrational fans. The reason is because we, for reasons I can't understand, have been waiting until the last possible minute to make changes. While other programs make changes when they aren't satisfied with the results, we wait until we have a complete dumpster fire on our hands. Qualified coaches look at Tennessee and see a historically top 10-15 program where competent coaches can have real success, but are obviously going to be put off by the fact that the roster is in such bad shape.

And that's why we settle. The coaches we should be targeting pass because they know their resume is good enough to wait for a different offer. An offer that, while likely comparable in terms of money and opportunity, provides them a far greater chance to win early. The coaches we end up hiring are the coaches like Derek Dooley and Butch Jones. In other words, the coaches who know nothing better is ever coming for them.

With all that being said, I realize that Butch isn't going anywhere. The people in power allowed Dave Hart to give Butch an insane, unearned buyout, and then made no plans to replace Hart until after this season, effectively leaving us with no option but to sit back and watch as a perfectly predictable scenario unfolds. So those of you who don't want to see Butch go (whether you actually still believe in Butch, are delusional enough to think we just need a new offensive coordinator, or are simply scared of change), there's no need to worry. Hopefully it makes you feel better when the losses start piling up.

WE can still maybe get Dooley back. Maybe.

I will laugh my butt off if Hart grants ya'lls wish and fires Butch after this season then replaces him with someone even worse. You honestly think you can trust Hart with another coaching hire? lol Be careful what you wish for.

Hart has been neutered. He can neither fire nor hire anyone. If he wanted to hire a new janitor he couldn't.

It isn't year 1... Unless this is Dooley math.

Penn State was raping little boys and they seem to be turning around quicker than us.

I saw an article that said PSU was on the way up, too. Then laughed after I checked their record. They've won games over notables like Kent St, Purdue, Temple; and lost to Pitt with our old backup QB and MI; and then they got lucky and OH St rolled over like we did at SC. See when it's all said and done, PSU has been ridiculously rated for playing two ranked teams; TN has played two of the top four in the CFP rankings and two more in the rankings - it's a little like playing with fire - sometimes you get burned when you play a tougher schedule.

So they've won one game they shouldn't have, and that whopping one game trend makes them a contender. That's why there's so much irrationality around football fans - including "journalists". People think one abnormal game is a meaningful statistic (or harbinger), and they are constantly relearning that on any given Saturday ... Oh, yeah, there's that transitive thing, and the fact that sometimes in the middle of a losing season a SC or an LSU has some sort of epiphany, makes some changes, and then it's just not the same team everybody had been having their way with.

Amazing how he loses against USC and he's got moving trucks in his driveway. However, those are the same people building a statue of him after FL.

Not me. Never believed in him. And because of his silly contract and buyout he has no motivation to improve because he's getting paid regardless. I think we're screwed.
